Drake is one of those celebrities who seems to be showing up in our timelines every day. Recently, he’s been partying with the Toronto Raptors, since they clinched their first championship title. However, Drake’s time for celebrating may be coming to a halt very soon…if one accuser has her way.

Guess Who’s Back?

All right y’all, there’s a lot going on here, so let’s unpack it together. In 2017, Instagram model, Layla Lace (born Laquana Morris), alleged that Drake impregnated her after they hooked up, following his concert in Manchester, UK. She also claimed that when she attempted to reach out to him, after telling him she was expecting, Drake stopped all communication with her.

After hiring a lawyer, Lace then alleged that during their one-night stand, Drake had instead raped her. Drake countered her ‘suit with one of his own- suing Lace for civil extortion, fraud, emotional distress, abuse of process and defamation. He admitted the two of them had unprotected sex, but it was consensual.  He also furnished text messages that painted Lace as an obsessed fan.

Things further fell apart when Lace refused to submit to a paternity test. Eventually, it was allegedly discovered that Lace wasn’t even pregnant! Once the smoke had cleared around the entire situation, both Drake and Lace settled their lawsuits privately. At the time, Drake’s lawyer told TMZ (via Rolling Stone):

“The filing made by Drake against Layla Lace has been resolved, with Layla avoiding going to trial by agreeing to a stipulated judgment which prohibits her from repeating past statements she made against Drake.”

The Legal Claims Against Simmons

Both complaints were filed before the end of December, TMZ reported. One of the women who went to the police with her accusation is Sherri Hines, a member of the all-girl rap group Mercedes Ladies. Hines said that in 1983, she visited Simmons at his office under the guise of discussing a possible record deal with his label Def Jam. She was only 17 or 18 years old at the time. Hines told Megan Kelly on TODAY that he held her down and raped her on the couch in his office.

“The way I felt at the time was… I can’t believe this man just violated me like I was nothing,” Hines recalled.

The second woman who accused Simmons, has chosen to remain anonymous. She alleges that Simmons assaulted her at his home in Manhattan in 1991. The then-32-year-old reportedly told police that the two had gone out on a date. Upon returning to his place, Simmons allegedly made sexual advances towards her and tried to remove her dress. The woman rebuffed his advances and he then “forcibly raped her.”

Simmons has denied all of the allegations against him. He had gone on the offensive to publicly fight the claims against him using social media and even took a polygraph to disprove the claims of one of his accusers. On Dec. 14, Simmons launched a #NotMe movement, in response to the #MeToo movement being launched against him. He has since abandoned the defense tactic.

Russell Now Clappin’ Back Against Claims Again

Page Six reported that Simmons’ reps told them that he had a change of heart. Simmons said that “this is a time for women to speak.” But since these two latest charges have been filed, Simmons has made an about face and assumed his original posture.

“I vehemently deny all these allegations,” Simmons said in a statement issued by his representative, Eric Rose, as reported by USA TODAY. “These horrific accusations have shocked me to my core and all of my relations have been consensual. The current allegations range from the patently untrue to the frivolous and hurtful,” he added. “The presumption of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ must not be replaced by ‘Guilty by Accusation.'”

So we’ll have to let the police do their work. There is no statute of limitations for rape in New York, so the NYPD will have to investigate every last one of those complaints. This is gonna be a long year…

Russell Simmons is pulling out all the stops and has decided to “properly defend” himself against multiple allegations of rape. He took to Instagram on Thursday with a post announcing once again that he is innocent and intends to prove it. Simmons has launched a #NotMe hashtag which has set Twitter ablaze.

“Today, I begin to properly defend myself. I will prove without any doubt that I am innocent of all rape charges,” Simmons wrote. “I will focus on ‘The Original Sin’ (Keri Claussen), the claim that created this insane pile on of my #MeToo. Stay tuned! We’ll share information today… And tomorrow the case of Jenny Lumet.”

Now, some people are wondering if Simmons is making a huge mistake. As common procedure, the NYPD has opened an investigation into some of the charges against him. Twitter’s responses to the music mogul’s new campaign would suggest that he is committing suicide in the court of public opinion.

Citing the article in Variety about Simmons claims of innocence, Michaela Angela Davis responded to his #Not Me hashtag with a “not now.”

