MC Lyte may be “Lyte as a rock” in physical stature…but when it comes to the part she says she played in her divorce from ex, husband, John Wyche, her role wasn’t so light after all…according to her.

MC Lyte’s Confession

The 52-year-rap legend recently participated in a panel discussion at the “MusiCares Humans of Hip Hop” event in June 2024. During the convo’ Lyte was asked to recall a time in her life where she felt she had to “tap in” in order to be more present in a particular situation. That’s when Lyte made the confessions about her prior marriage/divorce:

MC Lyte- “A time where I needed to tap in… was at the brink of a divorce. It was, ‘What was my part in this?’ Just claiming responsibility and realizing that I wasn’t really present as I thought I was.”

MC Lyte continued:

“At that point, I have to do self-inventory. I’ve got to check what’s holding me back. What are the things that I need to take a look at… Being able to empathize and listen to what’s actually happening with people was one of the main factors that I needed to tap into and become aware of how listening is loving…

Not just my marriage with him didn’t work; any marriage wouldn’t have worked because I needed to work on me.”

In a prior interview with Essence, the “Cha Cha Cha” MC admitted that she was “distraught” soon after she and John decided to divorce:

“I think in the very beginning I was very distraught. I feel like there are phases whenever a relationship is ending whether you’re married or not. It’s that first phase of, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got to make this work for us’. Then it’s like, ‘Oh my God I’ve got to make this work for everybody else involved. The family, if there are children, people who flew all the way to wherever to see you married.’” – MC Lyte

Lyte and John Wyche –a Marine Corp vet and entrepreneur– reportedly met on the dating site, Match.com, married in 2017, and she filed for divorce in 2020, although it took a few years for their divorce to be finalized.

MC Lyte Denounces Claims That Her Divorce Was A “Battle”

In January 2023, Lyte took to Instagram to set the record straight about her divorce, her ex, and her assets:

“My divorce was not a battle. My ex-husband, John Wyche, has never attempted to take any assets from me at any time before, during or after our marriage. Anything that is written or said that states or implies otherwise is untrue and unfair. I do not agree with or support anything that aims to secure clicks and views by crafting slanted messaging at the expense of the reputation of innocent parties.” – MC Lyte

Her Divorce/Marriage Advice To Others

She then shared a few “lessons” about divorce with her followers:

“Since this matter appears to be of concern to so many, I will use this moment to share a few lessons:
1. Divorce does not equal failure. We did not fail; it simply did not work. I pray for his well-being as I do my own and I wish him nothing but God’s choicest blessings.

2. If you have anything to protect going into a marriage, get a prenuptial agreement so there’s no confusion if it comes to an end. As a matter of fact, make sure you protect all of your assets with proper insurance, financial and estate planning. Our people are far behind the wealth gap; get a financial education and do what is in your power to protect what God has blessed you with.

3. Focus on love and truth. Be careful what you say or imply about others. No one is perfect and we all have something that we need grace to cover. With all of the mental health crises we are facing as a human race, my prayer is that we will see more commonalities of heart among each other and less judgment.” – MC Lyte

She’s seen found a new man, Aaron Johnson, who’s reportedly a tech industry professional.

On a side-note…one person MC Lyte might not wanna get marital advice from in the near future is her reported best friend (whom she refers to as her “sister”), Jada Pinkett-Smith. I joke, I joke…I kid, I kid 😏. Jada and Will Smith’s marriage may be hangin’ on by a thread (as they have now both admitted in so many words), but hey, whatever makes them happy is their biz.’ Anywho…

MC Lyte’s Prior Post That Caused A Ruckus Online

The other day, MC Lyte posted a meme on social media that read, ‘Sexual harassment or flirting- probably determined by whether she likes him.’ Along with the meme, her photo caption read:

“Some of y’all flirt on Monday to get what you want and then he/she flirts back on Friday and you mad?! #toomuch #interofficeblues

Many thought that was an excellent point to raise, in reference to some of the stories we’ve been hearing, while others felt that MC Lyte was being too hard on the accusers.

Stories, such as one model’s claim against Russell Simmons, has raised suspicions among many online. As we previously reported, model, Keri Claussen Khalighi, recently made claims that Russell Simmons sexually assaulted her in the 1990’s. She alleged that he ‘briefly’ penetrated her against her will, after she’d willingly performed oral sex on him. Khalighi stated that although she performed oral sex on Russell, she did not want to have vaginal sex with him and that that is where he crossed the line. Russell, on the other hand, has adamantly denied not only claims, but the other recent accuser’s claims as well. He’s also voluntarily taken a lie detector test to prove his innocence and passed, according to his attorney.

