Throughout the years, Denzel Washington was often questioned about why he never kissed White women in his films and eventually the real reason came out. He’s been known to turn down scenes that required him to kiss Julia Roberts and other White female co-stars in the past, while simultaneously accepting other scenes that called for him to kiss his African American co-stars. Denzel had his reasons for stepping away from on-screen kisses with his sistas from another mista. See what he revealed about this below…

It had been twenty years – since 1992’s Malcolm X film –  that Denzel had kissed a White woman on screen, up until his 2012 movie, “Flight.” He had his reason for not doing so and it had nothing to do with him disliking White women, but it apparently had a lot to do with his respect for Black women, as well as his disapproval of how Black actresses were all too often not seen as the object of affection when it came to major motion pictures, so he didn’t want to feed into that stereotype.

NYDailyNews reported this about Denzel’s choices to keep his on-screen kisses off limits with his White female co-stars:

“Black women are not often seen as objects of desire on film. And they have always been my core audience,” confessed Denzel.

Today.com also quoted Julia Roberts as saying this about Denzel’s refusal to get lovey-dovey with her on camera:

“Don’t I have a pulse? Of course I wanted to kiss Denzel. It was his idea to take the damn scenes out,” claimed Julia at that time.

In more recent years, Denzel also stated this about the plight of actresses overall:

“Black or White, there seems to be a cut-off for women,” he said. “Don’t have a couple of kids; you’re out the door. They’re constantly looking for the younger one, the younger one, and for African-American women, women of color, it’s doubly hard. And then for dark-skinned African American women, it’s even more difficult.”

So to sum it up, Denzel didn’t kiss White women in his movies for decades because he refused to disrespect his core fans by playing into Hollywood’s seemingly one-sided view of beauty; and he also empathizes with actresses of all colors because again, he doesn’t agree with Hollywood’s unfair double standards regarding beauty and marketability.

One person who isn’t worried about him kissing Black women, White women, or any other women for that matter, is his beautiful wife of 41 years, Pauletta…

During a prior interview with Wendy Williams, Wendy asked Pauletta Washington how she deals with all the women who want her man, Denzel, and Pauletta replied:

“I am secure as to who Pauletta is. My mother raised me in a way to know who I am and actually, he married me for who I am.”

In a separate interview with Ebony Magazine, Pauletta revealed some inside info on why she remains by Denzel’s side:

“He has and knows he has stability in me as his wife. That’s what gives him strength, regardless if he misuses it… I can’t dwell on that. But I do know that gives him a great platform to go and fly.”

Pauletta turned down Denzel’s marriage proposal TWICE! You say come again? Okay, Pauletta turned down the dude who many women dream of marrying, THE Denzel Washington, not just once, but twice, when he asked for her hand in marriage. Not sure why, but here is what Denzel and Pauletta revealed to Access Hollywood in 2013:

“Three times he proposed to you,” Access Hollywood asked Pauletta, 62. “Yes,” the actor’s wife told Access. “Twice!” Denzel interjected, “It was three times?”

“It was three times. I know with age sometimes things [go], the mind,” Pauletta joked with her husband… Denzel, still unsure about the details, asked, “Why was it twice… Why would I have to ask again?”

“Because I said no,” Pauletta told her husband.

“You heard it here first,” Denzel said. “She turned me down, she said no. And since it was three times, that means she turned me down twice.”

“That’s true. I turned you down twice and the third time we did it,” Pauletta, who has four children with the actor, added.

John introduced himself to The Breakfast Club hosts as John David, which is only two thirds of his name. He conveniently left out the last part — Washington — with the hopes he could set the tone for the interview to be solely focused on him and his work, and not the weight of carrying his Dad’s iconic last name.

John also made it very clear that he was NOT trying to start any mess with his own Dad when host, DJ Envy asked if he was trying to start beef with his dad:

ON WHY FOLKS DON’T KNOW ABOUT PAULETTA’S TALENTS AS MUCH AS WE KNOW HER HUSBAND’S

John says that his mom put her acting career and goals to the side to raise her children because she, nor Denzel wanted their kids to be raised by nannies. So John says he and his siblings were raised by “a village” of his North Carolina relatives – his grandparents, etc. and that’s why he feels he’s as humble as he is as a man.

