The 49-year-old gospel legend was abandoned by his parents as child. He was then adopted at 4-years-old by his then 64-year-old maternal grandmother, Gertrude – who coincidentally sold aluminum cans to earn money to pay for piano lessons for Kirk at that time. Well, as an adult, Kirk was grateful to finally have met his Father during his Dad’s last days of life. Here is the emotional post he shared on Instagram on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2018:

Kirk Franklin: “So…..Two days ago, I received an anonymous call that my biological father, who I never knew, has 3-6 months to live. I’ve lived my entire life hating this man. He and my biological mother gave me up for adoption, and it left me never feeling good enough….to this very day.

I took my hate for him and used it as fuel to be the best father I could be for my own. But what I did wrong, is I never took that fuel, and turn it into forgiveness….and that is wrong. Wrong for him, me, and the God I proclaim to represent.

How can I preach what I don’t practice. So I flew to Houston yesterday to do that. It’s painful, it’s a process, but how disappointed I would be in myself for this man to leave this earth without being forgiven. He deserves to receive what God gives me everyday. Pray for him, and for me. God this is hard…I weep as I write.”

The Painful Memories Kirk Franklin Revealed About His Past With His Mom & Dad

Kirk Franklin wrote an open letter to his absentee mother in 2015 and here’s part of what he confessed:

KF: “If you know me, then you know me. You know I carry a lot of issues on my shoulders about how I was raised, and how I missed having a mother. I’ve even found myself being jealous a little at how much love I’ve seen my wife Tammy give my sons. The doting care and attention she gives them has deepened their self-confidence to do anything placed in front of them. Even the discipline (whenever needed) is a sign to them that consequences are a real part of life and that they need to choose wisely. I often sit in the corners of their room and watch all of this with a yearning for a chance to have had that in my life when I was young.

No matter how many accomplishments may have passed through my life, one “I’m proud” from the woman who gave me life would have trumped every Grammy I’ve ever gotten.

Don’t get me wrong, Gertrude was a saint! She’s the lady who adopted me and steered my life into faith and music. But I limped through her love…”

In a separate 2015 blog post, Franklin disclosed one of his many most painful experiences as a child:

“One of my most painful memories as a kid was of a time that my biological mother told me and my half sister that she was coming to pick us up and take us to the state fair of Texas.”

Their mom never came that day, even though they stood outside for hours with anticipation of her arrival. Here’s how Franklin views his mother now:

“The memories of my real mother were of a distant aunt or female relative who would stop by five to six times a year. My sister and I both felt this abandonment, me being adopted and her living several places as a little girl.”

Kirk Franklin has managed to not allow his past to fully defeat him. Unfortunately, his newly incarcerated sister has had a much tougher time overcoming the traumatizing effects forced upon her through her parents and upbringing.

What many people may not know is that gospel legend, Kirk Franklin, has an older son named, Kerrion Franklin. The father and son don’t have the best relationship and Kerrion is the alleged black sheep of the fam.’ Recently, Kerrion took to social media to make some outrageous claims about his Pops, that has tainted the performer’s christian image.

Kerrion Franklin Alleges His Father Is Trying To Kill Him:

Kerrion (born in 1988) is from Kirk Franklin’s son from his first marriage, when Kirk became a father at age 17. Not only did Kirk have a child before his current 22-year long marriage, but his wife, Tammy, has a daughter- Carrington (born in 1989; whom Kirk legally adopted). Kirk and Tammy also have two children together- daughter, Kennedy (born in 1997), and son, Caziah (born in 2000).

According to Black Christian News, the reason that the father and son’s relationship is strained, is because Kerrion’s personality doesn’t support Kirk Franklin’s christian beliefs. On Instagram, he Kerrion is known as Dragon Sacrifice , where he refers to himself as a producer, director, and editor. Last month, Kerrion made some shocking allegations against his own father. According to Kerrion, he believes that Kirk s trying to have him killed. Kerrion posted the statement on Instagram and then deleted it.

