ILOSM family, we’ve sadly lost another icon. It’s just been confirmed that actor, Sidney Poitier, has passed away at the age of 94 years young. The details surrounding his cause of death are scarce, but here’s what’s been confirmed so far:

Via TMZ: The office of the Bahamian Minister of Foreign Affairs has confirmed Sidney’s death to TMZ … however, the circumstances surrounding his passing are not yet known, nor do we know where he died.

As you all know, Mr. Poitier was one of the most prolific actors of his era. Throughout his career, he’d challenged and broken racial barriers in Hollywood. He’s also graced the screen in some of the most iconic Black ’70s films including, “Uptown Saturday Night,” “A Piece Of The Action,” and “Let’s Do It Again.”

The Bahamian-born actor also made great impacts in the acting game, by ultimately becoming the first Black actor to win an Oscar for Best Actor in 1963 for his lead role in “Lilies of the Field.”

And of course we can’t forget about his iconic roles as Detective Virgil Tibbs in “In the Heat of the Night,” when he spoke his infamous line, “They call me Mr. Tibbs”; and also as Mark Thackeray in “To Sir With Love.”

Then there was the ever-so-controversial film (for that era), “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” where Poitier starred as the lead love interest to his White co-star as an interracial couple. Every last one of those three films were released in the same year – 1967.

In addition to his accomplishments in acting, Sidney Poitier was a fighter for the struggle against oppression of Black people. He dedicated himself to the civil rights fight, and was eventually awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 by President Barack Obama for his efforts. Poitier maintained dual citizenship within the U.S. and the Bahamas, and served as Bahamian Ambassador to Japan from 1997-2007.

Mr. Poitier was sadly preceded in death by his daughter, Gina Patrice Poitier-Gourage (whom he shared with is ex-wife, Juanita Hardy), who passed away in 2018. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joana Shimkus, and six daughters. After an impactful journey here on earth, may Sidney Poitier rest in power, peace, and serenity.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, most of our favorite icons aren’t perfect, they’re simply perfectly flawed human beings, just like the rest of us. Diahann Carroll and Sidney Poitier are examples of that, although we still give them nothing but the utmost respect for all that they’ve done to contribute to the film and the TV industry throughout their decades in entertainment.

With that said, let’s dig into this 9-YEAR love affair between Poitier and Carroll, that the late iconic actress publicly spoke about in her 2019 autobiographical book, “The Legs Are The Last To Go.” Apparently, there were plenty of mistakes and painful moments from both parties during the time they were seeing one another without the knowledge of their spouses…

According Diahann Carroll, Sidney Poitier convinced her to divorce her then-husband, Monte Kay, and led her to believe he would soon leave his then-wife, Juanita Hardy, for her. Carroll apparently held up her end of their reported agreement by divorcing her husband. However, she says Poitier reneged on his alleged promise, choosing to instead remain married to his wife. As a result, Carroll refused to sit around waiting on Poitier to move forward with his divorce, so she began dating another man at that time…and that pissed Poitier all the way of, according to Carroll. Here’s what she said happened next:

Via Entertainment Rundown: “Sidney called me at my hotel . . . ‘You b*tch, whore, tramp,’ he yelled. ‘I know he just left your bed. I won’t have you running around with other men. You belong to me!’” the New York Post quoted her as writing in the book.

She wrote that Poitier later told her he’d finally left his wife, Juanita Hardy. He even bought Carroll a ring and made her decorate a 10-room Riverside Drive apartment he’d bought.

“I was only home a few days when he called to say his wife was having second thoughts. Our wedding plans would have to be postponed,” wrote Carroll.

She added: “When the apartment was ready and I was about to move my daughter in with me, Sidney told me he didn’t want her there . . . He changed the locks so I couldn’t get in. Then he made me write him a check to offset his purchase and decorating costs. I did as I was told, submissive and desperate.”

Despite her decision to detail their affair, Carroll says Poitier, who did not comment on the book, continues to be her friend.

“Sidney and I are now friends. That’s a lovely thing that comes as you age – forgiveness and perhaps a relaxing of standards,” wrote Carroll.

Poitier went on to marry actress Joanna Shimkus, while Carroll married three more times, her last husband was singer Vic Damone.

Diahann Carroll and Sidney Poitier were treading in dangerous waters back in the day, but every now n’ then, we all have to fall into ditches  and figure out how to climb out on our own. Sometimes people stay married for convenience, financial reasons, their children, etc., but end up having affairs to fulfill their desires. When acting legend, Sidney Poitier, married his now ex-wife, Juanita Hardy, in 1950, they would have never imagined that 50+ years later, they’d have to lay one of their beautiful children to rest. To say that is just not the natural order of life, is an understatement, it is the greatest pain that no parent should ever have to face. Unfortunately last year, in mid-2018, it is a pain that Sidney and Juanita came to know firsthand, when they lost their beloved daughter, Gina.

As they continue to adjust to their ‘new normal,’ the Oscar winning actor has had to face a ‘new first’ this year. As we previously reported, he celebrated his 92nd birthday in February 2019. Though that is a blessing in itself, it was the Uptown Saturday Night star’s first time celebrating his birthday without his 4th born (of 6) child, here with them in over five decades. Although he’s accomplished many great things throughout his life- being one of the most influential actors in Hollywood history, becoming the first African American to earn the ‘Best Actor’ Oscar Award in 1963, after forcing Hollywood to recognize him as superior talent through his performance in Lillies of the Fields, a social activist, and more- it’s his 90th birthday party that probably best represents what he is most proud of – his family.

Poitier’s Relatives Reveal Little Known Facts About Him

The Hollywood Reporter provided the birthday photo and also talked to a few of Poitier’s family, who revealed things about his personality, that the world never knew. For one, the 90 year old Bahamian native has the ability to crack folks up with his sense of humor. Secondly, he can cuss up a storm!

Via THR: “He’s one of the most eloquent curse-word users,” says godson Mike Jordan admiringly… […] Adds grandson Etienne Gouraige, “He knows how to make a room explode.”

It was also reported that Poitier has helped many of his family members turn their career dreams into a reality, with his generosity of putting them through school and such:

Via THR: He supported the dreams of other family members to pursue careers in the arts; after a trip with Poitier to Walt Disney Animation Studios, Gouraige made the decision to study at the Savannah College of Art and Design (along with his sister Gabrielle). Says Joanna, Poitier’s wife of more than 40 years, “He is the most wonderful, generous, kind, honest man with the most integrity that I’ve ever known in my life.”

This is a beautiful sight to see, Sidney Poitier is clearly surrounded by several generations of love and we wish him many more birthdays to come.
