Tisha &Duane Martin Respond To Bankruptcy Fraud Claim & Reveal How Bad Their Friction Really Is

Posted On : March 23, 2018

Actors, Tisha Campbell and Duane Martin, have been through a rough patch lately. Not only are they divorcing after 20 wonderful years, but as we previously reported, the trustee in their divorce filing legal claims they committed bankruptcy fraud. The Martins are accused of intentionally hiding $50,000 during their prior bankruptcy filing, in order to pocket the money for themselves, instead of properly paying their dues. Now, for the first time, Duane and Tisha have both responded with explanations and in doing so, they’ve also revealed just how tense things between them actually are.

Duane Martin Explains

Based on court docs, it appears that the bankruptcy fraud situation was all Duane’s fault and he’s manning up it.

Via TheBlast: According to documents obtained by The Blast, Duane Martin is pleading with the court to not sanction him and his estranged wife after the trustee in their divorce claimed they hid $50,000 in acting residuals. The crux of the argument is over a $125,000 payment that was made late to the Trustee, and an alleged misunderstanding over which residuals the Trustee is entitled to given that the Martins thought they were buying back their rights.

In his declaration, Duane admits he “Had problems determining what amounts might be owed to the estate” when he delivered a check for Tisha’s residuals. He says the blunder falls squarely on his shoulders: “Prior to our separation, I handled the family finances and business finances by myself. I recognized then that I was not capable of preparing an accounting by myself.”

Duane Martin then revealed that things are apparently so bad between him and Tisha, that communication between them is and/or was pretty much nonexistent and that when they do talk, they beef:

Duane says, “We were having difficulty communicating with each other and agreeing about major and minor issues, including who to retain to prepare the accounting requested by the Trustee.”

Tisha Blames Duane

Tisha also responded in court docs, pointing the finger at Duane for their $50K bankruptcy disaster and wants no parts of his mess:

In her own declaration, Tisha agreed with her estranged husband and said she had relied on Duane to facilitate the delivery of her residuals to the Trustee, and when she found out he may have messed up, she immediately had her lawyers investigate the situation. Tisha says that since splitting up with Duane she “Wanted to take charge of my own finances,” and is hoping the court does not sanction her because of the oversight.

What’s The Straw That Broke The Camel’s Back?

It’s not really clear what finally made the Martins file for divorce, but here’s what one source revealed to People:

Via People– “I know that it’s been coming. It’s not anything that’s new,” the source said. “It’s been getting harder and harder for them for the last two years. But it just got to the breaking point recently. It’s one of those things where they’ve been talking about it and fighting it out and trying to come to a conscious uncoupling.”

“What’s the straw that broke the camel’s back, I don’t know, but I know that with their kid and schedules and money issues, it all played into it,” the source added, mentioning son Xen’s autism diagnosis. “They’ve been through a lot of different stress tests. Sometimes couples just fall out of love.”

United Front

Following their recent divorce announcement, Tisha and Duane showed love to one another on social media, stating that they were a “united front.” However, after reading their latest tension filled revelations in their bankruptcy fraud dispute, “front” may be the precise description of what they’re putting on for the public. From the sounds of it, they seem to be workin’ on each other’s last nerves behind closed doors. I wish they were still together, but gotta state the obvious, just sayin.’

At any rate, the “united front” they’re referenced, was their support of each other’s upcoming projects. Duane will be starring opposite Gabrielle Union, in NBC’s upcoming “Bad Boy” spin-off series. Tisha Campbell is starring in ABC’s new drama pilot, “Untitled Holmes, produced by actress, Regina King, and “Good Morning” America news anchor, Robin Roberts. We can’t WAIT to see both of those series and it’s wonderful that things are lookin’ up for the former lovebirds, even if their “front” ain’t so “united.”
