Most of us Old Schoolers remember actor/film producer/playwright, Leon Isaac Kennedy. How could we forget him, right? He was one of the most controversial, charismatic celebs of the 80’s era. His pretty boy boxer role as ‘Martel ‘Too Sweet’ Gordone” in Penitentiary 1, 2, and 3 made him a household name. While his “Leon ‘The Lover’ Johnson” role in Body and Soul made the fellas wanna be like him and the ladies wanna be with him.

Needless to say, the only apple of his eye back then was his then wife, Jayne Kennedy. However, after their infamous sex tape leaked (that’s right Kim Kardashian…bow down to those who paved the way for you), all hell broke lose…and so did their marriage.

Fast forward to today, and at 73 years young, the brotha is out here still making major moves with his many careers. Not only did Leon shock the hell outta everybody by transitioning from his on-screen ‘loverboy’ persona, to a real life evangelist, he is now a very successful entrepreneur, who’s latest ventures are garnering attention.

As his press release states, one of Kennedy’s most recent entrepreneurial successes was creating a Brand Company for his longtime best friend- the iconic Smokey Robinson. Matter of fact, ‘the successful Smokey Robinson Foods was placed in over 3,500 stores. It was the first minority food company to be taken nationally by the billion-dollar food chains, Albertsons and Safeway. He not only came up with the idea & star, but raised the million plus dollars and most importantly, found the distributors for marketing the product.’

Leon has also helped brand and market Smokey’s and his wife, Frances Robinson’s, latest skin care line, Skinphonic.

Smokey Robinson had a hidden addiction that didn’t surface until the age of 41. When he fell, he fell hard. Typically we hear of addictions like this starting at a younger age, when peer pressures are more prevalent, but Smokey explained how his hidden addiction started so late…

Smokey Explains His Prior Years-Long Addiction

“I think it happened to me so late because of the fact that I was …” He exhales. “I was always, and I still am, open to somebody in my camp saying, “No, that’s not right, or what do you think you’re doing?’ I have those kind of people around me. Berry Gordy being the main one of them. I appreciate that as a person and I’m very happy that that’s’ there.

But when you divorce yourself from these types of people in your life, then you have a tendency to be able to run amok, when you surround yourself with yes people. And that’s what most people who go amok do – they surround themselves with yes people. Anything you do is fine ’cause you’re you and you’re popular. And that’s dangerous.

He continued:

“I thought that it couldn’t happen to me. That’s the cunning of drugs. I could never become addicted! ‘I love sports, and I run, and I take care of myself. I can overcome this.’ Because when I was younger I used to smoke a whole lot of weed. But weed was always manageable for me. I could have some killer weed and put it away for a year and not touch it! It never had the handle on me. I had the handle on it.

“But when I started dibbling and dabbling on the cocaine, that was a whole other animal. And I never thought I could become an addict. But I did.” He ignored his friends.

Although Smokey was heavily addicted to cocaine, he had a thing against heavy alcohol drinking because when growing up, he said he watched his Dad and his other family members, some of whom were prostitutes and junkies, all become addicted to alcohol and have horrific results in life:

“If I have some sushi, I’ll have Saki. But I never drank. First of all, I never liked the taste of it. And I grew up in my neighborhood, seeing everyone, everything. Alcoholics, junkies, prostitutes, what have you. And many of them were in my family, OK?

And the alcoholics were the most pitiful of them all. They’d be standing there talking to the wall. Cussing the wall out – there was nobody there! Peeing on themselves. They were pitiful.

Then alcohol had an adverse effect on me because [of] my dad … [He] was “Clark Kent” Sunday to Friday – just mild-mannered, sweetie-pie! Friday, he’d get paid, him and his friends – who were buddy-buddy all week long, they were brothers, they loved each other – they’d be drunk, fighting each other. It was just an adverse kind of drug for me, alcohol.

Friends Leon Isaac Kennedy & Berry Gordy To The Rescue

Smokey said actor, Leon Isaac Kennedy— (best known for his films Penitentiary and Body and Soul; and for being married to Jayne Kennedy)– did something for him that he’ll always be grateful for:

“I have two best friends, Leon Isaac Kennedy and Berry Gordy. God sent Leon to come get me and say, ‘Hey man, what are you doing to yourself?’ So Leon came and got me and took me to a prayer service.

The night I went I hadn’t done any drugs beforehand because I knew I was going to a prayer service. However, I was still a junkie. [He rubs his hands on his knees anxiously as though he’s still amazed at what transpired that night.]

During the service, the pastor prayed for him:

“And she told me that God had told her I was coming. And she told me all the things that were happening to me, physically and emotionally and mentally – which I shared with no on one earth! No one knew. She told me every one of ’em that night. She said God had showed her what was going on.

And I walked in that church an addict, and I came out free. May of 1986. Never looked back.”

Smokey began speaking at gang meetings and juvenile detention centers, giving them this message:

“When you turn it over to God, you have turned it over…and you don’t have to worry about it anymore after that.”

Today Smokey has turned over a new leaf and continues to live a healthy lifestyle. He hasn’t eaten red meat since 1972 and he does yoga regularly.

