Salt N’ Pepa’s, Cheryl “Salt” James, was married to the father of her two children, Gavin Wray, for eighteen years (2000 – 2018), and they dated for 10 years prior. Interestingly, Gavin’s character as a man attracted Salt to him far before they’d ever met…and it had everything to do with the heroic thing he’d done for their mutual friend, Sandy “Pepa” Denton.

In Pepa’s memoir, Let’s Talk About Pep,’ she recalled an extremely scary incident when Gavin put his own life in jeopardy, so she and her baby could escape a murderer who’d come THIS close to doing all of them in! It happened around the time of their 1990 “Let’s Talk About Sex” fame and Pepa’s counting her blessings to this day. Below are excerpts of Pep’ breaking down that incident…

Pepa stopped to holla at Gavin…

Pepa: “I saw [Salt’s then-husband] Gavin near this park and I pulled over to talk to him. … That week, this neighborhood guy had just gotten out of jail, and he went on a killing spree. He killed about ten people in a grocery store and was on the run.”

Pepa couldn’t believe that as she was talking to Gavin (pictured above with then-wife, Salt), they came face to face with the ‘killer’ and her baby, Tyran, was in danger:

“The cops were looking for him. Helicopters were swirling around, and this murderer came up to Me and tried to get into my car. ‘No,no!’ I started screaming. “Let me get my baby out, let me get my baby!’

I didn’t care about the car, I wasn’t going to let him drive off with my baby.”

Unfortunately, the murderer didn’t listen to Pep’s plea:

“He knocked me to the ground. This guy was big and buff… I was crying and screaming and trying to pull on this giant man to stop him from taking my car with my baby in it.”

“Gavin started cursing this guy out. ‘You pu$$y! You sucker-a$$ pu$$y! Hey punk!’ Gavin was trying anything to get this man to stop what he was doing, and it was working. His pride couldn’t take Gavin calling him a pu$$y, and it was making him mad and Gavin kept breaking on him. He finally started going after Gavin.

‘Pep, go, go!’ Gavin screamed as soon as the man moved away from the car. I immediately jumped in, but I didn’t want to pull off because I just knew this guy was going to kill Gavin.

The man stopped going after Gavin when he realized what was happening. But it was too late. ‘Pep, go!’ Gavin said.”

Then The Situation Grew Even More Dangerous

Pepa did as Gavin told her to. But here’s how Gavin narrowly escaped death afterwards:

“I jumped in my car and pulled off. Gavin isn’t a fighter. He was kind of skinny and he wasn’t really a street dude. But he was quick thinking and saved my baby’s life. I saw Gavin take off running. He might fake you out, but he never punks out.

The murderer guy must have sensed that if he chased Gavin and beat him to death, there was a good possibility that he would get caught. So he decided to run in the other direction. They caught him a week later. But I will never forget Gavin for that, and I couldn’t thank him enough.”

After that terrifying ordeal, Pep’ and Gavin’s friendship grew tighter, and she respected him so much, that she decided to hook him up with her friend, Salt:

“I had told Cheryl (Salt) all kinds of stories about him before they even met, and by the time they did meet, he was already a hero in her mind. I knew they would hit it off.”

And the rest is history!

Sandra “Pepa” Denton – one half of Salt N’ Pepa – has admittedly been through a lot in her 55 years. She’s had several not-so-great (and sometimes outright horrific) past relationships. She’s also made mistakes she’s not proud of. Nevertheless, they’ve only made her that much stronger, which is exactly what she apparently had to be when she had her first-born son.

In 1990, Pepa gave birth to her now 31-year-old son/”Growing Up Hip Hop” cast-mate, Tyran Moore, with rapper, Tyran “Tah Tah” Moore (who also goes by the name Broderick Riddick, as reported by Daily News. Tah Tah was once reportedly associated with Murder Inc. Records.

