fb old post
I ILOSM fam, most of us, Old Schoolers on here, can relate to some moment in time where we realized ‘Damn, I’m getting old as hell.’ Or a time when we at least stopped ourselves dead in our tracks as soon as we heard our parents’ voices, tone, and words involuntarily fly directly out of our mouths and toward our children after catching them doing something they knew good n’ well they had no business doing. Well, now a new trend just popped up on Twitter, called #IFirstNoticedIWasOldWhen. And watching Generation X and up (40 years olds and up) tweet their ‘ah-ha!’ moments of what they refer to as “getting old,” is too funny and ALL too relatable…

And although we, here at ILOSM, refer to aging as becoming ‘Old School- more well seasoned and filled with wisdom,’ we’re not gonna act like some of our 40-plus year old crew ’round were not waking around with Taraji’s school hairdo back in the day…or at least had a girlfriend, sister, friend, or cousin who was…

And we’re definitely not gonna pretend that some of us weren’t runnin’ through these streets lookin’ like “Soul Glo.” With that said, check out the tweets below…

Can you relate to any of these ILOSM fam? Over here at the ILoveOldSchoolMusic office, we pretty much related to every last one of ’em…LOL.

Here’s the new internet sensation who, as of this week, has been dubbed by women from ages 18 to 82 as ‘GranZaddy’ and the hashtag, #MrStealYourGrandma, has even been created in his honor all across social media. It’s probably hard to tell by looking at just a closeup shot of his face, but this man damn near broke the internet (sort of) after females got a glimpse of his body. See the pics that have made this Old Schooler the new ‘internet eye candy’…

bus driver blog pic

Okay family, since when is using a lil’ Old School approach toward disciplining a group of flip-at-the-mouth kids (as my Momma used to say) wrong?

Here’s what happened: Yesterday a video hit the ‘net showing a female bus driver checking a bus full of teenagers who were constantly causing problems everyday on their ride home, because they couldn’t get along. The even bigger problem is that the media and the Memphis school board are blowing this thing up into something way bigger than what it really is. Watch this and tell us what you think…

Before this old school legend reached mega success in the entertainment industry, they were cuffing criminals. Let’s see how well you know your old school fun facts. Is it Donna Summer, Donnie Simpson, or Don Cornelius? The only hint we’ll give you is that there’s one thing you know for sure: This celeb’s name starts with the letter ‘D.’  Scroll down to see who was  out here securing the streets…

The Police Officer Was…

Before he created the hippest trip on television with SOUL TRAIN, Don Cornelius was a Chicago Police Officer on the Southside.

He graduated from DuSable High School in 1954 and joined the Marine Corps, serving 18 months in Korea. He used his military skills to ultimately become an officer.

Frustrated with being an officer for a few years, he quit his day job to take a three-month broadcasting course in 1966, despite being married with two sons and having only $400 in his bank account. That led to him getting a job at WVON (The Voice Of The Negro) as a news reporter.

The next year, he joined the Chicago television station WCIU-TV and hosted a news program called A Black’s View of the News. Three years later, he launched his daily local show called Soul Train on the station he was working for. Of course that would launch into a national syndication after moving to Los Angeles and the rest was history. His show changed the way America saw African American performers and it showcased talent that deserved to seen in mainstream media. For those things among others, we are forever grateful to Mr. Don Cornelius.

On a side note, take a trip down memory lane with us with one of the greatest Soul Train performances of ALL time…

Johnny Gill was at an event for New York City’s WBLS Radio recently. He took the microphone and just went there – all the way there. He broke it down while being on stage in the middle of his show. He starts off explaining his 31 years in the music business. “When you been in it as long as I have, we are not celebrated. Using this little phrase called “old school”. We are not celebrated. In fact, we’re penalized,” says Gill. It’s been said many times that record companies want to focus on youthful acts and once an artist gets to a certain age, they kick them out with the bath water. For us at I Love Old School Music, veterans like Johnny Gill deserve our ears, hearts, eyes and support. But here’s where he gets really deep…

Jean-Paul Goode’s cover of Kim Kardashian for PAPER Magazine / Jean-Paul Goode “Carolina Beaumont, New York, 1976” (1976),

This may be a little out of the norm of our Old School Music vibe, but we were talking about the trends & Kim Kardashian’s copying of this ’76 photo came up…but WHY??? Well, because yesterday there were more pictures released of her Paper Magazine’s Winter 2014 cover featuring Kim Kardashian’s glistening posterior, except this time, we knew we saw that photo before. So we began to research, and lo and behold, there it was, a throwback! Continue reading Kim Kardashian Didn’t Break The Internet, She Copied The Old School 70s
