Actress and former Soul Train dancer, Rosie Perez, has always admitted that she had serious anger issues back in the day. She recalled one heated incident when things got way out of hand on the set of Soul Train. One such situation apparently got ugly between Rosie and her then-boss, the late, great Don Cornelius…and let’s just say that neither Don, nor Rosie didn’t play that!

In her book, Handbook For an Unpredictable Life, Rosie Perez told the story of how she went through a LOT of torment as a child and was a ward of the state of New York by the age of 3. Her experiences of physical abuse at the hands of her Mother, the nuns at the Catholic children’s home she was sent to, and having to fend for herself, is what lead her to make the decision to do what she did to respond the way that she did when Don Cornelius made her angry. She says in hindsight, she thinks she overreacted, and this is what she said happened in a prior interview with Soul Train:

Rosie Perez

Interviewer: You didn’t just fight kids at school. You fought back against the nuns. Then you got into a fight with Don Cornelius when you were on “Soul Train.” Can you tell us that story?

Rosie Perez: That was a clue that I needed help. I thought, “I’m so together. I’m in college. I’m going for my major in biochemistry. I’m fantastic,” you know? “I’m on ‘Soul Train.'” And if you just pressed the wrong button, it was, like, just a nuclear explosion would occur in me.

That’s what happened with Don Cornelius. He touched me, and pulled me, and yanked me inappropriately. I freaked out, and I just started swinging, and started grabbing things. The first thing I grabbed was a two-piece Kentucky Fried Chicken. It was a low point. I was beyond embarrassed. I was still walking out with this pathetic bravado like, “So? I don’t care. I don’t care.” By the time I get in the car, I start crying. I felt like an idiot.

Interviewer: You threw a chicken wing at Don Cornelius’ forehead?

Yes. It’s embarrassing, and it was so wrong. I thank goodness that we were able to make up before his passing. But that’s what I mean it’s like, “Am I really enjoying my life? If I am this person holding on to this anger from the past, am I really enjoying my life?” No.

Geesh…Rosie was no joke back then! I guess Don didn’t have time for a feisty 5’1″ woman hurling chicken wings at his forehead every time she got mad about something.

Seriously though, if a man puts his hands on a woman inappropriately, by all means she has every right to react however she sees fit. We don’t condone anyone “pulling, touching, or yanking” anyone, but I think what Rosie is saying is that the extent of what Don Cornelius’ action was, was not as extreme as what she processed it as in that particular moment. So, it seems like that’s probably why she’s now saying her reaction to him was wrong.

Nevertheless, the good news is that Rosie says her anger issues are under control now. Like we mentioned earlier, her anger management issues come from a deep place of childhood pain and abuse from school nuns, according to her book. So to her credit, she didn’t just come here that way…but she had to do a lot of inner soul searching and healing to overcome her past struggles. Props to her for doing the work.

The cost of fame sometimes challenges entertainers to weigh their moral compass, in order to ensure that their center is in a place that allows them to rest easy at night and awake to a reflection they still respect in the morning. For actress/choreographer, Rosie Perez, her personal morals were tested during her days as the character, “Tina,” the ’round the way Puerto Rican girlfriend of Spike Lee’s character, “Mookie,” in Do The Right Thing.

The year was 1989, when Rosie became the one of the breakthrough stars in the film. Two dynamic scenes helped solidify her spot – (1) her impressive dancing in the opening credits of Spike Lee’s joint and (2) the unforgettable intimate scene where “Mookie” dripped ice cubes over her bare breasts on a hot summer New York day.

Those scenes helped garner Rosie the titles of ‘bold,’ ‘beautiful,’ ‘fearless,’ ‘relatable,’ ‘talented,’ and so one. Unfortunately for Rosie, she hated the bare breasts scene. In fact, she hated it so much that she cried throughout the entire shooting of it.

Rosie Perez Tells Why She Cried During Filming

In a prior interview with New York Times, the Soul Train veteran admitted she felt violated, even though she was the one who actually agreed to shoot the nude scene. Rosie also stated that she finally spoke publicly about it, because her then 14 year old stepdaughter informed her that she’d seen her nude screenshots, from the movie, online. That’s when Rosie began to question whether, or not, she felt comfortable standing behind her work 100%…apparently she does not:

Rosie Perez- “My first experience [with doing nude scenes] was Do the Right Thing. And I had a big problem with it, mainly because I was afraid of what my family would think — that’s what was really bothering me. It wasn’t really about taking off my clothes. But I also didn’t feel good about it because the atmosphere wasn’t correct. And when Spike Lee puts ice cubes on my nipples, the reason you don’t see my head is because I’m crying. I was like, I don’t want to do this. I felt like Irene Cara in ”Fame.” It was like, Wait a minute, I feel so wimpy, this is not who I am. So that was my first experience, and it was horrible. But then I went and took my clothes off again for ”White Men Can’t Jump”! But that was because it was totally my decision, I felt totally comfortable, the director was so cool and Woody Harrelson was like, Well, whatever you want is cool with me. So there I felt empowered by it. But with ”Do the Right Thing” it was like, ‘Now I’m the object, here’s the shot.’ And the reason why I cried was not so much because I felt violated as because I was angry at myself, because I wanted to say: ”Say something! Get up!” So that’s how I felt violated. I felt like I violated myself.”

Embed from Getty Images

Her Brother Brought Machete To Meet With Spike?

Even though she felt “violated,” in all fairness to Spike Lee, it’s important to note that Rosie Perez previously admitted that she was not threatened, nor forced to film her nude scene in Do the Right Thing. According to Daily News, she recalled in her memoir, Handbook For An Unpredictable Life, bringing her knife-wielding brother to set to ensure Spike Lee didn’t try any funny stuff during her nude scene negotiation:

Via DN: [Rosie] Perez fought Lee over the naked scenes, and later charged him with exploiting her. She actually had her brother-in-law, a drug dealer who came to the meeting with a machete in hand, negotiate that there would be “no ass-crack, nothing close to the vagina.”