Simmons Wants Lie Detector Tests For Himself & His Accusers

While there are many who believe that Simmons has a right to face his accusers and defend himself, the #NotMe hashtag, others believe it seems hostile and comes across as a slap in the face to those who have told their #MeToo stories. Against his attorneys’ advice, he has even started taking lie detector tests and has challenged his accusers to do the same. Simmons wants to hold his accusers accountable, but this strategy may very well backfire in his face. On Nov. 17, actress, Aurora Perrineau, filed a report with the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department accusing GIRLS writer and executive producer Murray Miller of raping her in 2012. At the time of the alleged incident, Aurora was only 17 years old. Her father is actor, Harold Perrineau, who’s best known for playing “Julian” the pushover boyfriend in The Best Man films. Harold has been silent for weeks since Aurora went public, but he offered a very powerful message on Twitter today.

Yet another powerful Hollywood figure has been accused of sexual assault and Aurora’s #MeToo story is particularly sickening. Miller was 35 when they first met at the Standard Hotel. Aurora was there with two friends having drinks. She said that he kept flirting with her in spite of Aurora telling him that she was only 17 years old. She said that Miller was too drunk to drive and asked one of the girls to give him a ride home.

Once they arrived at Miller’s home, everyone got out of the car– Aurora reluctantly followed. The next thing she remembered was waking up to being assaulted.

“At some point, I woke up in Murray’s bed naked. He was on top of me having sexual intercourse with me. At no time did I consent to any sexual contact with Murray,” Aurora said in the statement as reported by The Wrap.

Aurora took a lie detector test to add validity to her claims which she passed with flying colors. The powers-that-be, however, immediately started circling the wagons. Miller’s legal team first asserted that Aurora was making false allegations in an effort to exploit money from him. They have since retracted that statement.

However, GIRLS showrunners Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner sent a statement to The Hollywood Reporter saying that Aurora’s accusation is “one of the three percent of assault cases that are misreported every year.” They believe that Miller is innocent and they are sticking by his side.

Haskell alleges that while employed by Sports 1 Marketing in California where Moon co-founder and president, her boss made “unwanted and unsolicited sexual advances towards her.” The suit alleges that since Moon hired her in July 2017, he forced her to “submit to a variety of unnerving sexual and perverse controlling arrangements, including sleeping in the same bed with him on all business trips, providing him unfettered access to the bathroom every time she showered, wearing skimpy lingerie while in the obligatory single room, obtaining prior approval for her wardrobe, and being subjected to continuous unwanted and unsolicited sexual advances.”

According to Paul Silvi of Seattle’s KING 5 TV, Moon denies all of the charges against him, but the lawsuit documents some disturbing allegations that he must now disprove. Haskell alleged that Moon drugged her during a business trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. She said that he then stripped her of her swimsuit while on the beach. Haskell accused Moon of groping her and threatening to fire her in an email where he vowed to “find someone who doesn’t have inhibitions about the job.”

The Washington Post reported that the 32-year-old complained about Moon’s harassment, which included sharing a hotel and bed with him when traveling, but was demoted by the Irvine, Calif. firm in October. Haskell never reported the alleged sexual assaults to police. Miami-based attorney Diana L. Fitzgerald attempted to explain why her client chose to remain silent.

“I think she was scared,” Fitzgerald told The Post. “She was expecting to further her career in the sports marketing industry. She had no idea that her job duties were going to involve that kind of perverse protocol.”

In spite of a decorated career in the NFL and recognition as a staunch humanitarian, less-than-stellar incidents from Moon’s past are being brought back into the spotlight. Moon was sued by a Minnesota Vikings cheerleader in May 1995 for sexual harassment where he reportedly propositioned her for sex in exchange for money. The case was quickly settled out of court.

That same summer, his then-wife Felicia told police that Moon had slapped and choked her. A jury found him not-guilty after she testified that she provoked the altercation. The couple divorced in 2001. He has been married to Mandy Ritter since 2005.

Crews tweeted a screenshot of a text conversation with his agent Brad Slater recounting what happened on Feb. 4. Here’s how he captioned it:

According to the screenshot, Crews texted Slater on Feb. 6 at 3:18 p.m. telling him what happened and who witnessed it.

“Brad– your boy Adam Venit– I was hanging with Sandler the other night and he was DOPED UP. It was embarrassing. Sandler had to call me to apologize. He actually grabbed my NUTS. I wish I was making this up. Becky was right there. Somebody needs an intervention–QUICK. He almost got knocked out. I kept my peace but I ran outta there. This wasn’t drunk bro. I know drunk. It was like bath salts or something,” Crews told Slater.

Slater replied, “Wait….. Whhhaaat??? Calling you. It will be me from a 424 number.”

On Nov. 27, Crews had already tweeted a copy of a Huffington Post letter that he had given to Ari Emanuel, reminding him that he had publicly called for the blacklisting of Mel Gibson after the veteran actor was caught making anti-Semitic remarks to a cop.

