Legendary singer, Tina Turner, opened up in her new book about the struggles that she has endured. In her book, Ms. Tina Turner shared how she contemplated suicide before her husband saved her life.

Tina Turner Considered Suicide & Suffered A Stroke

Tina Turner is known for such hits that include “Proud Mary” and “What’s Love Got to do With It?” – just as well as she is known for her abusive, public marriage with the late, Ike Tuner. Tina divorced Ike in 1976 and remarried German music executive, Erwin Bach, in 2013. Before tying the knot, the couple dated for 27 long years.

According to PEOPLE magazine,  in the early ’90s, Tina and Bach shared a home in Cologne, Germany, before his job required a move to Switzerland. Currently, Turner and Bach live in Switzerland as a happily married couple. Like most marriages, they’ve had their share of challenges.

Just three weeks after they married,  Turner suffered a stroke. Not realizing the severity of the stroke, she soon discovered that she was not able to walk as well as she was unable to dance. She was at a doctor’s office when she learned the cold, harsh truth:

“That’s when I discovered I couldn’t stand on my own,” Turner recalled to PEOPLE. “I was too embarrassed to call for help. Legs for days and muscles of steel from dancing, but I didn’t have the strength to get up. Terrified, I dragged myself over to a sofa, all the while thinking that I couldn’t imagine Tina Turner paralyzed. I doubted that I would ever be able to wear high heels again, let alone dance in them.”

Bach remained by Tina’s side. Soon, they learned that her challenges with her health were not over.

After Learning To Walk Again, Tina Turner Was Diagnosed With Intestinal Cancer:

With hard work and dedication, Turner was able to walk again. However, she was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. While Turner was afraid that she would’t make it, her husband, Bach, continued to encourage her:

“Erwin always radiated confidence, optimism and joie de vivre, “ Turner said. “With his help, I tried to keep calm.”

Because Turner opted  for homeopathic treatments, instead of traditional treatments,  her kidneys were just 20% of their normal function. With the chances extremely low of receiving a kidney, Tina was urged to start dialysis, but she said she didn’t want to live on a machine:

“The consequences of my ignorance ended up being a matter of life and death,” Turner wrote in her book, ‘My Love Story.’ “At this terrible moment of guilt and self-recrimination, I learned something wonderful about Erwin. He never reproached me for my mistake. Instead, he was loyal, kind and understanding — and determined to help me get through all this alive.”

As Turner contemplated death, Bach surprised her with the ultimate gift:

“It wasn’t my idea of life. But the toxins in my body had started taking over. I couldn’t eat. I was surviving, but not living. I began to think about death. If my kidneys were going, and it was time for me to die, I could accept that. It was OK. When it’s time, it’s really time. I didn’t mind the thought of dying, but I was concerned about how I would go.”

Tina Turner Revealed How Her Husband Gave Her A Kidney For Transplant:

To her shock, Turner’s husband, Erwin Bach, gave her one of his kidneys. Because of Bach’s generosity, in her book, Turner is encouraging people to sign up to donate organs in order to save lives. By Bach giving Turner the ultimate gift, it solidified their love and quieted the rumors that he married Turner for her wealth.

“I wondered if anyone would think that Erwin’s living donation was transactional in some way,” Turner said. “Incredibly, considering how long we had been together, there were still people who wanted to believe that Erwin married me for my money and fame. What else would a younger man want with an older woman? Erwin always ignored the rumors.”

What a beautiful love story!