It wasn’t until after these claims came out against Simmons, that MC Lyte decided to speak out about the sex scandal topic. So it seems as if she’s speaking about allegations, such as that one against Simmons and any others that are similar. Although Lyte didn’t specify which allegations she’s referring to that need to be reassessed as ‘flirting,’ some people wasted no time leaving comments under her now deleted post in opposition of her stance.

A big congratulations is in order for Lana “MC Lyte” Moorer and her new husband, whom she met online. The 46 year old MC- who still gets the parties jumpin’ as soon as her lyrics, “You can cha-cha-cha ’til it’s Mardi Gras” come on- jumped the broom with businessman and Marine Corp Veteran, John Wyche, this past weekend in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

As we previously reported, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Toni Braxton- two of Lyte’s close friends- attended her bridal shower a few days ago and now, her wedding was just as star studded. The talented Kelly Price serenaded the newlyweds, while So So Def founder, Jermaine Dupri DJ’d the event and kept the crowd hype at the reception.

In photos shared by Essence, Lyte and John were cheesin’ it up from ear to ear, as she stood in her wedding gown and John in his fly tux,’ outside at their Jamaican wedding site.

Lyte and John spoke to Essence after their wedding as well:

“It was so beautiful and a fairytale,” says Lyte. “I got my king.” […] “It’s incredible so many people came out to support our union. We are starting out with a strong foundation,” Wyche says. “A few months into getting to know Lana I knew I wanted this woman as my wife.” And his wife realized it as well. “One day when we’re talking and I looked into his eyes. It was so much honesty and truth in his eyes,” Lyte says. “My biggest thing with dating was to be vulnerable. And with him, I could totally let go and be myself.”

I’ve gotta be honest with y’all and admit that I’m still getting adjusted to Lyte being married. Hell, I’m still trying to let it sink in that she was actually engaged or in a relationship at all for that matter. Don’t get me wrong, Lyte is a incredibly attractive and intelligent woman. It’s just that after decades of never seeing her in a public relationship with anyone, then all of a sudden seeing her ‘lost in love’ like New Edition, takes a little getting used to for a longtime Lyte fan, like myself.

Nonetheless, after years of searching for her “Roughneck,” I’m very happy for MC Lyte and the fact that she’s found the perfect man for her in John Wyche.

MC Lyte’s Bridal Shower

As if the typically private MC Lyte hadn’t already surprised fans enough when it was revealed, in May (2017), that she was officially engaged to her fiancee,’ John, she’s hit us with yet another rare inside look at her life. In a new Instagram post, she shared her moment with her close friends and fam’ at her bridal shower. The photo was captioned, “Sisterhood,” and it included teh woman she calls her ‘sister,’ Dr. Lynn Richardson; actress, Jada Pinkett-Smith; R&B singer, Toni Braxton; gospel singer, Erica Campbell; and rapper Lil’ Mama. I know…the Lil’ Mama connection through me off too, because she and Lyte wouldn’t typically seem to be homegirls -given their age difference and probably interests- but they obviously have much in common, because Lyte even refers to Lil’ Mama as her ‘lil sis.’ Anywho, check out MC Lyte’s bridal shower post below…

MC Lyte & Her ‘Sister’s’ Hilarious Collaborations

Another thing we learned is that although we’re accustomed to seeing Lyte in the public eye these days, we didn’t know that she had a sister whom she’s very close to. Her sis,’ Lynn is a minister and financial expert, and unbeknownst to many, MC Lyte is a very dedicated Christian herself. They’ve written a book together, titled, Your Man, Your Money…

And the reason why fans love seeing Lyte spend time with her ‘sister’ (whom we’re not sure is her biological sis or not) on social media, is because of the cool dynamic they have within their relationship- Lynn is the more hype sister, while Lyte is more laid back.

Their personalities compliment each other and that’s probably why they decided to collaborate for their own Youtube channel called ‘Lynn and Lyte Chronicles,’ where they  discuss various oftentimes funny random topics that Lyte’s fans love to comment on.

The Kardashian Curse?

Some fans have expressed their assumptions that Kanye has fallen victim to the ‘Kardashian curse.’ You know, the one that seem to have caused so many Kardashian exes to flip out, or at least have some type of downward career spiral after breakups with one of the Kardashian sisters. Cats like Kim’s exes: NBA player, Kris Humphries…or NFL baller, Reggie Bush; or Kourtney’s ex, Scott Dissick; and let’s not forget about Lamar Odom’s unfortunate, tragic overdose (and remarkable recovery) after his separation from Khloe. We also can’t overlook Kanye’s alleged trip to the psyche ward a while back, during his current marriage to Kim K. either.

Now, if only I could figure out exactly what the Kardashian’s are famous for, then I’d feel like I finally solved a mystery to Alfred Hitchcock episode or something. Okay I just went way back and I understand that some youngins’ probably don’t know anything about Hitchcock. Point is…the Kardashian success story still remains an unsolved mystery to me…just saying.
