ILOSM fam,’ when you grow up with a dad who’s one of the most iconic musicians/producers ever, you tend to have quite a few interesting throwback memories to share. One such memory is the one Jones’ 46-year-old daughter and “Black AF” actress, Rashida Jones, told during a 2015 interview on Apple Beats 1 radio show, with Vampire Weekend’s host, Ezra Koenig. It involved “Blurred Lines” singer (and son of late “Growing Pains” actor, Alan Thicke), Robin Thicke, and R&B legend, Al B. Sure.

Why Rashida Jones Cancelled Thicke For Al B.

During her Apple interview, Rashida discussed her days growing up with her Pops and actress mom. In doing so, she revealed that in junior high school, she dropped Robin Thicke like a bad habit, for Al B. Sure, but apparently her plan didn’t quite work out when it came to Al B.:

Via Eurweb: “I was 12, 13. His dad was on ‘Growing Pains’ and my mom was on ‘Twin Peaks’ at the same time so we met at an ABC party and we flirted and exchanged numbers, landlines obviously,” Jones recalled. “I called him and asked him to come to junior high prom with me. And then for whatever reason, I don’t remember this, he reminded me of this a few years ago, I called him back and said, ‘I’m so sorry. You can’t come with me because Al B. Sure is actually coming with me.’”

The daughter of Quincy Jones explained Sure was a family friend who was probably trying to be nice, but it wound up not happening. “So you didn’t get to go to the dance with Thicke or Al B. Sure,” Koenig concluded. “I didn’t. I actually worked the door! So sad.”

So, Rashida gave Robin the cold shoulder long before his now ex-wife/actress, Paula Patton, EVER did! For the record, Al B. Sure probably views Rashida as a little sis,’ so like she said, he was probably trying to be nice to her. They have a 7-year age gap and at that time, Al B. was a 19-year-old man, with a very poppin’ music career and millions of grown women practically throwing themselves at him. And besides, as we all know, the “Naturally Mine” singer likes his women older than him. Most of us, Old Schoolers, know damn near everything there is to know about the musical genius of the iconic Quincy Jones. However,  when we fast forward to his present day family life, we have almost no clue about the happenings going on with one of his daughters, Rashida Jones…well, at least most Black folk don’t. It’s not that we aren’t interested, it’s just that her work has mostly geared toward a predominantly White audience, thus leaving a vast majority of her Pops’ fans outta the loop. Details On Rashida Jones’ ‘Secret Baby’

Many Quincy Jones fans had no idea Rashida had given birth to son, Isaiah Jones Koenig, in August 2018. Matter of fact, most fans of the Parks & Recreation and The Office actress, also did not know about the first child she and her famous boyfriend had. Thus, the term, “secret baby.”

Rashida Jones is makin’ major moves these days. According to Deadline, the daughter of iconic music legend Quincy Jones is now set to partner with Scandal’s Kerry Washington for a film adaptation of the female detective novel series, Goldie Vance. Now that 20th Century has acquired rights for Golden Vance, the film company is moving forward with the film. It has been reported that Washington will be producing the film with Jones writing and directing.

‘Goldie Vance’:

The ladies have reportedly teamed up with BOOM! Studios to bring the graphic novel series to life on screen. Both of the ladies are very excited about the new project and looking forward to putting their creative minds together. “I’m ecstatic to be collaborating with Rashida and BOOM! Studios on telling this story. Fox is the perfect home for this project. Goldie Vance will steal your heart. She’s already stolen mine!” Washington said.

Jones also chimed in. “Goldie is exactly the kind of fearless, curious, and funny heroine we need right now,” she said. “I’m so honored to partner with Kerry Washington, BOOM! Studios, and Fox to bring her world to life.”

‘Toy Story 4’:

The latest news follows Rashida Jones’ decision to suddenly quit PIXAR’s Toy Story 4. When Hollywood Reporter first reported the incident, there was no explanation for Jones and her writing partner Will McCormack’s sudden departure. It was reported that the ordeal centered around problems an assault report where John Lasseter was accused of “grabbing, kissing, making comments about physical attributes.”

On Nov. 21, Jones and McCormack released a statement. “We did not leave Pixar because of unwanted advances. That is untrue. That said, we are happy to see people speaking out about behavior that made them uncomfortable. We parted ways because of creative and, more importantly, philosophical differences.” They described Pixar as “a culture where women and people of color do not have an equal creative voice,” adding, “We encourage Pixar to be leaders in bolstering, hiring and promoting more diverse and female storytellers and leaders.” Disney declined to comment on the alleged incident involving Jones though a studio source said the departure was over “creative differences.”

