Remember when actor, Giancarlo Esposito, starred as “Julian ‘Dean Big Brother Almighty’ Eaves”– the leader of Mission College’s Gamma Phi Gamma Fraternity in “School Daze”? Back then he was fairly new to making a name for himself in Hollywood, and on his way to legendary status. However, fast forward to decades later and Giancarlo says his life took a painful turn for the worse. So much so, that the brotha actually plotted having a hit put out on his own life.

In a recent interview with SiriusXM’s “Jim & Sam”, when Giancarlo was promoting his new AMC drama series, “Parrish,” he explained how he was severely broke shortly before landing his popular role on the hit series, “Breaking Bad.” It was during that low point in his life, in 2008, when Giancarlo was nearly bankrupt and desperately trying to figure out how to provide for his four children. After seeing no way out, he contemplated a murder plot on his own life:

Giancarlo Esposito- “My way out in my brain was: ‘Hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Do they get the bread?’ My wife had no idea why I was asking this stuff. I started scheming. If I got somebody to knock me off, death by misadventure, [my kids] would get the insurance. I had four kids. I wanted them to have a life. It was a hard moment in time. I literally thought of self-annihilation so they could survive. That’s how low I was.”

Luckily, he landed “Breaking Bad” just in time:

G.E.- “That was the first inkling that there was a way out, but I wouldn’t be here to be available to my kids. Then I started to think that’s not viable because the pain I would cause them would be lifelong, and there’d be lifelong trauma that would just extend the generational trauma I’m trying to move away from. The light at the end of the tunnel was ‘Breaking Bad.’”

Much respect to Giancarlo for sharing his truths with the world. Thankfully, he was able to see that there was in fact light at the end of the tunnel before it was too late.

The year, 2022, marks the 34th anniversary of “School Daze.” It was in 1988 that the film broke boundaries in Hollywood. It opened up sore spots within the Black community, allowing those ‘sores’ to be picked, peeled back, exposed, and healed all at the same damn time. It let mainstream America know that films about predominantly African American colleges and it’s students could in fact pull numbers at the box office. Above all that, “School Daze” was the creation of a then-31-year-old Morehouse graduate, who was fresh off the hills of his ’86 success, “She’s Gotta Have It.”

There are countless memories that I- like many- will forever remember about the film. There was “Dap’s” (Laurence Fishburne) encounter with the older Atlanta natives in that fast food parking lot, when he had to tell the brothas “We’re not nig&as.” Or his ingoing battle with the pretty boy “G-Phi-G” frat leader, “Julian” (Giancarlo Esposito). We can’t forget the classic dark skin/light skin back n’ forth between the culturally aware “Jigaboos” and the sadity “Gamma Ray Wanna-Be’s”- a play on the real world complexion complex that still unfortunately exists today. As the world watch “School Daze” challenge many social issues, behind the scenes Spike had to tackle some of those issues on his own, just to create the film.

Why Morehouse President Kicked Spike & Crew Off Campus

Spike initially chose to shoot “School Daze” at his alma mater, Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA and in the beginning stages of filming, everything was all good…until it wasn’t. Just two weeks after filming began, Spike Lee, along with the entire cast and crew, were kicked off Morehouse’s campus for a very sad, superficial reason, according to Spike.

The president of Morehouse at that time, was Hugh Morris Gloster, a lighter complexioned brotha. Ironically, Gloster kicked them off Morehouse’s grounds, due to the very issue that was being covered in the film- Black on Black bias/colorism. Here’s what Spike revealed in a Feb. 2018 interview with Atlanta Journal Constitution:

Via AJC- Lee recalled a “sad” meeting with [Hugh Morris] Gloster, after he was kicked off campus, to plead his case to stay. “He said to me, ‘I don’t like the guy you cast as the college president (the late, great Joe Seneca). He looks too much like a sambo,’” Lee said. “He said that to my face. When he said that, I said, I know what we were doing was right. Because I had the president of Morehouse telling me the man I cast as the president was too dark-skinned.”

Spike Lee ended up taking his production just across the way from Morehouse, to film at Morris Brown college instead.

