The Biggest Names In The Game On One Stage

Pharrell Williams made it up to his fans in a big way only a day after his cancelled show. He was forced to cancel the first day of his inaugural Something in the Water music festival in his hometown Virginia Beach. The rapper surprised fans Saturday night with guest appearances by his biggest collaborators. Including Jay-Z, Diddy, Busta Rhymes, Usher, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Charlie Wilson and Tyler, the Creator.

“Pharrell and Friends,” the nearly 2 hour set found Williams dipping into all aspects of his 27-year career. He kicked started the show with N.O.R.E’s “Nothin,” Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” and Future’s “Move That Dope”. Next he introduced Snoop Dogg for “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” Snoop stayed onstage for the crowd-friendly “Who Am I? (What’s My Name?)”. And of course they had to perform Wilson for the trio’s 2002 hit “Beautiful.”

Worst Kept Secret

When Williams began “Frontin,” his debut solo single, fans already knew what was about to happen. Jay-Z may have been the festival’s worst-kept secret. Not too long before, rumors and spottings of him surfaced.

The rapper’s appearance recieved one of the biggest applauses of the night. He stayed on for “Public Service Announcement,” “Excuse Me Miss” and “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me).”

Something in the Water is almost an expression of a love letter to the N.E.R.D rapper’s home city and state. It is an organized festival and community event. Even the city council came out to show love. The rapper showed love to his city and presented his protégé Fam-Lay to perform his highly underrated 2003 song “Rock n Roll” for the local crowd. The mood was slightly dampened when Timbaland performed nearly an entire song with a broken mic. An unintentional air of absurdism engulfed the show, as the Virginia rapper mute-rapped to the crowd. Jumping around the stage and gesticulating his arms despite anyone being able to hear him.

In the 90’s, before Missy Elliot and the rest of Devante’s artists went solo, Stevie was working with Devante on production. But Stevie says their killer producer-combo came to a screeching halt one day in a Rochester, NY studio. In a 2017 interview with Drink Champs, Stevie detailed what went down that day and why he ended up having a brutal fist fight with about three dudes. One of them was K-ci (of Jodeci) and the others were Devante’s cousin and his bodyguard, but he’s not sure if Devante actually took a swing or not because he said it mayhem and punches were coming from every direction (You can watch Stevie J.’s interview at the bottom of this article).

According to Stevie J.- or as his baby momma, Joseline, likes to call him- ‘Steebie’- Devante Swing used to be cool with Suge Knight when Death Row was poppin’ and apparently he tried to mimic Suge Knight’s known style of ‘managing’ his artists…at least that’s what Stevie described.

Stevie said that one day they were all in the N.Y. based studio- himself, Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Ginuwine, Jodeci, and others- when Devante Swing walked in with his cousin, bodyguards, and two pitfalls on a leash, like some straight ‘Nino Brown’ type of stuff, LOL. At that point, Stevie said what happened next shocked the hell outta him…

According to Stevie,  Devante walked up to each of his artists and started smacking them hard, one by one. Stevie said he watched Devante smack Missy Elliott really hard in the face, then Ginuwine, Timbaland, and so on! Then he said Devante’s cousin went behind him and smacked them again, while they stood there and did nothing.

What in the ‘New Jack City’ hell was happening here?!! Anyways, Stevie had more to say…here is where the mayhem broke out…

Stevie J. also said that Devante knew not to try that with him, but apparently Devante’s cousin didn’t get that memo. So according to Stevie, the cousin walked up to him like he wanted to deliver a smack down and Stevie was like ‘You better not put your hands on me potna’…

Stevie and Devante’s cousin started arguing and that’s when K-Ci jumped in and Stevie started trading blows with K-Ci, Devante’s cousin, and Devante’s bodyguard all at the same damn time! The fight got so vicious that Stevie said somebody hit him over the head with a bottle and that he still has the scar over his eye to prove it. There’s more…

As soon as the fight was over, Stevie told Ginuwine, Missy, Timbaland and the whoever else was there, that they were stupid if they stayed with Devante’s label and continued to let Devante treat them like that. Stevie’s words must have affected them, because he said that soon after he told them that, they all left Devante’s label and started their own thing.

Well I’ll be damned! It sure would be interesting to hear Devante’s side, or at least his fellow Jodeci members’ version of the story. That was some foul stuff right there!

