Many people probably don’t know that Patti LaBelle was once engaged to a Temptations singer. They were in love, and for a while, it seemed like they would last forever, despite the demanding schedule of their careers. They kind of kept their love on the low at the time, so fans were mostly in the dark about Patti’s walk down the isle that almost happened, before coming to a screeching halt. Patti’s ex-fiance’ is none other than Otis Williams, one of the founding members of the iconic Temptations! Who woulda thought it, right?

Patti Explains Why She Called Off Their Engagement- There Was Someone Else

After Otis proposed to Patti she later admitted that she had to follow her heart and go with her gut feeling about who she should be with. Although she loved Otis, her heart was with someone else. That someone else was the man she eventually was married to for 34 years, Armstead Edwards (he and Patti are now divorced).

Patti and and Armstead were actually close platonic friends for years prior to dating, and it wasn’t until Otis popped the question to Patti that Armstead and Patti realized they were more than just good friends. See what they revealed in their prior interview with Ebony Magazine:

Via Ebony: While their friendship continued to grow, romance didn’t enter the picture until Patti told Edwards of her plans to marry. “Patti got engaged to Otis Williams of the Temptations and it hit me like a rock,” says Edwards. “It really made me realize how much she meant to me and I became very persistent. I guess you could say it was the classic story: we were miserable with each other but even more miserable without each other.”

Apparently Patti felt the same way. “After Otis gave me the engagement ring he asked me to move to L.A. I said ‘Oh no, no, no, I could never move to L.A. because all of my family is here in Philly.’ Plus I felt like Otis wanted me to slow down my singing role and I knew that was something I didn’t want to give up. He understood and we’ve always remained friends. We’re still friends to this day.”

After Patti and Otis were a wrap, she and Armstead started a committed relationship. Although Patti turned down Armstead twice when he popped the engagement question, she ultimately regretting that decision and ended up proposing to him:

Via Ebony: “Pat asked if she could talk to me and we walked down to the drugstore, then came back to my apartment where we spent hours just talking. That night she proposed. That was a Friday and we eloped the following Wednesday, [said Armstead].”

“It’s true,” says Patti. “I begged him because I realized if he got away I’d be in trouble. I was scared of marrying him, but I was more scared of losing him. He made me sweat it out for two days before accepting and I never let him forget it.”

Much respect to Patti for being strong enough to follow her heart; and respect to Otis Williams for keeping it cordial with Patti after breaking off their engagement. Like we mentioned earlier, Patti and her ex-husband, Armstead divorced after 34 years together, they have 3 children together (2 adopted sons and one biological son), and from what we hear, they too, are still very close friends. Kenneth Williams – son of the late Temptations singer, Paul Williams – went to prison in 1989 for reportedly murdering his great-aunt in cold blood. He ended up serving almost 22 years in the pen’…but when his feet hit the pavement again, he was in for the surprise of his life.

Williams’ Son On The Murder Of His Great-Aunt And How Dad’s Suicide Affected Him

After a neighbor found his aunt’s body, Kenneth Williams had plenty of time to reflect on his actions while in prison:

Via The Detroit News- On July 18, 1989, [Kenneth Williams] killed his 81-year-old great-aunt Mary Bryant inside her bungalow on Detroit’s northwest side. She was shot in the head and strangled with a telephone cord, which a neighbor found wrapped three times around the woman’s throat, according to a published report.

Kenneth Williams was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison.

“I was out of my mind on crack cocaine,” Williams said. “I was out of control. Prison basically saved my life.”

As a kid, Kenneth was always on the road with his Pops and the Temptations. “Where the show went, I went,” he said. But after his Dad committed suicide when Kenneth was 11 years old, it affected him in many ways:

The outgoing youngster [Kenneth Williams] turned angry, rebellious and “was put out of every school in Detroit. I was lost,” he said. “I lost my best friend.”

At 19, he smoked his first joint. At 25, he tried cocaine. At 27, “that —- took me to another place,” he says.
That’s how old he was when he strangled his great-aunt. He turned 28 just before heading to prison.

“I was trying to deal with why I was in prison and what made me go there,” he said. “The money? I wasn’t even thinking about it.”

The Legal Battle

According to The Detroit News, before he began serving his murder sentence, he’d asked his sister, Paula Williams (Paul Williams’ daughter), to save his portion of their Dad’s yearly Motown royalty checks until he gets out of prison. However, when he was released from prison in July 2011, “I thought I was well off,” Kenneth told The Detroit News.  Turns out, he was more like well out…of money that is. He was reportedly supposed to have around $200,000.00 waiting for him, but claims his sister spent it:

[Kenneth Williams] sister, Paula Williams, spent it [his $200,000.00], according to a complaint he filed against her in federal court in Detroit.

He soon learned his cash was gone and confronted his sister, who admitted spending the money, he alleges in a court filing.“She thought he was never going to get out of prison,” his lawyer Kenneth Burger wrote in a lawsuit.

Paul Williams Jr. [Paul Williams’ other son], told The Detroit News he hasn’t received his full share of royalties in years from Paula. “She’s doing it to all of us,” Paul Jr. of Sterling Heights said. “She did right by us for 10 years, but she’s been slipping since then. It’s greed.”

[Paul] Williams’ heirs split about $80,000 a year in Motown royalties based on sales of the group’s music, Paul Williams’ likeness and other rights. The royalties were paid out twice a year.