Tah Tah reportedly had a few brushes with the law, and 50 Cent once publicly alleged, in one of his songs, that he possibly could have been one of three possible suspects who “shot” him nine times in 2000 (that was never proven, nor were there any official charges filed). However, years before that drama, Pepa was madly in love with the father of her son and she wrote all about it in her book, Let’s Talk About Pep. Unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last…but thankfully, their son is happy and healthy these days.

Pepa confessed, “At this time, I was really feeling my stardom but Tah Tah wouldn’t let me rule over him. This made me want him even more. I became obsessed with him. I wanted to be with Tah Tah every day, every waking moment. I was completely sprung.”

“I ended up getting pregnant. I couldn’t wait to tell him. I went over to the Red Parrot and I just blurted out: ‘I’m pregnant!’,” Pepa wrote.

Tah Tah also got another woman pregnant during Pepa’s pregnancy, according to her book…and it was reportedly a tense time in her life, as a result.

Pepa: “I named our son Tyran, which is Tah Tah’s real name. I named the baby Tyran partly because I wanted to solidify the connection to Tah Tah. But I also did it to spite his girlfriend. ‘Yeah b**ch, I had his first son and he’s got his name!'”

According to Pepa, Tah Tah wasn’t in Tyran’s life as much when he was growing up. Therefore, Tyran Jr. refers to Pepa’s ex-husband, Treach (of Naughty by Nature), as his “Pops.”

In addition to making appearances on “Growing Up Hip Hop, alongside his moms, Pepa and Tah Tah’s son, Tyran Moore Jr. was employed as a Kung Fu sensai at Wing Chun Science. Not sure if he’s still pursuing that particular career at the moment, however.

Pepa Revealed Issue That Caused Him To Be Out Of Son’s Life
Prison Was Partly The Reason
Tah Tah is out of prison now, but at the time that Pepa wrote in her book: “Tah Tah is now in prison. He got tangled up in some mess involving Murder, Inc. and the drug dealer Supreme…. Our son talks to Tah Tah frequently, which I encourage.”

What Does Pepa Think About The 50 Cent’s Accusations?
After 50 publicly alleged that Tah Tah could have possibly been one of the people who shot him back in the day (that was never proven and Tah Tah was never charged for that), Pepa wrote: “I don’t know about all of the that.”  Hopefully, things are in a better place between all of the now.

The things we learn when we do a lil’ diggin’ around here. ILOSM family, Pepa (of Salt N’ Pepa) dropped a few gems a while back that were largely overlooked by many fans. Before there was a Mrs. Jada Pinkett-Smith, or hell…even before a Mrs. Sheree ‘Smith’ (Will Smith’s first wife), Pepa had a chance to shoot her shot at Will…AFTER he’d already put the bait out there for her first. Let Pep’ explain below…

Pepa Reveals Her History With Will Smith

A few years ago, Pepa did an interview with Global Grind, where she talked about Will “Fresh Prince” Smith and the time they used to spend together in the late 1980’s, during the height of Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’ rap success. Although she says she felt Will’s vibes toward her back then, she turned the brotha down:

Pepa: “I thought Will was really cute and we would hang out a lot on the road. He liked to take care of me and never let me spend a dime. He was that kind of guy, real generous. I remember when they won their first award, he asked me to go out with him afterward. He was so excited. We were walking along the street getting ready to grab something to eat, and he just gave this homeless guy $100 dollars…I sometimes kick myself when I think about what could have been. He was so nice to me, but I really wasn’t feeling him. I guess I couldn’t appreciate a nice guy like Will Smith. He wasn’t thug enough. I was attracted to thugs and hoodlums. Will was too nice to me.”

In her interview, Pepa expressed regret for turning Will down, because it seems she later realized the type of guys she was really attracted to at that time, were not the best ones for her. Case in point, was the man Pepa said she was, in fact, diggin’ at that time- MC Hammer’s BROTHER! According to Pep,’ Hammer’s brother was a “thug,” but she loved that about him:

“I liked people like Louis Burrell (MC Hammer’s brother). He was rough, he was street and he didn’t pull any punches. He would walk around with a cane and pimp hat. He always referred to women as b**ches.” Even with all that, I liked him.”

