Oran Juice Jones is one of the coolest cats to have ever laid his stamp on the music game. Before Drake was ever able to merge the lanes between R&B and hip hop, there was Oran Juice Jones, who was the very first R&B artist signed to Def Jam Records back in the day when it wasn’t yet considered cool to blend singers with rappers. Now before we go any further, let’s just get the urge to recite a part of Jones’ classic 80’s joint out of the way…sing it with me now:

“I saw you [and him] walking in the rain, you were holding hands and I’ll never be the same…You know my first impulse was to run up on you, and do a Rambo…I was about to jam you and flat blast both of you. But I didn’t wanna mess up this thirty-seven hundred dollar lynx coat.”

Alright, now that our pimp moment is over, let’s get back to the topic at hand. Before Oran Juice became THE Oran Juice Jones that we all know- the Oran Juice who inspired artists like Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z- he had a completely different occupation. In fact, his job was so far to the left in comparison to who we know him to be now, that we would have never called it a million years! Let’s just say that nobody better not ever think about messing with him, or his people, because he is highly trained and knows how to take a person out.

Oran Juice Jones’ Job Before Music Career

Oran Juice Jones was ‘one of the few, the proud, the Marines’…BUT that’s not all though, Juice was actually a SNIPER OFFICER for the Marines from approximately 1981 to 1986. You know the guys who are always on the roof during a standoff; or when a President comes to town, they’re the ones on the rooftops of surrounding buildings, ready and willing to take anybody out who tries it?

Yeah, that’s what our man, Oran Juice Jones, was. Gotta admit that I would have guessed many other occupations for Juice, like maybe a head manager at a high end hotel, or the owner of a suit & tie company, but to picture him as one of these dudes…

Marine snipers [stock photo]

Nah, I think not.

In 1981 Oran Juice graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and get this, he even made history in his military career by becoming the second African American Brigade Commander in U.S. Naval Academy history. Well, that wasn’t quite making history because he wasn’t the first, but it was close enough, so we still salute the man for it.

Oran Juice Jones now

Once Oran Juice’s music career started bubbling in 1986 –after he signed to Def Jam’s subsidiary company, OBR Records– he’d just completed his term with the Marine Corp and then said ‘peace out,’ deciding to take his music career to the next level. And boy did he ever do that!

If it wasn’t for Juice bringing his swag to the game and talking major smack at the end of “Walking In The Rain” song, many of these music industry cats of today, wouldn’t know how to act. Much respect to Oran Juice Jones for being one of the originators of the R&B and hip hop merger!

What’s Oran Juice up to nowadays, you ask? When he’s not making a few special appearances to perform every now and then, the 65-years-young legend is helping his daughter and son get their budding music careers poppin.’

And boy did he ever do that!

If it wasn’t for Juice bringing his swag to the game and talking major smack at the end of “Walking In The Rain” song, many of these music industry cats of today, wouldn’t know how to act. So much respect to Oran Juice Jones for being one of the originators of the R&B and hip hop merger!

Make some noise if you remember singer, Oran Juice Jones. He was one of the most swagged out cats to have ever laid his mark down in the music game. He was also the very first R&B artist ever signed to Russell Simmons’ Def Jam Records back in the day. We could never forget the lyric to his song, “The Rain,” which as since become an 80’s cult classic hit:

“I saw you [and him] walking in the rain, you were holding hands and I’ll never be the same…”

Although fans could never forget those timeless lyrics, according to Oran Juice Jones, his ex-CEO, Russell Simmons, and somebody over at Universal Music (which ultimately bought out Def Jam) apparently ‘forgot’ to cut Juice his checks over the past 32 years. Most recently, in Will Smith’s 2017 film, “Suicide Squad,” Juice’s “The Rain” song was featured. Jones, was supposed to receive 15% of the music royalties, however, word on the Old School curb is that he ain’t seen one red cent of profit from Universal, nor Russell yet. According to TheJasmineBrand, Oran Juice Jones and Russell Simmons have just sent notarized letters to Universal Music, in effort to demand that they cut the checks to Juice:

Oran Juice Jones’ Claims

“In 1986 I recorded, performed and co-wrote the song “The Rain” which was ultimately released on Def Jam Records in 1986. Russell Simmons and Vincent Bel brought me a song called “The Rain” that Mr. Bell had written. I recorded the song and Def Jam wanted to include it on my album. […] I really liked “The Rain” and felt that I could make it a strong single by re-writing it and making it stand out and sound more unique. Russel told me that i was welcome to, but that the budget on the album was spent and the cost would have to come out of my pocket.”