Wow…gotta luv Rosie for making sure she was protected by any means, and much respect to Spike for still keepin’ it professional in the midst of tense hurdles they faced behind the scenes at that time.

Actress and former Soul Train dancer, Rosie Perez, has always admitted that she had serious anger issues back in the day. She recalled one heated incident when things got way out of hand on the set of Soul Train. One such situation apparently got ugly between Rosie and her then-boss, the late Don Cornelius…and let’s just say that neither Don, nor Rosie didn’t play that!

She says in hindsight, she thinks she overreacted, and this is what she said happened in a prior interview:

From her accent, to her Boricua pride, Rosie Perez has been a cultural staple since the golden era of hip hop. As a noted choreographer, she has been entertaining audiences for years; and as an actress, she’s been in many memorable roles. So naturally when somebody has a career like hers, there are going to be a few stories that make you say, “What The Hell?”. And if Rosie’s involved, those stories likely won’t just be shocking, they’ll be pretty funny as well.

Kicking The Door Open

Rosie first came to our attention during Spike Lee’s critically acclaimed 1989 film Do The Right Thing. And everyone remembers the opening credits with Rosie seductively gyrating her way into our hearts. Especially those of men who immediately asked “Yo, who is THAT?”

With that kind of introduction (and a scene involving Spike, Rosie and ice cubes) she was destined for superstardom. Soon after she starred in the equally popular White Men Can’t Jump with Wesley Snipes. She also snagged gigs as a choreographer for videos and television shows, including In Living Color. But nowadays Rosie is recognized more for her acting. And some of the stories she has from the set are funny. And strange.

During an appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, Rosie revealed a few interesting stories from movies she’s starred in, though she couldn’t give out all of the information. Throwing on a blindfold, she began by telling the story of a weird interaction during a sex scene:

“We were in the bed and I was supposed to get up but he was in the bed naked. And when I got up naked, and turned around, his penis wasn’t there.,” Rosie explained to Andy.

But There’s More…What Rosie Detailed About Her On-Set Sexual Encounters Stunned Many

Embed from Getty Images

Rosie Perez continued:

“He had tucked his penis, but without telling me and I was like what the f–k?!” she exclaimed. “I’m standing there naked and these are real and they were kind of [motions swinging breasts] and he goes, ‘What?!’ and I go, ‘Nothin’!’ and we had to keep going.”

Rosie also admitted that a fellow celebrity once hit on her by telling her she had a “Butt like a biscuit” (which ain’t smooth at all). However, the weirdest thing she revealed involved her co-star wanting to bite her:

“It was during a fight scene and my costar, he said, ‘Can I bite you in the t*t during the fight?’ and I said ‘No,” she said. “And he said, ‘What about your a$$?’ and I said ‘Okay.'”

The last blind item may refer to her role in Pineapple Express, where she mentioned her scene with co-star, James Franco.

“James Franco and I kind of threw away the choreography, too, and went for it,” she told CBS’ Early Show in 2008. “He went for my butt, too! He bit my butt, which wasn’t great and it didn’t even make the movie and I am kind of pissed off about that.”

Geesh…Rosie was hardcore back then! I guess Don didn’t have time for a feisty 5’1″ woman hurling chicken wings at his forehead every time she got mad about something.

The cost of fame sometimes challenges entertainers to weigh their moral compass and make sure their center is in a place that allows them to rest easy at night and awake to a reflection they still respect in the morning.

Two dynamic scenes helped solidify her spot – (1) her FIRE dancing in the opening credits of Spike Lee’s joint and (2) the unforgettable intimate scene where “Mookie” dripped ice cubes over her bare breasts on a hot summer New York day.

From her accent, to her Boricua pride, Rosie Perez has been a cultural staple since the golden era of hip hop. As a noted choreographer she has been entertaining audiences for years, and as an actress she’s been in many memorable roles. So naturally when somebody has a career like hers, there are going to be a few stories that make you say “What The Hell?” And if Rosie’s involved, those stories won’t just be shocking, they’ll be pretty funny as well.

During a recent appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, Rosie revealed a few interesting stories from movies she’s starred in, though she couldn’t give out all of the information. Throwing on a blindfold, she began by telling the story of a weird interaction during a sex scene:

“We were in the bed and I was supposed to get up but he was in the bed naked. And when I got up naked, and turned around, his penis wasn’t there. “

There’s More…What Rosie Said Revealed About Her On-Set Sexual Encounters Next Stunned Many>>>

The cost of fame sometimes challenges entertainers to weigh their moral compass and make sure their center is in a place that allows them to rest easy at night and awake to a reflection they still respect in the morning.

Two dynamic scenes helped solidify her spot – (1) her FIRE dancing in the opening credits of Spike Lee’s joint and (2) the unforgettable intimate scene where “Mookie” dripped ice cubes over her bare breasts on a hot summer New York day.

Wow…gotta luv Rosie for making sure she was protected by any means and much respect to Spike for still keepin’ it professional in the midst of tense hurdles they faced behind the scenes at that time.

Actress and former Soul Train dancer, Rosie Perez, has always admitted that she had some serious anger issues back in the day. In case you haven’t heard by now, things got way out of hand on the set of Soul Train when the unthinkable happened between Rosie and her boss, the late Don Cornelius, and let’s just say that neither Don, nor Rosie didn’t play that!

She says in hindsight, she thinks she overreacted, and this is what she said happened…