To make matters even worse, Spike revealed in a separate interview, that he wasn’t even invited back to Morehouse for the rest of Gloster’s presidency, but then he got sweet revenge:

“As a matter of fact, after this film came out, I wasn’t really invited back to Morehouse for several years. Really until the guy that was president left. But now I’m on the Board of Trustees, so it’s been a long while. But that was really hurtful at the time.”

The Tragedy That Inspired Spike To Create School Daze

In that same interview, Spike also revealed that the one of the reasons he wrote “School Daze” in the first place was because he wanted to shed light on the dangerous hazing that oftentimes goes unnoticed at HBCU’s. Why? Because a fellow Morehouse student’s death raised his level of awareness at that time:

“We show all the ills of these organizations. In fact, after I finished Moorehouse, a brother died pledging Alpha Phi Alpha. That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to get into this fraternity thing, or this sorority thing for that matter. It always amazes me the amount of abuse and punishment people will put up with, just to belong to a group. To any organization. I mean they will fu*k you up.

What most of us never knew was that he and Spike Lee figured out that they actually couldn’t stand working together during the filming of Spike Lee’s School Daze and here’s why according to what Laurence Fishburne told Sun Sentinel in a prior interview:

[Fishburne] rolls his eyes when asked about his experience with Lee. “I`m very opinionated, I have a very big ego; Spike has a very big ego, too,”  he says. “I`ve been around for a long time, and I thought I knew more about what he was doing than he did. And, in some ways, I did. But it wasn`t so much that I knew more about what he did — I knew more about what I` was doing, and I made the mistake of telling him that. So we probably won`t work together for another 10 years,” Fishburne says. Chuckling, he adds, “If we work together at all.”

Well get outta here! On camera it looked like all of the actors got along great off screen because of the great chemistry they had on screen, but it sounds like it was hard for Fishburne to take direction from someone he deemed to be far less experienced than him at that time. Dang, he was right- those egos were massive on that set.

I guess Spike Lee eventually extended the peace symbol to Fishburne because he was able to get past his dislike for him when he reached out a few short years later to offer Fishburne the role of “Radio Raheem” in Do The Right Thing. Fishburne was actually Lee’s first choice before Bill Nunn, who ultimately did a phenomenal job with that character.

But Fishburne wasn’t trying to have anything to do with the movie. After he read the script he was like “Hell no!” LOL. Here’s what Laurence said about why he absolutely didn’t like the script for Do The Right Thing:

Fishburne criticized the role for not being real when he said “I’m from Brooklyn too and I didn’t grow up in that kind of Brooklyn. I didn`t like the script, and I didn`t like the part.” -via Sun Sentinel

Many actually speculated that Fishburne’s refusal was less about the role not being ‘authentically Brooklyn’ enough and more about these two factors: (1) because of his beef with Spike; and (2) because Spike Lee didn’t offer him a lead role in Do The Right Thing.

And there you have it folks. Laurence and Spike were not the best of friends on School Daze, unlike the united front their characters had as ‘cousins’ in that film, and Do The Right Thing almost had “Professor Phipps” (Fishburne’s character in Higher Learning) as the “Radio Raheem” character. Now that I think about it, it would have been really different watching “Jason Furious Styles” (Cuba Gooding Jr.’s “Daddy” in Boyz N’ The Hood) or “Morpheus” from the Matrix morph into the role of “Radio Raheem,” but I can definitely see “Dap” from School Daze pulling that character off.

All in all, both School Daze and Do The Right Thing were classics, but the stars just didn’t align for Spike Lee and Laurence Fishburne to work together on the latter. However, the late Bill Nunn played the heck out of that “Radio Raheem” character and I don’t think that either one of the films would have been the same without what Nunn or Fishburne contributed to them.

The ‘80s film, School Daze, was about college life on a predominately Black college campus, “Mission College,” but it was also about the ever-present stereotypes and stigmas that still plague society today in regards to skin complexion, race and hair. Well the truth of the matter is that director, Spike Lee, did a great job recreating that tension not just on-camera, but off-camera as well. In order for him to get the best out of the actors, he wanted to create a real life atmosphere that may spark some tension between those who played the high-sadity characters and those who played the self-aware and “JigaBoo” characters, so he did something about it.