In her heartfelt tribute, Janet read a prepared statement that explained what Missy has meant to music and the culture. She has managed to succeed in a male-dominated industry in spite of the naysayers and Janet wanted to honor that.

“Some rhyme, some rap; some act, some choreograph; some write hit songs; some create whole new sounds,” Janet said to the packed house. “Some women are able to make her mark in some of these fields; but there’s only one woman who has made her mark in all of these fields. Not only have you made your mark, but she’s done so with boldness and courage.”

There were many times when Missy faced sexism and racism in the entertainment industry. Some incidents were so disappointing that she doubted her ability to succeed. Missy continues to face judgment by those who subscribe to the European standard of beauty. But she told the crowd that Black women have to value themselves and keep striving. Missy would not ever want to be anyone other than who she is.

Timbaland’s Tribute To The Love Of His Life

Although his Aaliyah b-day tribute was short, it was filled with much emotion- emotion that Timbaland boldly revealed to the world years after her passing. Many of y’all may recall when we previously reported that Timbaland admitted he was madly in love with Aaliyah and fell into a severe depression after she’d passed away. In fact, he admitted in a recent interview, that his depression was so severe, that he has only recently began to truly emerge out of it. Here’s what he said in a prior interview:

“When I first met Aaliyah… I was in love with her. I said, ‘She (is) just a baby, I’m old’. I said to myself, ‘I’m just gonna be her brother’. Oh man, I was fightin,’ I was fightin’ a lot – a big war. But I loved Aaliyah.”

Then in a 2017 interview, Timbaland -who oftentimes refers to Aaliyah as “baby”- said that “when she passed, I passed”:

Janet Jackson closed out her ‘State of the World Tour’ on Sunday night (12-17-17), with her last show in Atlanta, Ga. It was a helluva experience for Janet, that was full of “firsts” for the 51 year old living legend. It was her first time back on stage since separating from her soon-to-be-ex husband, Wissam Al Mana. It was her first time on stage as a mother (depending on who you ask, because conspiracy theorists still believe Janet may have a grown child out there somewhere). Missy’s Reveal About Her & Janet

Of course, Missy tore that stage ALL the way up at Janet’s concert, just as she always does! But here’s the kicker that most of us never knew: Janet and Missy are not just phenomenal entertainers, they are actually VERY close friends.

Apparently, they’ve been close for many years, but have kept that part of their lives away from the public eye. Their secrecy is very understandable and so is their friendship, because they have much in common. They are naturally very private celebrities and are both very protective of those who are closest to them. Janet is that way with everyone in her iconic Jackson family- even when she was going through some differences with her niece, Paris Jackson, a few years ago.

Missy’s private life is damn near non-existent in the public eye. For example, for years, fans have tried to figure out which -if any- man (or woman) she’s dating, but to no avail. “If It Wasn’t For Missy, Tweet Might Not Be Alive Today.”

Tweet, who was born Charlene Keys, once found herself at rock bottom. Struggling to survive in the music game, she found refuge in her friend and musical collaborator, Missy Elliot. At this year’s Essence Festival (2017), Tweet performed and she also opened about how Missy saved her life.

Tweet On What Missy Did For Her After Depression Drover Her To Alcoholism

In an interview with Sirius XM’s ‘Heart and Soul,’ Tweet sat down and shared how she met Missy Elliot.  She started her career as a member of the girl group, Sugah – a trio that never released an album, but was a part of the Devante Swing’s (of Jodeci), Swing Mob clique. Remember when Devante had the a helluva musical empire with Swing Mob? His label birthed stars such as Ginuwine, Timbaland, and Missy Elliott.

“I met Missy in ’94. We both were in a crew with DeVante from Jodeci.  He had this whole crew with Timbaland, Missy, Playa, Ginuwine, myself,” Tweet told Heart and Soul.

It was later revealed that working for the the mega producer, Devante, was not easy and it came with many challenges. In Timbaland’s memoir, The Emperor of Sound, he shared how working with DeVante was like being in prison. They were made to work long hours without proper compensation, nor rest.

“We would go for days without eating,” Timbaland recalled in his memoir. “We would be woken up in the middle of the night to run crazy errands. We were knocked around, kicked around, and beat down.”