PRIOR NFL CAREER HELPED TO CREATE JOHN’S OWN IDENTITY OUTSIDE OF HIS FATHER’S SHADOW

He also said his way of stepping outside of his Denzel’s shadow and becoming his own person was playing football. He was an NFL player who played for the Saint Louis Rams, but his first love has always been acting:

JD: I earned my own scholarship, I’m very prideful about that because they (his parents) didn’t pay for my schooling. I was able to make the All American team, I was ranked nationally when coming out of high school. I took it very serious because it was all I had, it was my ‘independent card.’… I wanted to act, but I later became scared, apprehensive because around [the age of] 19, 20 because I was already in this lane of ball.

JD: The business of the NFL will break your heart. I’m so glad that it worked out the way it did. I’ve gotten to see what the business (of the NFL) is like. The best man or best woman doesn’t necessarily get the job.I’ve seen politics (in the NFL). I’m not saying that happened to me, but the ‘the Denzel factor’ worked against me a LOT in that medium.

For John David Washington, it’s very important that not only he gains individuality and independence from his father’s shadow…but it seems he wants to make sure his mother does too, and rightfully so. Being the child or spouse of an icon, like Denzel, has it’s pitfalls…but I’m sure it has it’s perks also, as is evident in everything John broke down for us.

When John David was promoting his film, The BlacKkKlansmen, in 2018 he caught the attention of many during a promo interview when he politely-yet-directly checked the NBC News interviewer.

Apparently, the interviewer gave Denzel props for influencing John David, but not Pauletta. John cut the interviewer off and it was apparent he wanted to make it clear that his Mother deserves far more props than his father, Denzel. His reaction caught the interviewer slightly off guard, but John did made some good points about the dynamic of the roles each of his parents played in his life. See what he said below:

If there’s one thing we love about Denzel Washington and his wife, Pauletta, is that they’ve managed to stay genuinely in love and keep their family in tact, in spite of the rapid Hollywood divorce rates that exist among their peers. After seeing what one of their 4 children, John David Washington, has just revealed about his moms, we love them even more now. Mrs. Washington apparently put actor, Donald Glover a.k.a. rapper Childish Gambino, in a headlock at a public event and it had us crackin’ up at the visual of it all.

In case y’all haven’t heard by now, Denzel’s son can act. He’s best known for his current role on the popular HBO series, “Ballers,” starring alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. At the present moment, John David is promoting his new film, “BlacKkKlansman.” It was during a recent promo stop to the “James Corden on The Late Late Show,” that he revealed what his moms did Donald Glover (see below video).

According to John, Pauletta got a wee-bit overzealous when she saw one of her favorite rappers at the Cannes Film Festival after-party. Her son’s film had just won the ‘Grand Jury Prize’ after debuting at Cannes and therefore, Mrs. Denzel was apparently overjoyed and slightly full of some feel good juice at that moment, as she celebrated with her son. Here’s what John David said happened next though:

“We’re at the after party. We’re feeling good after a standing ovation and all that, everybody’s loving the film, so we’re dancing, we’re on tables, we’re drinking, cheers-ing. Donald Glover comes in. … So I’m like, ‘Mom look, there’s Donald Glover.’ He just came off that big song he had, ‘This Is America.’

So she goes over there and started, like, chokeholding him [and saying] in his ear, ‘You knocked it out, boy.’ Just started stroking his fro ever so lightly, like this. And I try to break them up, like ‘I’m sorry Donald.’… He was cool about it. But I like literally tried to break them [apart], like, ‘Ma, stop, please.’ So my brother ended up taking her home because she was partying like a rock star.”

Well, you can’t knock Pauletta for being in fan-mode that evening, Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” has been like the hottest thing since sliced bread lately and understandably so. The brotha managed to create music with a purpose, in the midst of the unimpressive hot garbage that is largely classified as hip hop today.

