Approximately 24 years ago (1998) Lauryn Hill rapped the lyrics, “It’s silly when girls sell their souls because it’s in.” And right about now, fans can only imagine if those same thoughts are on her mind regarding her 23-year-old daughter (Bob Marley’s granddaughter), Selah Marley’s, latest business move. You see, Kanye West has caused a major tizzy all across social media, by rockin’ a “White Lives Matter” shirt for his new Yeezy clothing collection on Monday, in Paris. Thing is, he also took Lauryn’s model-daughter along for that ride…to the surprise of many.

So, why are fans surprised and now speaking out on this? For several reasons. For starters, Kanye is doing what Kanye does — sparking controversy. But what really has many Lauryn Hill fans taken aback, is that Selah Marley is doing what her moms, nor late activist grandfather, Bob Marley, would likely not have done — she’s teamed up with Trump-supporting Kanye, and flaunted his “White Lives Matter” shirt at ‘Ye’s latest fashion show.

In case y’all haven’t heard…the WLM shirt is ‘Ye’s latest creation that he was photographed wearing, alongside not only Selah, but also Black controversial conservative, Candace Owens, while at the Paris fashion show.

The back of the shirt reads, “White Lives Matter,” in bold white letters; while the front showcases an image of Pope John Paul II with the message, “We shall follow your example.”

Needless to say, fans have been goin’ off about this ever since– calling Kanye every name under the sun; while also expressing confusion over how the daughter and granddaughter of such pro-Black legends — Lauryn Hill and Bob Marley — has gotten to this point with her seemingly opposing outlook.

Fans were quick to point out Selah Marley in some of the online images that have now surfaced of Kanye’s fashion show:

For the record, fans are not against White lives. In fact, within American culture it’s long been understood that White lives matter – as they should, along with all lives. However, the question has always been whether or not Black lives actually matter in America…given the hundreds of years of continued oppression and systemic racism African Americans face daily on every level. That is why so many fans are perplexed by Kanye’s latest spectacle.

Anywho…not sure how Lauryn Hill, nor Selah Marley’s pops, Rohan Marley (Bob Marley’s son), really feel about Kanye seemingly utilizing their daughter as a walking billboard to get his message across. Maybe…only time will tell.

Rohan is the father of five of Lauryn Hill’s six children, and Nico is her former ‘step-son’ in a sense. He’s a 26-year-old Tulane University graduate, who played the linebacker position in the NFL. He built an incredible rep’ throughout his college career as well.

Although Nico made major headlines after signing his NFL contract last year, he’s been headlining for other reasons as well. We checked out several social media platforms and found that the dude has the ladies going crazy over him! Everywhere we looked, there were hundreds of online comments from ladies talking about the “sexy Marley grandson,” whom they’d love to get with. They even offered Nico propositions of the sexual persuasion if you know what we mean.

We’re sure Lauryn Hill’s former ‘step-son’ is loving the attention, but the good thing is that Nico is hella focused on his career.

Nico is currently a free agent, after having been waived from the Washington Football Team. However, it seems that he understands that’s just the nature of the sport. Apparently, his pops understands that as well, especially based on the interview he gave soon after Nico was first signed his NFL contract. In 2017, Rohan told TMZ that his son’s Washington signing and his famous family name are not a guaranteed ticket, but simply an opportunity for him to prove himself. He also stated that Nico is very “coachable” and just an all-around good guy.

“The Redskins, they reached out to me right after the draft within 10 minutes of the last pick, right around that time,” Marley told Redskins.com. “Then there was the Saints and Cardinals, they also extended the same rookie camp invite. I chose Washington, I had a good conversation and something just told me to come here so I chose Washington. The Saints, I was in New Orleans for four years. I just really felt Washington.”

We love The Fugees, here at I Love Old School Music. Members, Wyclef Jean, Pras, and Lauryn Hill were giving us real hip-hop…and at times, real R&B as well (thanks to Lauryn’s beautiful voice). But as we already know, things eventually went sour among them.

Before their demise though, it was nothing but love. And to show just how much of a bond they had, in recent years, Pras shared that Lauryn Hill turned down a TON of money to stand by her group members. She also made them lose even more, according to Pras, but we’ll get to that in a minute. During a radio interview with Ed Lover, Pras broke down what she did for them and said that’s why he’ll always love and respect her. Check out what happened below.

