Comedian and “The Talk” co-host, Sheryl Underwood had everyone tearing up on during a prior episode of the talk show. While discussing talked about the 2018 suicide of 54-year-old fashion designer, Kate Spade, the topic became too much for Sheryl to bare — causing her to reflect on her deceased husband as well.

Sheryl Underwood Breaks Down Over Husband’s Suicide

Sheryl Underwood has the incredible ability to make us all laugh at will, but behind her comedic talent is an immense amount of pain. One such pain is that of her husband committing suicide in 1990. They dated for seven years; and three years after they’d wed, he decided to take his own life. While covering the tragedy of Kate Spade in a now-deleted video of “The Talk,” some of the similarities in the details surrounding her death, hit a little too close to home for Underwood.

“I’m kinda emotional about this because as you know my husband killed himself,” Underwood said through teary eyes. “You will never know. For people who think they know. You’ll never know if it’s clinical depression. You’ll never know if it’s financial stress.”

Kate was married to Andy Spade (brother of “Saturday Night Live” legend, David Spade). She hung herself in her home just after leaving a suicide note for their 13-year-old daughter, Frances Beatrix. The note read, “Bea – I have always loved you. This is not your fault. Ask Daddy!”

Sheryl Underwood confessed that Kate’s suicide note is only going to make the pain worse for her daughter, because that’s exactly what happened to Sheryl, when her own husband left a suicide note:

“I’m sad for her daughter, for that to be in the note because my husband left a note,” Underwood added. “And what the note does to the person who is still alive is, it shows that the person who is no longer alive has now had the final word. There’s nothing you can do about it now. And that pain … it doesn’t go away. I really hope that the family can come together for her daughter because it just doesn’t go away.”

Law enforcement confirmed that Kate Spade was depressed because her husband wanted a divorce, and also because of business problems. Her husband also stated that after their separation a few months ago, she began drinking “a lot.”

Underwood has unfortunately had to endure other horrific tragedies in her life, but she refuses to allow them to defeat her:

Via People- [Sheryl Underwood’s] childhood was destroyed by sexual and emotional abuse. Just out of college she was raped, and her attacker was never caught. … “I’ve been through a lot,” the comedian reveals in the latest issue of PEOPLE. “But it’s not all woe is me. This is a journey.”

Like Sheryl Underwood said, because Kate Spade’s suicide note was vague, her 13 year old daughter, Frances, will never truly know why she took her life and left her a mother-less child. Kate’s actions may have been selfish and irrational, but they were clearly rooted in extreme pain. Hopefully, with the help of people like Sheryl Underwood sharing their stories with the masses, it may encourage someone else who may be contemplating suicide, to reconsider their actions and seek help.

SARAH GILBERT’S OPINION:

That’s when co-host/actress, Sarah Gilbert, who was also clearly frustrated and was evidently recently awakened to the fact that police continue to target and kill African Americans:

Sarah Gilbert: “This is a new low to me…It’s so disheartening to me. He [Terence Crutcher] didn’t have a weapon. He didn’t have any drugs. He didn’t have any behavior that was alarming. His arms were up. I don’t understand. There was…practically seven police officers there or something. Why this officer could’ve interpreted as a threat, is so beyond me. I mean, I don’t know…maybe it should be prosecuted when someone uses such poor judgement like this…I mean that’s the only thing I can think of [as a resolution to how you stop the unwarranted killings by police officers].”

AISHA TAYLOR’S OPINION:

Then co-host, Aisha Taylor, who was also highly upset, stated her point that it’s time for America to cut the BS and start looking at racism for what it is, so that we can all fix the problem:

Taylor: “Look, this is hard stuff to talk about, but we have a legacy of racism in this country and if we don’t start calling this racism then we can’t fight it. […] Cops have to be trained differently. […] We have to change how we see each other, and we cannot do that until we say what it is, which is that racism and fear of Black men specifically drives these shootings. We have to change as a nation, fundamentally!”

SHERYL UNDERWOOD’S OPINION:

Lastly, Sheryl Underwood chimed in with her stance on America’s injustices and she soon began to break down in tears while discussing the massacres of so many innocent Black people by police officers:

Underwood: “You don’t have to train the police not to shoot White people, why you got to train them not to shoot us? […] First thing you gotta do, you gotta make it a hate crime. You gotta put people in jail, when you shoot somebody under the color of authority you need to lose your job and you need to lose your livelihood and you need to lose your freedom, like every other American loses their freedom.” Sheryl then tearfully added, “Remember there are good police officers out there and the ones that are not, they need to go jail. Don’t tell me this, we got to train! Y’all White and y’all drive all the time and don’t nothing happen to y’all. And we black I’m afraid to drive my damn car! Until y’all feel that, this is not going to stop! Until y’all who are non-Black feel that and stand with us, this is NOT going to stop!”

While on the other hand, Terence Crutcher’s four children and family are crying endless tears of grief and planning his funeral as we speak. We have to change this all too common reality…