So Many Questions:

1. First of all, Pepa has always been beautiful, but who would’ve thought that Will Smith -the “Parents Just Don’t Understand” rapper- would’ve been bold enough to step to a ’round-the-way chick, like Pep?’ Their personalities seem totally opposite.

2. Next question: Who knew Hammer had a brother…and a ‘thuggish bro’ at that (according to Pepa’s description of him)?

We loved us some Left Eye, here at I Love Old School Music. Although the beloved TLC member has been gone from this 18 years, her legacy and very strong personality will never be forgotten because of the many memories she left behind.  Left Eye was never one to hide who she was from the world. She shared it all- her highs and lows- including that  infamous mansion fire she set to her boyfriend/ex-NFL player, Andre Rison’s, residence on June 9, 1994.

Left Eye spoke several times about that incident in various interviews, but there was one piece of the puzzle that rapper, Salt (of Salt-N-Pepa) let the world know about years later.  In her autobiography, Let’s Talk About Pep, Pepa revealed that she, too,  had a lil’ sumthin’ sumthin’ to do with Left Eye starting that bathtub fire that turned Andre’s mansion into an inferno. Pepa’s History With Andre Rison & Left Eye

Excerpt from Sandra “Pepa” Denton’s book, Let’s Talk About Pep, detailing her involvement in the Left Eye/Andre Rison mansion fire:

It just seemed that all of my problems revolved around men – even when it wasn’t my fault. Even when I wasn’t directly involved. One example of this was in 1994. I ended up in one of those National Enquirer type of magazines under a headline: “Is Pepa a Home Wrecker?” Remember the night Lisa (Left Eye) Lopes burned down the house of Andre Rison (former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver)? Well, I was sort of in the middle of that.

Andre and I never messed around. I’m innocent of that crime. I am so innocent. But I did know him and we were really cool. Salt-N-Pepa used to do a lot of NFL spots for Monday Night Football. And we would do some NFL parties. I met Andre at one of those parties and we hit it off. We went bowling and were bugging out and laughing. I would bump into him from time to time at different clubs. And that was it.

He told me later how everything went down. Apparently he had been talking about me to her. Telling her how cool I was. Brothers, you can’t do that. Your girl will immediately be suspicious. Now, maybe he did like me like that, but again, we never went there. One night, he and Lisa are watching TV and my video comes on, and he gets all excited and says something like “Pep, that my girl!”

The Heated Misunderstanding That Led To The Fire

Pepa then explained, in her autobiography, what transpired the night of the mansion fire:

Maybe she was feeling that he was trying to holler at me and she didn’t like it. That very night, we had a concert at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, and Andre and Lisa came to the show. I got them backstage tickets and the whole nine.

After the show, I was backstage and I left my dressing room for something. At the same time, Andre was nowhere to be found. Lisa came into my dressing room looking for him, and when she didn’t see me and couldn’t find him, she jumped to conclusions. She assumed that we were together. This is what he told me. She finally found him and they went home and argued that whole night. He told me he couldn’t take it anymore and left. When he did, that’s when the teddy bears and the sneakers went in the Jacuzzi with the lighter fluid and the whole house got burned to the ground.

That was a huge story. And the tabloids had started getting wind of what happened. Lisa talked about him cheating, but no one knew the whole story or the truth. Then I end up in this tabloid in a picture from the “Shoop” video with that headline: “Is Pepa A Home Wrecker?” TLC was a big group. And Salt-N-Pepa was huge, too. And you add in an NFL star and a burned-down mansion and you have the makings of a real scandal. It was about to be on. That story was going to catch fire like Andre’s house. I was saved, though. That same week O.J. Simpson decided to kill his wife and her friend in California. And nobody really cared about Andre Rison, Lisa (Left Eye) Lopes, and me. Thank you, O.J.! But that incident showed me how crazy we women can get over a man. I was Lisa. I have been on that side of it…

In her book, “Let’s Talk About Pep,” Pepa recalled the first time she informed her son’s dad, ‘Tah Tah,’ that she was pregnant:

“‘I’m pregnant, and now we’re going to be together, just you and me!’ I started dictating to him how it was going to be. I wanted a ring. I wanted to get married. I laid it all down. He didn’t say a word. So I figured I got through to him.”