The royalties are supposedly split between Paul Williams’ widow and seven children from various relationships.

As for his relationship with his sister:

“I’m still there for her if she needs me,” Williams said. “But I don’t trust people after what I’ve been through. We live in a wicked world.”

Should Paul Williams’ Son, Have Received His Inheritance?

The law is the law. So, of course Kenneth’s sister shouldn’t have allegedly spent his inheritance. On the flip side, sometimes certain folks just need to be grateful for getting a second shot at life.

Not sure what the outcome of this situation was. But did Kenneth actually deserve to walk out of prison and be handed a silver platter after murdering his great-aunt? I say no, he deserved to work from the very bottom back up to the top to redeem himself. But hey, that’s just my humble opinion. Anyways, if he did ever get his money, he probably should have donate a chunk of it to a drug rehab facility, or PTSD treatment center to help prevent someone else from making the same mistake he did.

ILOSM family remember actress Golden Brooks,who played “Maya” of the hit early 2000’s sitcom, Girlfriends? Her role was as the sassy friend to the characters played by Tracee Ellis Ross (Diane’s daughter), Jill Marie Jones, and Persia White.

On the show, “Maya” was a married housewife and author, but in real life, Golden was dating a known actor at the time. Although the two are no longer together, they did produced what they are most proud of and treasure with all their hearts- their precious, now 12-year-old daughter.

So who’s her baby daddy, you ask? He’s none other than actor, D.B. Woodside. Remember him? Most of us, Old Schoolers, first became familiar with D.B. when he portrayed Temptations base singer, Melvin Franklin, in the classic Temptations biopic miniseries.

Ever since then, we’ve seen D.B. do his thing in many TV shows and films, including the VH1 series, Single Ladies; the Fox drama series, 24, and he’s currently starring on the Fox hit series, Lucifer.

Well little did many of D.B.’s and Golden’s fans know, they were a couple back in the day, but kept their relationship on the low and out of the public’s eye for the most part.

Mr. Edwards died at the age of 74 years old in a Chicago hospital after spending over 30 years of his life living in the St. Louis area. According to his daughter, Denise Edwards, the couple relocated to Chicago to seek better medical care for her father. There is no word on why the investigation into Mr. Edwards’ welfare was opened, but as reported by The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Mrs. Edwards denies any wrongdoing.

“I loved Dennis, and we were married for 18 years,” Mrs. Edwards said. “I would have never done anything to harm him. These allegations are false and defamatory and will be proven as such. Until this is all over, I have no further comment.”

According to Mrs. Edwards, her husband was suffering from complications of meningitis which was ultimately his cause of death. But the investigator accused her of holding his head face down on the bed in an attempt to stop his breathing.

Mrs. Edwards was also said to have taken the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame singer’s hearing aids from him. The investigator believed Mr. Edwards to be incapable of advocating for himself. It was reported that he was “bed bound and immobile,” so the department took steps to remove from their Chicago residence.

Less than a week after the investigator reported on Mr. Edwards’ condition, an emergency protective order was filed against his wife. Mrs. Edwards was set to appear in court to contest the Jan. 18 order on Friday, Feb. 2, but her husband died the day before and the hearing was cancelled.

The Chicago Police Department has opened a criminal investigation into the allegations against Mrs. Edwards. But the family is focusing on plans for a memorial service in Mr. Edwards’ honor. He died just two days before his 75th birthday and has been survived by five daughters and one son.

In May of 2017, Siedah Garrett took to Instagram to ask for prayers for Dennis Edwards when he was reportedly very sick. At that time, close friend of Edwards and photo journalist, Ken Bedford, shared that Edwards was admitted to a St. Louis hospital after returning from a concert date in Canada. Bedford also later took to Facebook to share that Edwards had been recovering in a rehab facility in Chicago after he suffered an aneurism. Edwards’ friend also stated that he had been making great progress and his wife, Brenda, was planning a party for his birthday. Tragically, he passed away 2 days before he would have been 75. The St. Louis Dispatch  reported that Edwards passed away due to complications from meningitis.

Otis Williams, original Temptations member, shared that while Dennis Edwards is no longer living his legacy lives on through his music. “Don’t Look Any Further” was one of Edward’s biggest hits as a solo artist.

After learning of his passing, Siedah Garrett took to Instagram to remember Edwards as a legend. She thanked Edwards for giving her a shot and called him a “beautiful soul”.

Prayers are needed for singer Dennis Edwards of the Temptations. He was admitted to a St Louis hospital after returning from a concert date in Canada last week. He is seriously ill and I won’t say any more until until his wife releases details. As for now until further information is released please join me in praying for his recovery. Upcoming dates included the OJays in a couple of weeks. I have known Dennis for many years and he along with Chris Arnold also of the Temptations, who lives in Chicago, have been major supporters of my Breast cancer awareness program by performing ‘live’.

Dennis is the brotha who stepped in as lead singer for the Temps in 1968, as a replacement for the legendary David Ruffin, who was fired from the position. Edwards always has had that distinctive rugged texture to his vocals and went on to have solo success in the 80s, with his most popular hit being the duet with Siedah Garret titled, “Don’t Look Any Further.”

Update: The illness which caused Edwards to be hospitalized has not been disclosed at this time. However, it’s now being reported that the family has stated he’s slowly beginning to recover and we hope he continues to make progress. We’ll keep y’all posted on this and in the meantime we’ll send positive energy to Dennis Edwards and his family.
