The legendary, Rick James, detailed in his book, “Glow,” exactly what went down on the night he got into it with the iconic, Prince. It was about to be a clash of thigh high boots, braid extensions, and blouses flying in the air (in a manly type of way though) when Rick and Prince came THIS close to throwin’ blows back in the day! As we all know, Prince was private, but Rick lived his life like an open book, which is why he had no problem revealing that he wanted to -and I quote- “kick Prince’s a$$.” Although it was a serious situation, the way Rick described this is actually pretty funny and a it’s fond memory of two incredibly talented legends gone way too soon.

RICK JAMES CLAIMED PRINCE DISSED HIS MOM?

Rick James wrote about the time he tried to fight Prince backstage at an awards show, after Prince turned down Rick’s mother’s autograph request. To Prince’s credit, he didn’t know that was Rick’s Mom, but that didn’t matter to Rick- he was PISSED after his Mom told him she was dissed by Prince. Here is what Rick James wrote about that night:

That’s all I needed to hear. I chased after that little turd. I caught up with him and was about to lay him out when his manager stepped in.

“What the hell is wrong with you, Rick?” asked the manager. I told him Prince had dissed Mom and that I was gonna kick his scrawny ass. Prince explained that he didn’t know who Mom was. “Well, now you know, motherfucker,” I said.

[…] Prince apologized to Mom and apologized to me. I was a little disappointed ‘cause I really did wanna kick his ass.’

Really? A “turd” Rick?!! LOL…the visual on this Rick James/Prince blow up is hilarious, but that wasn’t the first time they had beef. SEE WHERE THIS TENSION STARTED…

RICK JAMES CLAIMED PRINCE PLAYED HIM

Rick James made it widely known that he wasn’t a fan of Prince. Their issues date back to the late ’70s/early ’80s, when Prince opened up for Rick James’ tour. In his book, “Glow,” Rick alleged that Prince jacked his style on tour, stole his concept for his 80’s girl group, Mary Jane Girls…AND his original lead singer. Rick said he told Prince about his girl group he was building, with it’s lead singer, Denise “Vanity” Matthews. According to Rick, when Vanity saw Prince for the first time backstage at an award show, she left with him instead and never returned to Rick. The next thing he knew, Prince had formed his own girl group, Vanity 6, and made Vanity the lead singer.

Like we always say, there was rarely a dull day in the lives of some of our favorite icons and this is proof of that. In a prior interview, Nona Gaye and her mom, Janis Gaye said Rick James stepped up after his friend, Marvin Gaye’s, untimely death. Nona Gaye was 9 when Marvin was killed by his father. Both she and mom credit Rick James with saving their lives, getting Jan off of drugs and treating them like ‘gold.’ Shocking, considering Rick James’ lifestyle. With Marvin leaving no will and the IRS and creditors hounding the family, Nona said Rick was the one person they could count on for money. She says he literally saved their lives.

“After my husband was killed, I slipped into heavy drugs,” says Janis. “I was very depressed. I wanted to just die like him.” She credits Rick for sending them to a clinic to get cleaned up. According to her, “Rick said your life will be better for it.” The strange thing about it was she said it was crazy because Rick was one person she used to get high with. Now he was changing their lives. By the early 90s, James’ career had stalled and only Teena Marie could deal with him and his habit. But Rick kicked it and tried to save a few others. This is proof that things aren’t always what they seem on the outside. Just when you think you know a person, they sometimes shock you. Outside of the drugs, the alcohol, and wild sex stories, this shows that Rick was still a man of character beneath it all.

Nona Gaye also spoke on how she always saw her Dad (Marvin Gaye) and mother, Jan, do drugs and knew they had a problem. Then, like parents, like child – she unfortunately started doing drugs too at 14 and eventually would do them with her Mom.

Through all of that, Nona was still able find success on film, rather than following the career path of her late father, Marvin Gaye (1939–84). Nona Gaye made one record in the early 1990s before vanishing into years of substance abuse. Becoming a parent herself in 1997 forced her into a healthier lifestyle, and she began earning notice for her small, but well-executed supporting roles in films such as Ali and The Gospel. She also replaced Aaliyah in the two Matrix sequels after our beloved Aaliyah sadly passed away in a plane crash.