Lauryn Turned Down Millions For Her Group Members

Pras tells Ed Lover: “No matter what Lauryn Hill ever do, or say, I will always have so much respect for her because I’mma tell you something she did in the very beginning of our career. So, back when we [were] kinda like just getting on, Penny Hardaway (former NBA player), when he was hot…he goes to the manager and says ‘I want Lauryn Hill, to do a commercial with her. … I don’t want the guys [Pras and Wyclef], I want Lauryn.’ She [Lauryn] was like, ‘Well, I’m not doing anything without my crew…you gotta take ALL of us. You can’t just pluck me away.’ “

But then Pras said the ad agency came back with an offer of $3 MILLION for Lauryn, to entice her to do the commercial with Penny Hardaway, without Pras and Wyclef and she still gave them a ‘Hell no’…

‘Yo, here’s $3 million…you wanna break it off with the guys [Pras and Wyclef], we don’t give a fu*k; but we don’t want these mothafu**as on the set. Tell them Haitian ni&&as to go back to Haiti, but we want you,’ Pras said the ad agency told Lauryn. Then he said, “She turned it down. THAT’s honorable. So that means what happened at that time we couldn’t come back together (after the Fugees broke up) that was pain,” explained Pras.

BUT THAT”S NOT ALL…

Why Lauryn Hill Recently Turned Down $90 MILLION!

Although The Fugees have recently reunited as of September 2021 for the first time in 15 years, according to Pras, Hill passed up a prior opportunity to do so…and it was a very lucrative one.

Pras: “Ms. Hill…she doesn’t care about none of that sh*t, all she cares about is truth and respect and if you don’t have that, that woman would rather go into a place of misery…[…] Her thing is, ‘When we first started we were equal. It didn’t matter if the world was bowing down to me and saying -Y’all two niggas need to go back to Haiti.- NO, I don’t give a f*&k, I’m rockin’ with you ni&&as….that don’t mean nothing to me.'”

“Five months ago we got an offer to make 90 million dollars to go on the road…they were like y’all don’t even got to do a record, let’s go on the road. She [Lauryn] was like ‘No,’ and I respect that.

Then Pras explained why she said no and it has a lot to do with the tension that still cuts extremely deep between Lauryn and Wyclef:

Pras: “The worst thing is when you’re in a room with someone and y’all don’t gel with each other and you gotta work with each other. That’s prison… With her, it doesn’t matter if she’s BROKE, if she’s not in that space, she’s not fuc&in with it! And I gotta respect that to a certain extent, even though I’m like “Sh*t, I could use that extra 22 million” (referring to his portion of the 90 mill’ they would have taken home).

Lauryn Hill recently stated her reasons for deciding to tour with the group again in 2021, for their 25th anniversary:

Via LA Times – “The Fugees have a complex but impactful history,” Hill said in a statement, unaware that it was the album’s 25th anniversary until someone brought it to her attention. “I decided to honor this significant project, its anniversary, and the fans who appreciated the music by creating a peaceful platform where we could unite, perform the music we loved, and set an example of reconciliation for the world.”

Wow, when it comes to Ms. Hill…talk about a stand up woman! For $90 million, some folks would be willing to backstab their own Mother…just sayin.’

For the past few decades most of us, true Lauryn Hill fans, have been waiting for her to drop a new album and show these so called new-school singers/rappers out here how it’s really done. It’s been 23 years since she dropped her diamond (10 million) selling album, Mis-education of Lauryn Hill and we think it’s about time for a new one.

Well, we’ll probably just be waiting, according to Lauryn’s former Fugees group member, Pras. In an interview with Vlad TV, Pras broke down exactly why that wish may only be a dream and not reality. Check out what he said below…

“She just felt uninspired. I’m going to say this to you. Some people money is a driving force for them. For her, money isn’t a driving force for her. If she had a billion dollars, if she had one dollar she would’ve done it the exact same way….When she says she wasn’t…she’s been uninspired she means that. This is a woman who she has to feel inspired to create, and if she doesn’t feel inspired she’s not going to create. Because that’s what she gets her source of energy from. When we did ‘The Score’ we were inspired from what was happening. You talking Snoop, Pac, Jay, Biggie, Total; you had so much great sh*t happening that we were like we want to get in that game. Let’s bring something to the game. Let’s bring The refugee Fugees style to the table,” said Pras.

So in other words, because Lauryn Hill is bored with, and uninspired by the current state of R&B and hip hop (understandably so), “that thing, that thing” we want from her…she won’t be giving anytime soon, or probably ever. That was an “all so simple” summarization of a very complex artist and we’re glad Pras broke that down for us. ILOSM fam’ can y’all believe it’s been 24 years since the cult classic film, Love Jones, hit theaters? Seems like just yesterday that we were waiting for the release of the film that introduced us to “Darius Lovehall” and “Nina Moseley’s” relationship.

Years later, on the 20th anniversary of the film in 2017, cast members- Nia Long, Bill Bellamy, Larenz Tate, Isaiah Washington, and Lisa Nicole Carson- along with the film’s writer-director, Ted Witcher (pictured above, 2nd from left), dished some previously unknown behind-the-scenes facts about the Love Jones.

