R&B legend, Shanice Wilson, just let the world in on something serious. The powerhouse vocalist who blessed us with that timeless track, “I Love Your Smile,” recently opened up about a major health scare. In an emotional reveal, Shanice shared that she had to undergo life-saving double mastectomy surgery, and the journey has been anything but easy.

Shanice took to her Instagram to break the news, saying, revealing that she had “stage one one centimeter tumor one of my breasts.” She explained that when she’d initially undergone the surgery three months prior, she wasn’t yet comfortable enough to share the news publicly. But now she feels “strong enough” to do so now.

The surgery wasn’t just about looks or convenience; it was about survival. Shanice kept it real with her followers, sharing, “This surgery saved my life, and I’m thankful for all the prayers and love sent my way.”

“Please everyone get checked,” she urged before thanking her team of doctors and herbalists who helped her get through this. She also thanked her husband of 24 years –actor, Flex Alexander– for “helping me get through the hardest time of my life,” adding, “You helped me every day with my drains and cooked all my meals. I love you. I am healed and restored in Jesus name.”

Flex also posted this heartfelt message on his Instagram page:

“Just had to say how extremely proud of wifey @shaniceonline i am! She took this head on like the SUPER WOMAN that she is!! Life throws us curve balls and we can either crumble or stand strong, i thought child birth was deep but that pales in comparison to the valley she’s come through! Ladies Please STAY ON TOP of your mammograms , screenings, ultra sounds etc!! This experience was eye opening and so surreal and i am thankful she’s come out on the other side of it all💖💖🎀🎀🙏🏾🙏🏾 thank you to all of our friends, family and supporters.”

In true Shanice fashion, even in the face of something so terrifying, she’s staying positive. She’s not just surviving—she’s thriving. She returned to Instagram a day after announcing her surgery, to express her deep gratitude to everyone for their kind words, while also displaying her positive message of hope and faith. She declared, “God is not done with me yet,” while simultaneously reminding everyone to stay on top of their health. And to the delight of her fans, the 51-year-old songstress also announced that she will be droppin’ new music in the near future, and we cannot wait!

They revealed, in a heart breaking confession on their reality show, that they were struggling really hard financially for a while, but that the show has helped them to start getting some things back on track. “Smile” singer, Shanice Wilson, and husband, Flex Alexander, have been successful in many areas of their lives. She was a popular 90’s R&B singer and Flex is a well-known actor and comedian. Although he has a pretty lengthy filmography with numerous television and film projects under his belt, he’s probably best known for his hit UPN series, One On One. The show ran for five seasons before it was canceled in 2006.

Long before the success of One On One, or any other acting/comedic routine of Flex’s, he was hired by several singers and rappers, including Mary J. Blige, Salt-N-Pepa, and Queen Latifah. Wait ’til y’all see what he did for them below…

Flex Reveals What Jobs He Worked For Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa & Mary J. Blige

Most fans know all about Shanice and Flex’s careers in music and film, but many have no clue about Flex’s other talents. In fact, Flex first shocked the hell outta us when he revealed that he was a dancer for Salt N’ Pepa back in the day. Not only that, but get this…that’s how dude got his name, Flex:

“That came from hip-hop dancing. I was real flexible and all that. My boy Stretch, another dancer, a legend in the game, gave me that name.” -Flex, via Soul Train

After his Salt-N-Pepa days, Flex then graduated to higher status when he worked as a choreographer for Mary J. Blige and Queen Latifah for quite some time, before the world knew him as Flex- the comedian/actor.

Spinderella (of Salt N’ Pepa) told People Magazine about how Flex’s natural comedic talent used to always crack them up when he was their dancer:

Via People- Recalls Spinderella, “He was always the comedian”—doing impressions of everyone from Jesse Jackson to Homer Simpson. Encouraged by his pals, he developed a stand-up act.

During his interview with Soul Train, Flex broke down how his reputation as a dancer/choreographer led to the opportunity to act, when casting directors gave him his first role in Juice:

“It was a natural progression. Dancing put me around the right people and I learned a lot. Going to stand-up was an easy transition because I was always kind of goofy. Transitioning to acting came through stand-up. They were casting for a movie called Juice. They came to the Uptown Comedy Club and saw me. I auditioned for the role that Omar Epps ends up playing. Then it came down to the wire. They liked me so much that they gave me a little part with Queen Latifah. It was fun. The transition was pretty smooth; one flowed right into the other.”

Shanice and Flex have gone through some things that many people would have become defeated by when their careers kind of stalled for a while. At one point, they were soaring off Flex’s standup and TV career, as well as Shanice’s singing, but after a few years into their 13-year-marriage, money started to become a major problem. They’d had kids. Flex’s show One On One was a wrap, the phone calls for work stopped, and Shanice’s singing career was at a standstill. Although they’re bouncing back now, it’s still tough for them to think about their struggle and Flex got kind of choked up while talking about this on camera.