Gaye and her younger brother grew up in New York City, Los Angeles, and Ostende, Belgium, where their father had settled for tax reasons. The marriage between her parents, which lasted from 1977 to 1981, was a troubled one, and both had substance abuse problems, but the extreme love Marvin and Jan had for one another seems to still be there even after Marvin’s passing.

Rick James has three children, but it was Teena who actually raised his middle child, Rick James Jr. (who is not her child). As if that wasn’t enough to make us give a resounding “Say what?!!,” the manner in which Teena ended up being Rick Jr.’s ‘mother’ is even more surprising.

Rick James Caught Teena By Surprise

When asked in an interview about how many children she has, Teena replied:

“I have a daughter who sings….she’s really awesome…she’s with me every night [performing] and she goes by the name of Rose LeBeouf (Rose has since changed her stage name to Alia Rose).

I have also helped to raise many children. I have four other ‘daughters’ that call me Mom and..I raised Rick’s (Rick James) son, little Ricky. And um, Rick was a funny cat, he um, he couldn’t find his kids (laughs and shakes her head). Cocaine is a helluva drug (crowd laughs).

So his sister and I, we went looking for Ty and lil’ Rick, and we found lil’ Rick when he was about eight and his sister, Ty, was eleven. And Rick [Sr.] looked at me and Penny and he said “I, I, I can’t take both of ’em!” and I was like ‘Huh?!!’ I was like ‘I just met these kids, what are you talking ’bout?’ [Rick said] “Listen I can’t take both of them T, you gotta take one.” I was like “What do you mean I gotta take one (laughs)?!! He said “I’ll take the girl.” ‘I was like ‘I’ll take the boy.’

When asked what was her inspiration behind “Cassanova Brown?” Teena confessed it was Rick James. Go ‘head Rick! That’s real love when a woman is writing songs about her ex-boyfriend…and more importantly, raising his child!

Teena and Rick’s story reminds us of what a wise man once said: ‘If a woman unconditionally loves your kids as if they were her own, that’s the woman to keep.’

Not sure if Rick had a chance to hear that wise man’s words, but unfortunately he didn’t ‘keep’ Teena (or maybe she dumped him, who knows) but in his heart he ‘kept’ her close for not just unconditionally loving him, but also loving his son, Rick Jr.. May Rick and Teena both continue to rest peacefully.

Rick James Exposed What Blair Did To Hurt Him & Detailed Hit Song He Wrote About Her

It’s “Rick James bi*%#!” That’s right, Rick and Linda were a couple in the 70’s and from what it looks like, they had two very different perspectives on their relationship.

In his memoir, “Glow,” Rick James admitted that Linda hurt him deeply by aborting his baby. Here’s what he said about it:

“Actress Linda Blair (The Exorcist) came to Buffalo to see me and I was very happy to see her. A few months before her visit she had called to say that she had-had an abortion, and that it had been my child. She said she was in the middle of shooting a movie and was starting to show, and she didn’t think I would care anyway. She was wrong. I did care deeply. I loved Linda and it hurt me that she would choose to abort our child without even wanting to talk to me about it first. I still look back on her choice with sadness and wonder about our baby, and how having that child might have changed me life.”

James also said that one of his biggest hits was written about Linda Blair:

“One night during her visit, I took her into the studio and we sat down at one of my synthesizers. I was showing Linda how to write a song on keyboards and I started playing. I told her that in composition you’re ok as long as you keep playing. It’s when your fingers stop moving that you’re in trouble. The next thing I knew I was composing a tune about her called, ‘Cold Blooded.’ She was the inspiration for that song.”

Linda appreciated the song and said this about it:

Cold Blooded is, ‘You’re hot!’ Cold Blooded is a compliment. That was pretty nice that he wrote that about me. I don’t see it, but OK”

Linda admitted that prior to meeting James, she saw him in a magazine and instantly fell for him. Then in the 80’s, they hooked up. Her recollection of their relationship was a little less intense than what Rick James expressed though. We’re not sure if she was purposely trying to cover up certain facts that she may not necessarily have been proud of, or if she just views their time together differently, but nevertheless, here’s how she described their 2 year situation:

“I wouldn’t say that we were as romantic as people probably wished that we were, or thought that we were.”
[In 1984 they’re relationship started to fade out] “I could not bear to be around that. It wasn’t healthy for me and it wasn’t healthy for him, so I chose after a while to walk away.”