Eventually, Missy had enough and she split. Tweet was heartbroken over that and wondered where her career would take her. Feeling discouraged, Tweet shared how she felt after learning Missy said ‘Peace out’ to Swing Mob back then:

“So, she left to become who she is. Around 1999, she left the group and I was contemplating taking my life,” Tweet admitted to the Essence Fest’ audience during her ‘Heart and Soul’ interview.

Believing that her musical career would not happen, Tweet got a call that would change her life. Missy contacted Tweet with an amazing opportunity:

“Just at that moment, Missy called. We had lost contact for like five years. She called me and said, ‘I need you to be on this record.’ I’m like ‘whatever,’ Tweet admitted. She sent a car and I went to L.A. and then that same visit, I got my deal. Then ‘Oops‘ came out the next year. … When I tell you, ‘Put your trust in God,’ he’ll turn things around for you,’ I’m a witness.”

Tweet’s debut album, Southern Hummingbird, which was produced by Elliott and Timbaland, was a hit, landing No. 3 on the Billboard 200. However, her musical success was short lived because her follow-up album unfortunately bombed. Fans originally were really diggin’ Tweet’s soulful sound on her first album, whereas her second album was more hip hop and that could have been too much for her fans to adjust to from her at that time. That’s when Tweet found herself in a deep depression again:

“I was at my wits’ end. I was drinking every day, smoking three packs of cigarettes. It was like, ‘Come on, this can’t be life,’” Tweet admitted to Los Angeles Times while sharing the spiritual journey that led her back to recording and yielded her third album.

This time, it wasn’t Missy who saved her life, but her fans. Wanting to give up, Tweet’s fans consistently contacted her to let her know that she was loved and missed in the music industry. Tweet was encouraged that she touched the lives of others and she was ready to come back:

“I wanted to give up. People sending me tweets, saying they wanted me back, that kept me. It inspired me. It told me maybe I made a difference in someone’s life and I shouldn’t stop. I was inspired by that.”

Unsure if she wanted to perform again, Tweet released her long-awaited third studio album, Charlene, in 2015 to rave reviews from fans, reminding us all why she’s one of the most talented artists to pick up a mic.

Missy hasn’t released an album in ten years, but she did release a single with Pharrell Williams in 2015 titled “WTF (Where They From)” and she killed it at the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show with Katy Perry. She’s also been doing her thing behind the scenes in recent years, writing and producing for other artists.

In a 2015 interview with Billboard, she expressed her hesitation with releasing new music: “It’s different now. People are quick to be like, ‘You’re irrelevant, you’re a flop, you’re washed up.'”

Well they won’t be calling Missy (45) “washed up” any time soon because now in true Missy Elliot fashion she ‘worked it, put her thing down, flipped it and reversed it’ with her new song and video, “I’m Better” ft. Lamb. In terms of visually, it’s the same flavor of the Missy Elliot we all came to love, with her futuristic style and fly dances. Sonically, she kept the same laid back, yet uniquely fresh flow that she’s known for in her classic hits from back in the day…

Monica and Missy Elliot are about to come UP…waaaay UP, thanks to the #SoGone Twitter challenge that was sparked last week. The challenge- which features music from Monica’s Missy Elliot produced/written song, “So Gone,”- challenges people to freestyle over it.  It’ s taken ‘going viral’ to a whole new level, as millions of people have joined the challenge, including Chance The Rapper, whose participation boosted it’s viralability in a major way.

Now Apple Music, Spotify, and Youtube have confirmed that Monica’s and Missy’s next royalty checks will be NICE! Check out what Forbes reported:

On Aug. 10, Chance The Rapper decided to join in on the hashtag. […] According to Twitter, his participation has helped to spark over 2 million Twitter users to either take part in the challenge or mention it in their tweets. His video has since received over 240,000 retweets…

• APPLE MUSIC confirmed that streams for “So Gone” have INCREASED BY 233% and  SALES HAVE GONE UP 407% since Aug. 10.

• SPOTIFY noted that streams for the single have more than doubled with a 129% INCREASE on their platform.

• As of time of writing, the “So Gone” music video currently sits at 2.8 [MILLION] YOUTUBE VIEWS and has shot up 309% compared to the three days before the challenge.