Jones will still be credited as a writer for the fourth installment of Toy Story but that film is a thing of the past for her. She’s focused on moving forward with Goldie Vance.

Sexual Assault Reports About Rashida Jones

John Lasseter is the the COO (chief creative officer) of animated production company, Pixar, and Walt Disney Animation Studios. He also the executive producer of many of Pixar’s hit movies. In early November, he was placed on a six month leave of absence, following several new sexual misconduct reports about him, including one involving Rashida Jones.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story about Lasseter, whose also director of the Toy Story 4 film, which Rashida and her writing partner, Will McCormack, were working on, before suddenly quitting. At that time, it was announced that Rashida and McCormack had unexpectedly walked away from the Toy Story 4 film, but no explanation was given by them. However, employees of Pixar secretly revealed THR that Rashida left because Lasseter made “unwanted advances toward her. Out of loyalty to Rashida, her writing partner said ‘Peace out’ to Pixar’s Toy Story 4 too.

via THR:Rashida Jones is still credited as a writer on Toy Story 4, the next installment in the beloved franchise. But, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, the actress and her writing partner at the time, Will McCormack, left the project early on after John Lasseter, the acclaimed head of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation, made an unwanted advance. THR made repeated requests for comment to Jones and McCormack starting on Nov. 7 but received no response.

Exec’s Vague Response To Claims

Soon after that assault report surfaced, Lasseter was suddenly placed on leave of absence by Pixar and he released a memo about his actions:

In a vaguely-worded memo obtained by The Associated Press Tuesday, Lasseter says he knows he has made some employees feel disrespected and uncomfortable. He apologized to anyone who has received an unwanted hug or gesture and to those he has “let down.” -via THR

Rashida Jones Finally Speaks Out About The Sexual Assault Reports

Fast forward to now, after weeks of going radio silent on the matter, and Rashida and McCormack finally gave the ‘real’ reason for their departure. Although they’re denying Lasseter sexually assaulted Rashida in any way, they are, however, still calling out Pixar for not making sure that women and people of color are equally respected at their corporation.

Either the initial reports about John Lasseter assaulting Rashida were alternative facts, or Rashida and McCormack are now giving alternative facts of their own, in order to go easy on John Lasseter, Walt Disney Animated Studios, and Pixar. Who knows what the truth is? But whatever it is, hopefully some form of justice will be served IF and where it is warranted. At any rate, pretty sure Quincy Jones is proud of his daughter for being willing to walk away from the money to stand up against injustice.

Rashida was known as the one who “passed for White” while they were growing up, according to her sister, Kidada. Kidada tried everything in her power to “be Black” because she simply didn’t fit in with her mother, her sister, nor her White friends. They gave very detailed and interesting accounts of their racial identity issues and their mother and Quincy also chimed in.

Here are some excerpts from their interview:

Their Struggles With Understanding Their Race & Identities

RASHIDA: I wouldn’t trade my family for anything. My mother shocked her Jewish parents by marrying out of her religion and race. And my father: growing up poor and black, buckling the odds and becoming so successful, having the attitude of “I love this woman! We’re going to have babies and to hell with anyone who doesn’t like it!”

KIDADA: …When I was born in 1974, there were almost no other biracial families–or black families–in our neighborhood. I was brown-skinned with short, curly hair. Mommy would take me out in my stroller and people would say, “What a beautiful baby…whose is it?” Rashida came along in 1976. She had straight hair and lighter skin. My eyes were brown; hers were green. In preschool, our mother enrolled us in the Buckley School, an exclusive private school. It was almost all white.

RASHIDA: In reaction to all that differentess, Kidada tried hard to define herself as a unique person by becoming a real tomboy.

KIDADA: While Rashida wore girly dresses, I loved my Mr. T dolls and my Jaws T-shirt. But seeing the straight hair like the other girls had, like my sister had…I felt: “It’s not fair! I want that hair!” […] One day a little blond classmate just out and called me “Chocolate bar.” I shot back: “Vanilla!”

Their Parents’ View On Their Racial Differences

PEGGY LIPTON: I was the besotted mother of two beautiful daughters I’d had with the man I loved–I saw Kidada through those eyes. I thought she had the most gorgeous hair–those curly, curly ringlets. I still think so!

QUINCY JONES: I felt deeply for Kidada; I thought racism would be over by the eighties. My role was to put things in perspective for her, project optimism, imply that things were better than they’d been for me growing up on the south side of Chicago in the 1930s.