Although Blair and James seem like the odd couple, they actually had more in common than many may think. She proved that she had a carefree side, like James, when she posed nude for Playboy back in the day and although Blair left James because of his excessive drug use, Linda too, had her troubles with drugs. In the late 1970’s she was busted with cocaine and was charged with drug possession and conspiracy to sell drugs. She plead guilty to a lesser charge of conspiracy to possess cocaine, in exchange for three years’ probation and a $5,000 fine. As part of her plea deal, Blair had to make at least 12 major public appearances to speak to the younger folks about the dangers of drug abuse.

Just like Rick James’ drug and legal woes caused his career to plummet at times, so did Blair’s. She even has been quoted as saying that her career “went down faster than the Titanic.”

It would have been interesting to see what would have come of Rick and Linda’s relationship, but based on their history, maybe it was better that they broke up.

We all remember when the late, great Rick James released his girl group, Mary Jane Girls. They were dominating the music game with hits like, “In My House,” “All Night Long,” and “Candy Man.”

Well over the past 3 decades since their release, a few of them have been very vocal about their once tarnished relationship with Rick. One of the members, Maxi B. (circled in the photo up top), has put it ALL out there and what she said about how she felt when Rick passed away is shocking. Before we go any further, we want to point out that what she is referring to has also been confirmed by Rick himself, in his autobiography and overall it’s just really sad that the relationship turned that sour on both sides of the coin.

In an interview on Blog Talk Radio, Maxi B had this to say:

Maxi B.- He (Rick) mishandled all of our (The Mary Jane Girls) careers. He blocked us all from having prosperity in the industry. People often ask me, you know, why didn’t any of you do anything? The reason is Rick James….he held us back….he signed us to a 20 year slave contract. […]

He just didn’t let us step out of our box like Vanity and Appolonia (Prince’s artists)…all of those girls got to step out and brand and now they can do things and it still hurts us because people are looking at us and realizing that we haven’t done anything in over 30 years.

So when Rick died…it’s when I decided okay ‘That demon is off of my back. Ding dong the Wicked Witch is dead. Now I can go on and pursue…[it’s] never too late. I’m older now, but I’ll just go on and do it in another demographic.I believe that if you had talent then, you have talent now.’ And now I’m doing things that I never got to do thanks to the internet.”

Maxi also said Rick was doing everything he could to make sure they didn’t succeed and that she was crushed after Rick allegedly put out the word in the industry, that no one can do business with any of the girls, because they were in a 20 year contract with him and that he no longer wanted to make money off of them. She also said she was extremely hurt when she read Rick’s book, “Memoirs Of A Superfreak,” and saw that he said he wanted to “break the Mary Jane Girls” so that they couldn’t make money. Wow!

Rick James Told His Side…

Here’s what Rick revealed in his book about that whole situation in his true RAW style…

Rick James- “One of the most upsetting things happened when the Mary Jane Girls went behind my back to Motown saying all these lies about me. Joanne (JoJo) McDuffie, the ugly duckling, was the biggest liar of the bunch. She said the cruelest things about me to the press, things that just weren’t true.”

Joanne had married this neighborhood Buffalo trick named Robert Thunderbird who was always hanging around trying to get his slimy hands on any of the girls. Joanne, being the homeliest, was weak for him. The day they got married, I could see he was after the fame and the money.

JoJo started to change after “My House,” was released. She started to get stuck up. The Mary Jane Girls were scheduled to do a video, JoJo wanted $30,000 to do the video. I screamed, ‘What? No one, not me, not Prince gets paid to do videos. We just do them to help our careers.’ I told my brother to deal with the stupid b**ch. I think he gave her $15,000, after that, I was through with JoJo. She embarrassed me, herself and everyone by trying to come across like a f*cking superstar. And I had made her!

I had began to cut another album on the Mary Jane Girls, but after six or seven songs, I said, ‘F*ck it! They aren’t worth it. […] After all the lies and accusations, I deserted them.”

Geesh! It’s very sad that their story ended this way, but like we always say here at ILOSM: great success cannot exist without great failures. We understand that many of our favorite celebs are flawed humans, which is perfectly natural and okay. The more we understand that they are flawed, the better we understand that they are no different than the rest of us.

It’s been eleven years since R&B legend, Teena Marie, passed away on December 26, 2010; yet it seems like it was just yesterday the world was abruptly hit with the devastating news..

Because Teena lived a private life –other than the time she dated Rick James– that led many people to wonder if it was Rick James who was in fact the father of her daughter. Rick had a very close relationship with Teena’s lil’ girl and they were sometimes photo’d together- just the three of them.