Major props to Smokey for kicking his drug habit cold turkey like that. He’s a great example of if we want to do something bad enough, it’s possible to acquire the will, the drive, and the mindset to conquer any uphill hurdle placed before us, regardless of how late in life we may start that journey. The skill to know how to conquer it, will come through our persistent determination to make it happen.

I can overcome this.’ Because when I was younger I used to smoke a whole lot of weed. But weed was always manageable for me. I could have some killer weed and put it away for a year and not touch it! It never had the handle on me. I had the handle on it.

“But when I started dibbling and dabbling on the cocaine, that was a whole other animal. And I never thought I could become an addict. But I did.” He ignored his friends.

Although Smokey was heavily addicted to cocaine, he had a thing against heavy alcohol drinking because when growing up, he said he watched his Dad and his other family members, some of whom were prostitutes and junkies, all become addicted to alcohol and have horrific results in life:

Remember when Jayne Kennedy and Leon Isaac Kennedy were victims of that infamous leaked sex vid’ back in the day? Well Leon is pulling out all stops on his mission to get at Ebony Magazine for allegedly spreading inaccuracies (in their 2013 “Scandal” Issue) about one of the biggest Old School sex scandals that not even “Olivia Pope” would have been able to fix. Now as we all know, Leon is a very devoted Christian minister now, but even the most devout missionaries can get a lil’ heated if you push them too far. See what Leon had to say about this…

This is an open letter that Leon wrote regarding the Ebony “Scandal Issue” (Via EurWeb):

They accused me of viciously releasing a sex tape during our divorce, insinuating that I purposely tried to ruin Jayne Kennedy’s career and life. Nothing could be further from the truth. They published these scandalized lies to sell magazines, with no regard of how it would forever damage me and others.

The fact is the tape was stolen from my home and was released and exploited almost a decade after our divorce. Jayne and her husband Bill know the truth and I have sworn affidavits from others stating that they know that this tape was not put out by me. In these post-divorce years, I’ve maintained a friendship with Jayne, Bill and their family.

What was particularly hurtful is that this was done by such a venerable, historical magazine. When you read something in Ebony, it’s “Bible”, regarded as truth by the public. Johnson Publishing built its foundation and legacy by lifting up and championing the achievements of the Black community and in particular, Black men. However, the present Ebony staff published sensationalized falsities, contrary to my wonderful working relationship and friendship with CEO-Founder John Johnson – now deceased – and Bob Johnson, one of Johnson’s main reporters.

Because I had such a great relationship and high regard for Mr. Johnson and faith that Johnson Publications would print the story with truth and integrity – I gave Johnson Publications the exclusive first story on our divorce. At our home, Jayne and I sat with the Johnson reporters and stated that our divorce would be amicable, which it was; and our behavior toward one another has continued to be so.

The story stated, “Jayne and Leon will always be good friends.” Jayne stated, “I’m only doing this interview because Leon asked me and because of my relationship with Johnson Publications.” I was quoted as saying, “No matter what happens, I’ll always love Jayne and I’ll always care about her.”

By contrast, for the 2013 article, neither I, nor Jayne Kennedy Overton were contacted by the current writers, editors or Johnson Publications for our comments or opportunity for denial or rebuttal before that article went to print. It’s obvious that they did not want the truth, just sensationalism!

Johnson’s entire attitude has been totally disrespectful. Anyone that knows me will attest that I’ve always tried to conduct myself in a decent and respectful manner. The past, almost 20 years of my life, have been devoted primarily to ministry, wherein we have tried to help and be of service to others.

This suit is not for money, it’s for history; once something appears in Jet or Ebony it’s taken as fact 10 years from now, 100 years from now.

For our families and our careers, the theft and distribution of this tape – was embarrassing and hurtful enough; to me, it was a painful lesson in humility. But incredulously, for me to now be labeled by Johnson Publications, as the vicious villain that perpetrated such hurt and embarrassment, to not just Jayne, but to myself, so many family members, friends and fans, is damaging on so many levels, that it’s beyond my ability to truly express it.

This exploited falsity and tape are not our legacy. Independently, and as a couple, we were pioneers during a time when there was a scarcity of opportunities for minorities, for those of color and for women. – We achieved many “firsts” and helped to break down barriers and open up many doors – that happily others are benefitting from today.

To me, Jayne will always be the epitome of beauty – grace and class. I cherish the time we had as a couple and the friendship I have had with her, her husband Bill and her family in these 30 post-divorce years.

Leon also states in the complaint that Ebony’s “lie” has result in canceled ministry dates and a 40 percent drop in invitations for him to minister at churches and conferences that cost him at least $35,000 in lost revenue. We definitely understand Leon’s anger if what he’s accusing Ebony mag of is true. Unfortunately, Leon’s lawsuit is probably also re-hashing a difficult time for Jayne Kennedy, who is just an innocent bystander in this situation. In this case it’s a no-win situation, unless Leon wins that $1 MILLION he’s seeking. We wish them both closure once and for all though.