It’s unclear why Kerrion and Kirk had a turbulent relationship, but it’s hard to believe that Kirk would try to kill his own son. The gospel singer once opened up and shared how being a young father robbed him of his childhood. In an interview with Chron, Kirk Franklin spoke about his difficult childhood.

Details Of Kirk Franklin’s Difficult Childhood:

While Kirk Franklin attended church as a child, he also was surrounded by drugs, due to many of his family members having struggled with addiction. His life lacked stability and direction, which according to led Kirk, led to him becoming a father at a young age. Struggling to find himself in life, the gospel star was headed down the wrong path, before he met his mentor and pastor, Tony Evans, of the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas. Kirk has acknowledged  that he fathered a baby with a girl at 15.  He also admitted to paying for the girl’s abortion. It has been no secret that Franklin had troubling family issues he experienced as a youth because he’s made it well known in the media:

“There was incest in our family, as a kid. There was some abuse. I was a little boy. My little sister— there was some rape. There were some ugly images that we got introduced to as kids at about the age of 8. So from about the age of 8 to about 29, I struggled with that [pornography]. Not only pornography, but I was very promiscuous,” Kirk Franklin told  Sway in the Morning on Sirius/XM Channel 45 in an interview.

At a time in his life, when he was looking for love and acceptance, Kirk Franklin met  pastor Tony Evans, when he was 28 years old. Forever grateful for Evans’ guidance, Franklin now mentors teens to help children who lack positive role models:

“It’s very difficult. I’ve worked with kids in a youth ministry in California,” said Kirk Franklin to The Chron. “Every time I see these kids I wonder if I’m building them or reprogramming. I see them on Sunday and no matter how engaging or culturally relevant I am, they leave me and go back to the world on Monday where having sex is not a big thing, using drugs is not a big thing. They’ve got to work through that stuff every day. It’s a difficult task, but not impossible.”

Despite Franklin’s rough upbringing and the struggles he endured, he is one of the leading gospel artists in the world, selling millions of albums, and touring all over the globe.  He’s loved by his fans and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. However, it is heartbreaking that he hasn’t seem to repair the relationship with his eldest son, Kerrion, who appears to be trying to desperately gain some type of reaction and/or attention from Kirk, in his own way.

Gospel legend, Kirk Franklin, and his family are going through it right now. He recently announced that his sister has just been sentenced to 30 years in prison. Her current sentence comes shortly after she’d already served 10 years in the pen’ for a separate drug related crime.

In an emotional online post, Franklin revealed the latest heartbreaking news to his fans:

“My sister was just sentenced to 30 years in prison…I now feel the weight of wondering if I could have done more,” Franklin said in his post on Sunday, with the caption “rough week,” added.

Although there isn’t much info on Franklin’s sister, he did give a few clues into what she was going through in 2015, when he revealed that she struggled with drug addiction and more:

“For over ten years, my younger sister was incarcerated in a facility here in Texas. She was in love with a young man who was [a] drug dealer,” Franklin stated in his 2015 statement. “He introduced her to not only selling drugs, but using as well. When he was arrested for drug trafficking, she was arrested along with him. After she served her time, she was brought before the review board who determined she was ready to be released and brought back into society. The documents were signed and she was set free… but only on paper.”

He continued, with his revelation that his sister had relapsed at that time, just months after her prior prison release:

“After a few months back into the free world, it became obvious to me rather quickly that my sister was still in prison. It’s what they call being institutionalized. She quickly started using again, becoming very reckless with her body, which turned into her using it as a means to pay for her habit,” he said.

A few weeks before his latest announcement about his sister’s 30 year bid, Kirk Franklin dropped some hints that someone in his family is currently dealing with mental health issues. On June 8, 2018, when celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain, committed suicide, days after fashion designer Kate Spade did, Franklin took to social media to share his story about his own family’s struggles.