Jones continued:

…”Mr. Simmons (who was my manager and Mr. Bell’s publisher and manager). Mr. Bel and myself agreed to a writing & publishing split to be 85% for Mr. Bell and 15% for myself. I have contacted Def Jam and Mr. Simmons multiple times since the release of the song, was assured many times that 15% of the copyright was owned by me, despite not having received any royalties. This entire time I have been trying to figure out where my royalties have been going and it wasn’t until recently that I discovered that the song was sampled on the Suicide Squad soundtrack. I was confused as to how it was cleared without my signature or permission.I have never entered into any publishing agreements in my career, so I know that my signature would have been required.”

Simmons’ Claims

LOS ANGELES, CA – NOVEMBER 11: Russell Simmons attends Fonkoze’s ‘Hot Night In Haiti’ Los Angeles Event on November 11, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Amy Graves/WireImage)

Apparently Russell Simmons finally answered Jones’ phone call after decades, because included with Jones’ notarized letter to Universal, was a notarized letter from Russell, co-signing what Jones stated:

“As the head of Def Jam in 1986, I signed the artist, Oran Juice Jones. I provided Mr. Jones with a song originally written by Vincent Bell entitled, “The Rain.” Oran accepted the song and subsequently wrote new lyrics and vocal melodies, which turned it into what I felt was a radio-friendly single.

Mr. Jones, Mr. Bell and myself entered into the agreement to split the writing & publishing on the song, such that Mr. Jones was to receive 15% of the copyright since inception. It has now become apparent that Mr. Jones did not receive the % ownership of copyright that he is so entitled to.

This is an error. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused in the execution of your use of the record. Please correct this discrepancy immediately and implement any adjustments and corrections in Mr. Jones’ favor as requires by the agreement described herein.”

In other words, after 32 years of Oran Juice Jones trying to get his rightfully due money, Russell Simmons finally realized the “error” and probably decided to cut that man his checks because he already has enough of a headache with the pending sexual assault claims against, he definitely doesn’t need any more. And besides, they don’t want Juice to pull a “rambo” on ’em and straight up “flat blast” both of ’em.

His Job Before Music Career

Oran Juice Jones was ‘one of the few, the proud, the Marines’…BUT that’s not all though, Juice was actually a SNIPER OFFICER for the Marines from approximately 1981 to 1986. You know the guys who are always on the roof during a standoff, or when President Obama comes to town they are the ones on the rooftops of surrounding buildings who are ready and willing to take anybody out who tries it?

Yeah, that’s what our man Oran Juice was…told you he was trained. I’ve gotta admit that I would have guessed many other occupations for Juice, like maybe a head manager at the head manager of a high end hotel, or the owner of a suit and tie company, but to picture him as one of these dudes…

Once Oran Juice’s music career started crackin’ in 1986 after he signed to Def Jam’s subsidiary company, OBR Records, he had just completed his term with the Marine Corp and then said “peace out,” deciding to take his music career to the next level.

What’s Oran Juice up to nowadays you ask? When he’s not making a few special appearances to perform every now and then, he’s helping his daughter and son get their budding music careers poppin.’

That was the jam when it came on the radio back in the day. I remember word for word the breakdown where he talked in the middle of the song…[pull_quote_center]I was about to jam you and flat blast both of you.
But I didn’t wanna mess up this thirty-seven hundred dollar lynx coat[/pull_quote_center]
Where is he now? Well he left the music industry to tend to his terminally ill mother and raise his family. He has two children, Oran II, better known as Mookie, and a daughter, Perri Jones.

Both his children are in the music industry, and he helps them with their music careers. In addition to producing and scoring music for commercials and independent movies, Jones also contributes to a number of hip hop blogs, including Global Grind.