Teena Marie’s daughter is all grown up now and she has since spoken out to let people know who her real daddy is- is it Rick or someone else? Hmmm…scroll down to find out…

The Father Of Teena Marie’s Daughter Is…

Alia Rose’s daddy is….[drum roll please]…NOT Rick James! In a previous interview with 2 Black Girls And A Mic, Alia confirmed what her Mother has previously said- that Rick James is not the pappy, although Alia is very close to him. Alia Rose’s father is a postal delivery man named Peter and here is what else Alia had to say about her real father:

“My Mom has mentioned my father’s name plenty of times, people just wanted to think that my dad was Rick James. When she said my father was Peter, they didn’t hear that, no, so they’re still looking…LOL. But yeah, it’s never been something that my mom has tried to hide.”

Teena Marie Confirmed Who The Father Was Also

Prior to Teena Marie’s untimely death, she also confirmed that Rick James was not the father of her daughter when she said:

“She’s [Alia] a little Sista, she’s just naturally a Sista. She always jokes with me and says, ‘I didn’t get my soul from my Dad, I got it from my Momma.’ It’s funny because Alia’s father is Black; he’s a postman.”

Teena Paid Homage To Daughter’s Father In Song

Teena Marie had just finished recording her 14th album, Beautiful, just before she passed away on December 26, 2010, and she even wrote a song about Alia’s father on the album. The album, Beautiful, was released posthumously and the single paying homage to Alia’s father was titled “Luv Letter.” It was named after the Marvelettes song, “Luv Letter,” which was written about a postman, just like what Alia’s father is in real life.

Daughter Describes Her Close Relationship With The Late Rick James

Alia Rose revealed to Essence that Rick James was like an uncle to her and that they were very close:

“He had the craziest, funniest voice. Se said Rick would say, “Come over here and give your uncle a kiss,” every time I saw him. He always wanted me to marry his son, Tazman. As a kid, I saw the craziest stuff over there at his house. It was all fun,” she said.

And there you have it folks! The rumor is final OVER! This is great news for some and disappointing for others who wanted that “Fire and Desire” that Teena and Rick had for each other in the early 80’s to have produced a love child, just like so many of their fans produced as a result of getting down to their music.

We all know Rick was a wild dude, but geesh …let’s just say that he was way more complex than just being a “Super Freak.” A few things surfaced that Rick James confessed to doing back in the day in his posthumously released autobiography, “Glow.” And his confessions are ranging from wild, to ‘what in the world was he thinking?’.

1. Uh…beastiality? We knew James had some wild sexual encounters, but this is just…well, you’ll see…
In his later years, James was constantly battling his addiction to freebase cocaine, and usually losing. After his mother died, he reported, “there was nothing to keep me from descending into the lowest level of hell. That meant orgies. That meant sado-masochism. That even meant bestiality,” wrote Rick James. No details provided (or honestly, needed).

2. Rick confessed to having ongoing beef with two music legends.
James held a serious grudge against George Clinton, for consuming his cocaine but never helping him get a record deal, and Prince, who stole his style (and, James claims, his stage moves). Bringing Prince out on tour didn’t go well for Rick: “My band was a bunch of friendly down-home brothas loved by everyone. His band was a bunch of snobs who never bothered to acknowledge my guys.”

Years later, what gave James the push to collaborate with Eddie Murphy was that Eddie had gone in the studio with Prince but felt uncomfortable around Prince, so Rick James said this; “There wasn’t anything I’d rather have done than write a hit for Eddie — and stick it in Prince’s ear.”

3. Let’s just say, James got a very early start. He says he lost his virginity at 9 or 10, to a 14 year old girl.

4. His mother once worked for the mob?

According to Rick, he ‘and his seven siblings were raised by his single mom, who ran numbers for the mob in Buffalo,’ as reported by New York Post.

5. Cocaine made James do some strange things.

James made his national TV debut on American Bandstand. He performed his singles “You and I” and “Mary Jane” and did a long interview with Dick Clark, who he remembers as “one of the nicest cats I’d ever met.” The only problem: James had done so much blow backstage, his nose started running profusely. “I started sniffing and wiping myself until it had to be obvious to Dick and a million viewers what was really going on.”

Rick had quite a colorful life to say the least, and he will forever be a music icon in our humble opinion.