“We’ve had two individuals, high profile people that committed suicide this week, in one week. And even though I didn’t know them that can be very traumatic and I wanted to be very honest with you to maybe help someone. I personally know what it is to have a family member with either issues with depression or mental illness and we’re still going through it as a family,” he said, adding a plea to his fans to “Get help.”

In addition to sharing his story, Franklin also advised Christians and religious leaders not to minimize mental illness as something that can simply be prayed out of an individual:

“In the church sometimes you think you can just shout everything away or speak in tongues everything away or sometimes drink and smoke everything away but you can’t. This is real. It’s a disease. And you’ve got to treat it like a disease. God is faithful but faith without works is dead, so you’ve gotta put in the work. You’re too important. You’re too valuable. We need you,” stated Franklin.

At first Kirk Franklin’s Tuesday night seemed to be going off without a hinge. He’d just landed in Tokyo, Japan and posted a view of the city…

Little did he know though, his youngest daughter, Kennedy, was about to get brutally harassed by a female and a male, regarding her views on the topic and apparently, her looks as well. Both of the harassers say they are christians and one of them states that he’s a pastor…

They also have both have either deleted their harassing tweets after many people jumped all over them in defense of the Franklins, so we don’t know exactly what they said, but we do know that Kirk and his daughter had to get gully with ’em. Check out the exchange below…

Leading up to Carrington’s big moment, Kirk shared this photo where he reminisced about his daughter and how much he didn’t want her to grow up, but accepts that fact now:

She’s getting married today…..and I’ve spent an hour and a half rewriting this. Crying, smiling, and preparing to let go, ….of my little girl. I will walk her down the isle, then I will officiate the wedding. Why? Because I’m selfish, for my little girl. And she asked her daddy to! How could I say no?! I pray I don’t make a fool of myself and cry more than I speak. God, it’s so hard to release her. If I could I would keep her a little girl, FOREVER. Selfish, I know. But at this moment, I want to be. I want to go go- kart riding, jet skiing, middle school basketball games, movies over and over again….just me and her. This is hard as Hell. She has no idea, cause she’s not a daddy. I am. A proud one. I hope I was a good one. I’m sorry for that one spanking you got that killed me more than it did you! I’m proud and love your future husband. Jealous, but proud. He comes first now. I’ll have to get use to that, cause I’m selfish, for you. Only pictures get stuck in time, not people. Of course we couldn’t expect nothing less from THE Kirk Franklin- the man who helped usher in a whole new hip hop vibe to today’s gospel music. He’s kind of like the ‘BBD of gospel’ Bell, Biv, Devoe brought something new to R&B back in the day when they introduced their “hip hop, smoothed out with a R&B tip, with a pop feel, appeal to it” style to the game and Kirk’s thing could be summed up as ‘gospel, smoothed out on a R&B tip, with a pop feel, appeal, to it.’

True, the hip hop/R&B fused gospel music is pretty standard now, but back in ’93 when Kirk was the hype man on his own gospel records, that was a new thing and a big deal. So yeah, I’ll give Kirk that ‘BBD of Gospel title.’

Anyways, the most beautiful part of it all is that he’s come a long way and seeing the photos of his daughter all grown up now- when it seemed like just yesterday she was 10- is a reminder of that fact. Kirk’s been grinding hard with his musical ministry since before Carrington was born and he’s still at it.

We also gotta give it up for Kirk’s wife, Tammy, for helping to raise a wonderful daughter, as well as there three other children, and for standing by her man through thick and thin.

Carrington is actually Kirk’s adopted daughter and her mother’s biological child. After Kirk and Tammy were married in 1996, Kirk officially adopted Carrington and raised her as his own. Talk about a stand up brotha!

It says people are not redeemable, forgivable or candidates for grace. That my friend is religious. I will not turn my back on my brother. I will love him, prayerfully grow with him. However long he’ll have me, and however long the race takes. To a lot of my Christian family, I’m sorry he’s not good enough, Christian enough, or running at your pace…and as I read some of your comments, neither am I. That won’t stop me from running. Pray we win.