Even in the face of such damning evidence, the agency refuses to publicly acknowledge what happened to Crews. This speaks to one of the many reasons why women and men don’t report sexual harassment and assault.

Ever since Crews filed a formal police report with the LAPD and went public with an interview on Good Morning America (GMA), the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star has been attacked on social media and warned about outing Venit. Crews isn’t letting anybody get away with trying to belittle, nor intimidate him. He’s posting all the receipts on Twitter.

On Nov. 19, the day after his GMA sit-down with Michael Strahan, Crews got an email from Radar Online, threatening to run a false story about Crews hiring prostitutes. He knew that going head-to-head with one of the most powerful men in Hollywood would be the fight of his life, but Crews is not backing down.

“1 day after my @GMA interview, @radaronline threatened me w/a false story abt me hiring 2 hookers at the 2015 Monte Carlo TV Festival,” Crews wrote captioning the email from the media outlet. “It never went 2 press because it was a lie. This was not a coincidence. I told you they were coming 4 me, I also told you I am ready.”

The same day, Crews posted an email he received from Russell Simmons on Nov. 3, telling him to give Venit a pass and ask that he be reinstated. Crews responded to Simmons on Twitter: “Dear @uncleRUSH– NO ONE GETS A PASS.”

A particularly disturbing post, that Crews posted today, was a letter which included a marked up Huffington Post article written by Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel. In the article, Emanuel called for Hollywood to blackball Mel Gibson for making anti-Semitic remarks to a cop back in 2006. Crews replaced Gibson’s name with Venit’s and the words “racism and bigotry” with “sexual assault” and gave it to Emanuel. Crews said that Emanuel remarked, “it’s different” and handed the letter back to the actor. Does that mean different as in “not the same,” or different as in “not as important”?

The bottom line is that Crews has declared war against the pervasive and persistent predatory culture in Hollywood and the cards are stacked against him. But just as Emanuel wrote in that Huffington Post article, “there are times in history when standing up against bigotry and racism is more important than money.” For Crews, the crime is sexual assault. And if he wins the fight, WME stands to lose more than money…

Upon his exit, the former NFL player and fitness buff confirmed the filing and told the reporter why he did it.

“Because, you know, people have to be held accountable,” Crews said.

When asked if he also planned to file a civil suit against his attacker, Crews made it clear that he would. He said that his attorneys will help him decide how much money he should demand in the lawsuit.

Who Attacked Crews?

The reporter then tried to get Crews to do something that, thus far, no one has been able to do–get Crews to name his attacker. But the actor hopped into his SUV without offering an answer. Reports revealed last week said that the culprit was Adam Venit. He heads up the motion picture group at William Morris Endeavor (WME). Crews is represented by the agency. According to TMZ sources, the actor named Venit in his formal complaint.

Deadline reported that Venit has been on administrative leave ever since news of the allegations broke. He is still employed by the agency. Venit’s client list includes big-name talents including Adam Sandler, Sylvester Stallone, Emma Stone, Brett Radner, and Dustin Hoffman. Ironically, Radner and Hoffman are now faces sexual harassment accusations of their own.

What Made Crews Come Forward?

This entire series of revelations started when Crews tweeted his #MeToo story referencing the assault that he said took place at an industry function last year. The “high level Hollywood executive came over 2 me and groped my privates,” Crews wrote. He said that his wife witnessed the assault.

Crews resisted the urge to beat the man up because he immediately realized that a big, strong, 240-pound Black man who stomped out a “Hollywood Honcho” probably wouldn’t fare well legally or professionally. Crews did talk to everybody he knew that worked with his attacker about what happened the next day. But he didn’t know what else to do until now.

Taking Action

Crews said that coupled with the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal, his experience gave him PTSD. He had to speak out. Many have commended him for his brave stance which could have serious implications for his career. On the other hand, there are those who still believe that men don’t get harassed. Crews should just keep quiet, keep working, and take the money and run.

And given the way things are going these days, Terry Crews’ conclusion would’ve been accurate.

That would’ve been the headline (or worse), and it probably would’ve been accompanied by several angles to Crews’ arrest.

Terry mentions that the Hollywood executive called him soon after to apologize for his actions.

UNDERSTANDING VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT

According to Terry Crews, he definitely empathizes with women who choose to stay silent for similar reasons regarding sexual assault experiences. In a tweet, Crews mentions as follows.

All in all, Terry is definitely the bigger man by keeping his first instincts reserve and not pummeling the daylights out of that “high-level Hollywood executive.”

Sometimes, you have to think passed the moment and see how your actions, responses, or reactions might affect your life…as well as those around you.

At the end of the day, all you can control are your own responses.