Here’s What Pepa Says Her Baby Daddy Did After She Became Pregnant

Pepa Thought She Was Engaged, But…
Pepa went on to reveal that Tah Tah bought her a ring, like she’d requested, and that she assumed that was his proposal:

“Later he would tell me that it was just a friendship ring. That I had pressured him so much, he had to get me something.”

He Didn’t Want A Child…With Pepa

“He didn’t want to disappoint me and didn’t want to tell me what he was really feeling- that he wanted out. He didn’t want to be a father.” … He wouldn’t return my phone calls. He came around when he felt like it. And the more he dissed me, the more I went crazy trying to be with him.”

She Found Out About Other Woman While Pregnant
As Pep’ continued to chase behind Tah Tah, she heard “about some girl named Tasha,” he was dating and “couldn’t believe it.” So she says she popped up at a basketball game, where she knew Tah Tah be…and lo and behold, Pep says he was there with Tasha, whom she recognized from around their neighborhood:

“I could tell by their body language that they were together.”

Baby Daddy Soon Confessed He Didn’t Want Pepa…
Pepa says Tah Tah later confessed that he wanted to be with Tasha, and not her:

“Here I am like four months pregnant with his baby and it was like he kicked me in my stomach. And he was so nice about it…”

Pepa Became “Obsessed”…Salt Tried To Stop Her:

“Guess what? I wasn’t trying to hear that. He wasn’t going anywhere as far as I was concerned. … So I pulled out all the stops. … I started talking to his sisters and going over to his mother’s house. … His poor mother wanted us to be together so badly and even tried talking to Tah Tah.

I was obsessed. I was completely gone. I was trying anything to win him back. I knew that his favorite color was purple. And if I knew I was going to see him, I made sure that I had on a purple outfit. I even painted my nails purple and put his initials on my nails in rhinestones. …  It was embarrassing because I was a star running after this street dude who was dissing me. Cheryl [Salt] would say, ‘Come on Sandy, you have to move on.'”

Tah Tah refused to “hang out” with Pepa and she admittedly “started calling him everyday,” until one day Tasha answered and told her how “stupid” she looked chasing behind her man, claims Pep.

Then Came More Heartbreaking News For Pep’

Baby Daddy Got Shot & Dissed Her From Hospital Bed?
Pep’ was still pregnant with son, Tyran, when Tah Tah was shot at a public event, according to Pepa. Even though they had not been speaking, she says she rushed to the hospital and found Tasha and her family sitting there, reportedly mean muggin’ her. Pep’ says she was defiant and went to Tah Tah’s bedside anyway, but soon got her feelings hurt when he respectfully asked her to “stop doing this,” then sent her away and grabbed Tasha’s hand instead.

Pepa & Baby Daddy’s Girlfriend Were Pregnant At The Same Time
Pep’ also revealed that Tah Tah finally agreed to take a brief trip to Vegas with with her, but spent all his time on the phone with Tasha. That’s when Pep’ also found out he was expecting a second baby- with Tasha, who’s pregnancy was just three months behind her’s.

Moral of The Story:

During the latest Growing Up Hip Hop season finale, Pep’ and her family made it crystal clear that they weren’t feelin’ the idea of Egypt jumping the broom with Sammattick. Matter of fact, that couldn’t have been more evident when Pep’ walked in on the two lovebirds in the middle of their secret wedding ceremony.

Pep’ and her niece, Tee Tee, told Egypt they had several ‘reservations’ about Sammattick- one being that he’s ‘too controlling’ of Egypt. In response, Egypt told them she’s tired of being treated like a child. Nevertheless, the “I’ll Take Your Man” legend shut their ceremony down with the quickness in the video clip below…