Spike separated the actors’ living quarters throughout the duration of filming. He had the “WannaBe” actors stay in a higher end hotel and the “JigaBoo” actors stay in a less extravagant hotel without as many accommodations and frills.

And that is where the REAL-LIFE tension was probably bred. So much so, that the fight scene we saw during the “Daddy Long Stroke” chant that “Dap” (Laurence Fishburne) and his boys were performing at the Greek show was as REAL as a hundred dollar bill! That’s right, when “Dap” and the fellas started chanting “So just get back, or we’ll kick your Gamma a$$” to the “Gamma Phi Gamma” fraternity, things got really real. A fight broke out between the actors -that was NOT in the script- and Spike apparently told the camera crew to keep filming as the fight continued. As you can see, they kept that chaotic scene in the movie. That is crazy right?!!

This actor grew up to become a star in some of our favorite ’80s and ’90s movies. His characters were always some of the most memorable every time he graced the big screen. One character in particular will forever be a defining moment within his career because it was one of our first introductions to him and his performance made the industry take notice.

Who Is He?

He is none other than the one and only “Radio Raheem” from Do The Right Thing!

Actor, Bill Nunn — who sadly passed away in 2016  — was also know for his other popular roles as “Grady” from School Daze; “Nino Brown’s” bodyguard, “Duh Duh Duh Man” in New Jack City; and “Bottom Hammer” in Mo’ Better Blues. Bill also starred in several roles since those infamous classics, but he’ll always be “Radio Raheem” to us.

Though it may seem like it was just yesterday he was playing a college dude in School Daze and bumpin’ Public Enemy out of his boombox in the Bronx neighborhood in Do The Right Thing, Bill was 62  years young when he died from leukemia. But up until his last days he was showing youngin’s how it’s done on-screen.

He is survived by his widow, Donna, and his two children, Cydney (pictured below) and Jessica.

Remember “Dap’s (Laurence Fishburne’s character) girlfriend on School Daze don’t you? Her name is Kyme Sallid and although she had a few roles after School Daze, it was her groundbreaking role as “Rachel,” that we remember most. We can’t forget the infamous beef “Rachel” had with “Jane Touissant” (Tisha Campbell) in that whole jigaboo/wannabe drama and I also remember when “Dap” felt like “Rachel” was selling out after she told him she was pledging Delta.

After Spike Lee said ‘it’s a wrap’ on the final scene in School Daze, we eventually saw her pop up sporadically for guest appearances on shows like Frasier, NYPD Blue, and 24, but we didn’t see Kyme much more after that.

What Kyme Sallid a.k.a. “Rachel” Is Doing Now

Kyme is now 58 and she’s been doing what her other true passion is — teaching professional dance to young people. Kyme is a graduate of the acclaimed New York City High School of Performing Arts, and has performed nationally and internationally as a dancer and singer in various Broadway shows. Her love of the performing arts and teaching led her and her husband, Otis Sallid to found a performing arts academy in a charter school in Los Angeles in 2006. She and Otis actually met on the set of School Daze and have been together ever since.

They eventually moved to Atlanta in 2012 where they continue to share their passion with a younger generation of dancers. She and her husband have been training many young dancers throughout the years and oftentimes do it for free merely because they love to teach those kids. She had this to say about why they enjoy what they’re doing so much:

“We teach more than steps here– we’re teaching life lessons to these kids that they’ll have forever,” Kyme explains. “ The skills I’ve learned from training in dance, I’ve used in every aspect of my life. There’s a sense of commitment, discipline, how to work with others.”

Khyme and Otis have been married since 1996 and they have two children together. During Otis’ time on Broadway he met and became friends with up and coming celebrities such as Sherman Hemsley, Morgan freeman, Raul Julia, Jeff Goldblum, Melba Moore and Gregory Hines. After Broadway he worked with Spike Lee in the on School Daze and like we said, that set is where he also met Kyme. Otis joked and said he had to chase her all over the world because she was warned not to date him because he was a ‘bad boy.’

It’s great to see Kyme and her husband doing what they truly love, but it would also be good to see her back on the big screen again, the industry certainly needs to see more talent like her. One thing’s for sure, Kyme’s dancing skills seem to have come in handy for that classic dance-off between the ‘jigaboos’ vs. ‘the wannabees.’