So, like Pauletta Washington, we respect Donald Glover/Childish Gambino for staying in his lane and broadening the minds of the younger generation through his art. Although, I must admit that his name switch-a-roo can get a tad-bit confusing at times. Like…how do we know when to address him as Donald and when to be like, ‘Yo whadup Childish?’ Who knows? At any rate, it’s cool that Pauletta enjoys toastin’ it up with her son in celebration of his hard work. Speaking of John’s parents, it’s also pretty interesting to see his legendary pops, Denzel, rap the lyrics to a Cardi B. song.

I guess the Old School saying rings true, when it comes to Mr. and Mrs. Washington: “Age Ain’t Nuthin’ But A Number.” Well…not in the way Aaliyah and R. Kelly referred to in the 90’s…but in the hip-hop-meets-63-year-old-everlasting-love sorta way.

Denzel Washington Reveals The Secrets To A Happy Marriage:

For 35 years, Denzel Washington has been married to Pauletta Washington. They have four accomplished children: actor, John David, 33; actress, Katia, 30; and twins, Olivia and Malcolm, 27, who both work behind the scenes of Hollywood. On June 25th, the couple celebrated their wedding anniversary in a quiet, intimate evening, with just the two of them:

“We just chilled, had some dinner,” Denzel Washington said to PEOPLE. “It was kind of quiet.”

Candidly speaking to People, Denzel shared his infinite wisdom for the recipe of marital success:

“There’s too many things!” said Denzel Washington as he opened up about what he appreciates most about his better half. “What pops into my head: security, food, a beautiful home. The difference between a house and a home, it’s a big difference. You can buy a house, but that doesn’t make it a home – and not to say a man can’t make a home- a home…but my wife has made our house a home and raised these beautiful kids and protected them and sacrificed for them, she did the heavy-lifting.”

Denzel Revealed That His Wife, Pauletta, Runs The Household:

While Denzel Washington is experiencing success, currently dominating the box office with “The Equalizer 2,” –which claimed the #1 spot over the weekend- Pauletta dominates their household. In other words, she’s the HWIC- the head Washington in charge. Denzel definitely follows the marital quote, “Happy Wife, Happy Life,” because the brotha admits that he listens to his wife. The acting legend summed that up with this short straight-to-the-point confession:

“I do what I’m told. I keep my mouth shut,” he joked to People magazine.

In addition to being beautiful and a great mother to their children, Pauletta knows her way around the kitchen. Denzel praised his wife for feeding his soul, as well as his body:

“She has a few [specialties]. I’ve been eating her curry chicken since I’ve known her,” he said. “I used to make it too, but not as good as hers.”

At one point, there were talks of separation, with rumors that the Oscar-winner had cheated on his wife. However, those rumors were quickly dismissed when the Washingtons set the record straight and flat out denied that their marriage was ever on the rocks.

Despite Cheating Rumors, Denzel Let It Be Known That He Was Not Leaving Pauletta:

Like most marriages, Denzel and Pauletta are not perfect, they have had their share of ups and downs, just like us, regular folks. Back in 2013, rumors were circulating that Denzel was caught embracing and kissing some “mystery woman.” There were also rumors that Pauletta had reportedly moved to New York and was contemplating leaving Denzel. Despite the rumors, a rep for Denzel insisted that the actor and his wife were not planning on parting ways, telling the website, GossipCop, that the couple was “not divorcing, not separating.”  This wasn’t the first time that Denzel was accused of stepping out on Pauletta.  At one point, Denzel was rumored to have had an affair with “Out of Time” co-star, Sanaa Lathan, but those rumors were quickly shut down as well.

In an interview with Ebony magazine, the Washingtons opened up about their marriage, with the actor admitting that they are no different from any other couples:

“I live with this man. I see the down part. I see the sad part. I see every part. He has and knows he has that stability in me as his wife. That’s gives him strength, regardless of if he misuses it. I can’t dwell on that. But I do know that gives him a great platform to go and fly,” said Pauletta.
