Remember ‘Rachel’ from School Daze? Yeah, we figured most of y’all probably would. She was the sexy girlfriend of ‘Dap’ and represented for the “Gigaboos” in the film. And like most films, there are memorable inside stories that most fans don’t know anything about until years after the movie’s release. Although the actress, Kyme, managed to snag the role of ‘Rachel,’ you won’t believe which actress had the role of ‘Rachel’ first. The story behind this one is surprising and interesting to say the least , so here it is…

Actress, Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, was initially hired to play the role of ‘Rachel.’ You may not know her name, but we, old Schoolers definitely know her face. Phyllis is  best known for her roles in 90’s cult classics, like What’s Love Got To Do With It, New Jack City, Jungle Fever, The Inkwell and How Stella Got Her Grove Back, and The Women of Brewster’s Place, to name a few.

Why Didn’t She Keep The Role Of ‘Rachel?’

Apparently, Spike Lee had chosen Phyllis for the “Rachel’ role and pre-production had already began. However, somewhere toward the beginning of pre-production, Phyllis ended up being replaced by Kyme due to artistic differences she and Spike had about the direction of the ‘Rachel’ character. Based on the mega-success of School Daze, it’s probably safe to say the film would have also served as another big notch under her belt. But no sense in crying over spoiled milk, like my Momma used to say…moving on…