Director Tells Why Jada Pinkett-Smith Declined “Love Jones” Movie Role:

Witcher revealed that Nia Long was nowhere on his radar when he was trying to cast the film. He instead wanted Jada Pinkett-Smith:

Witcher- “Believe it or not, I had Jada Pinkett [Smith] in mind. I had seen her on “A Different World” and thought she had a very different sensibility from other black actresses of her generation. I tried to get her and she passed.”

Jada Pinkett-Smith as ‘Nina Moseley’?!! Nah. Don’t me wrong, I love me some Jada and one of my favorite Jada roles is “Stony” in Set It Off, but after seeing Nia as “Nina,” there is just no other “Nina” in my eyes.

They had made “Menace II Society” and, from a marketing [and] numbers standpoint, said, “Look, if you can get Larenz, we’ll make the movie.” His participation became integral to getting a green light at New Line.

He was obviously quite dynamic in “Menace II Society,” but I thought [his character, O-Dog] was him [in real life] — that’s how compelling he was. I was a little bit wary going in to meet him, even though I knew that I had to have him because I wanted to get the movie made.

Tate Wasn’t Thrilled About Witcher Directing Him:

Witcher said that when he first met Larenz to discuss the movie, Larenz was “stand-offish” with him, because although he liked the script, he wasn’t happy about working with a first time director (referring to Witcher).

Tate: We had our meeting of the minds and there were some things that I saw differently than he, as far as the character. But ultimately what I gathered from him was that we would have a work relationship that was open and that we would be able to do it in a collective way. It wasn’t my way or the highway, and neither was that for him.

Isaiah Washington Had To Check The Film’s Producer:

On the very first day of filming, Isaiah Washington (who played Darius’ homeboy, ‘Savon Garrison’) had to give one of the Love Jones producers a very Isaiah Washington response regarding his hair. In case y’all didn’t know, Isaiah never bites his tongue for nobody, even it it costs him his job:

Washington: I remember one of the producers walked into my trailer with clippers in his hand demanding that I shave my head because he wasn’t aware of any teacher that would look like me, with a goatee and locs and wearing a field jacket. This was my first day on set. My reason for doing this character looking this way is because we had a huge problem with African American hair in the workplace and, unfortunately, 20 years later we still have people losing their jobs because of locs.

Now, I don’t think the producer was being racist or biased. I think he was trying to protect the money that was given to us by a system that didn’t care what we thought or how we felt about empowering ourselves. I don’t hold a grudge to that producer, but I do recall saying, “I’m not making that change, so you can send me back to L.A. if you want to, but right now I need to be on the set to shoot this scene in five minutes.” There was really no debate or battle because money was being lost and a decision had to be made on his part and obviously it was the right one to be made.

Why Lauryn Hill Didn’t Make The Movie, According To Witcher:

The director said he met with Lauryn about being in the film, but her schedule conflicted with the shoot, so she instead created that dope song, “Sweetest Thing,” to the soundtrack and we’re not mad at her at all for that one. That song still hits hard to this day!

Like his beloved Jamaican father, Rohan Marley is a devoted Rastafarian. In his many online posts, he makes that very clear and in his b-day post to Lauryn Hill, instead of wishing her a ‘happy birthday,’ he sent her the “BLESSED EARTH STRONG” salute. ‘Blessed (or happy) earth strong’ is the common Jamaican patois phrase used among Rastas, to represent the number of years one has been going strong on this earth.

Their Kids From Other Relationships

While we’re on the topic of Lauryn’s offspring, little is known about Lauryn’s seldomly-seen 9-year-old son, Micah Hill, but you can check out a throwback photo of him below…

“Mr. Marley and I have a long and complex history about which MANY inaccuracies have been reported since the beginning,” Hill wrote on her website. “To speculate without the facts can only cause people to form WRONG conclusions.”

Prior to Lauryn releasing her statement, many fans bashed Rohan for ‘not supporting’ Lauryn throughout her pregnancy with Micah, due to their assumptions that he was Micah’s dad. However, out of his respect for Lauryn, Rohan refrained from letting the public know the child was not his. He left that up to Lauryn to clear up, before speaking on the topic in 2011:

“People would rather listen to gossip than hear from the actual individuals,” Rohan Marley tweeted. “Some people just don’t want the truth.”

Rohan Expressed Regret After Split From Lauryn

Following their split, Rohan did an interview expressing how much he still loved Lauryn and the regrets he has:

“I feel sad that I loved her so much and I faltered in expressing it to her somehow. It was my fault that she did not understand how I felt, and it was sad that we did not work out in that relationship sense. I was heartbroken for a long time.”

It’s sad that Lauryn’s and Rohan’s relationship couldn’t last, but they seem to be a happily blended co-parenting family today. That’s a beautiful thing.