Kidada then began to rebel because of learning disabilities and her “different” skin and hair:

KIDADA: I had another hurdle as a kid: I was dyslexic. I was held back in second grade. I flunked algebra three times. The hair, the skin, the frustration with schoolwork: It was all part of the shake. I was a strong-willed, quirky child–mischievous.

RASHIDA: Kidada was cool. I was a dork. I had a serious case of worship for my big sister. She was so strong, so popular, so rebellious.

 

How Kidada Tried Hiding White Mother From Black Friends

KIDADA: I was kicked out of Buckley in second grade for behavior problems. I didn’t want my mother to come to my new school. If kids saw her, it would be: “your mom’s white!” I told Mom she couldn’t pick me up; she had to wait down the street in her car. Did Rashida have that problem? No! She passed for white.

RASHIDA: “Passed”?! I had no control over how I looked. … Today I feel guilty, knowing that because of the way our genes tumbled out, Kidada had to go through pain I didn’t have to endure. Loving her so much, I’m sad that I’ll never share that experience with her.

Their mother’s family didn’t quite treat Kidada the same way as they treated Rashida because of her skin complexion:

RASHIDA: But it was different with our grandparents. Our dad’s father died before we were born. We didn’t see our dad’s mother often. I felt comfortable with Mommy’s parents, who’d come to love my dad like a son. Kidada wasn’t so comfortable with them. I felt Jewish; Kidada didn’t.

KIDADA: I knew Mommy’s parents were upset at first when she married a black man, and though they did the best they could, I picked up on what I thought was their subtle disapproval of me. Mommy says they loved me, but I felt estranged from them.

PEGGY: Kidada never wanted to be white. She spoke with a little…twist in her language. She had ‘tude. Rashida spoke more primly, and her identity touched all bases. She’d announce, “I’m going to be the first female, black, Jewish president of the U.S.!”

Kidada and Rashida both had MAJOR social consequences for being biracial, but their experiences were very different:

KIDADA: When I was 11, a white girlfriend and I were going to meet up with these boys she knew. I’d told her, because I wanted to be accepted, “Tell them I’m tan.” When we met them, the one she was setting me up with said, “You didn’t tell me she was black.” That’s When I started defining myself as black, period. Why fight it? Everyone wanted to put me in a box. On passports, at doctor’s offices, when I changed schools, there were boxes to check: Caucasian, Black, Hispanic, Asian. I don’t mean any dishonor to my mother–who is the most wonderful mother in the world, and we are so alike–but: I am black. Rashida answers questions about “what” she is differently. She uses all the adjectives: black, white, Jewish.

RASHIDA: Yes, I do. And I get: “But you look so white!” “You’re not black!” I want to say: “Do you know how hurtful that is to somebody who identifies so strongly with half of who she is?” … When people don’t know “what” you are, you get your heart broken daily.

KIDADA: Rashida has it harder than I do: She can feel rejection from both parties.

Kidada finally got what she wanted when her mom decided to let her go to a Black school and that’s when EVERYTHING changed for Kidada:

KIDADA: That changed everything. I’d go to my black girlfriends’ houses and–I wanted their life! I lived in a gated house in a gated neighborhood, where playdates were: “My security will call your security.” Going to my black friends’ houses, I saw a world that was warm and real, where families sat down for dinner together. At our house, Rashida and I often ate dinner on trays, watching TV in Anna’s room, because our dada was composing and performing at night and Mom sat in on his sessions. […] I experienced all that heart and soul in black families. I started putting pressure on Mommy to let me go to a mostly black public school. I was on her and on her and on her. I wouldn’t let up until she said yes.

PEGGY: So one day when Kidada was 14, we drove to Fairfax High, where I gave a fake address and enrolled her.

KIDADA: All those kids! A deejay in the quad at lunch! Bus passes! All those cute black boys; no offense, but I thought white boys were boring. I fit in right away; the kids had my outgoing vibe. My skin and hair had been inconveniences at my other schools–I could never get those Madonna spiked bangs that all the white girls were wearing–but my girlfriends at Fairfax thought my skin was beautiful, and they loved to put their hands in my hair and braid it. The kids knew who my dad was an my stock went up. I felt secure. I was home.

RASHIDA: Still, our love for the same music–Prince, Bobby Brown, Bell Biv DeVoe–would bring us together on weekends.

Now it makes sense why Kidada was engaged to Tupac. She chose to be with one of the most prominent pro-Black men of her generation because it probably helped her connect to her Blackness that she was also in search of as a child.
