Controversial talk show host, Wendy Williams, has always had a love-her-or-hate-her personality. That’s because of her brutally honest opinions about others and her oftentimes hella shady shade against celebs and such. There’s one thing no one can deny though – when it comes to also diggin’ out the most serious skeletons from her own closet – she does not make herself an exception to the rule.

Just like always, she kept it real recently, when she shared details about her past drug addiction. This comes just months after she’d also revealed that her 17 year-old son is a recovered addict.

‘I Was A Functioning Addict, But Here’s Why I Never Was Fired’

In a recent interview with Page Six, Wendy chopped it up about her 10-year long cocaine addiction. She discussed how her addction came outta nowhere, because she wasn’t raised that way:

“I never got busted by the cops,” said Wendy. “Honestly, I was high careening around Manhattan and New Jersey high. I come from a two-parent household … I come from a good family and I had never shamed them, and plus I earned my career.”

At the time of her addiction, Wendy was working as a popular NY radio personality. That further enticed her to not seek help, because she thought someone might put her on blast in the media. So she took another route to make her addiction a done dada:

“Look, I was very popular at the time I decided to stop. If I were to be busted that would’ve definitely been New York Post front cover,” she continued. “I just woke up one day and I said, ‘Girl, you need to stop before it really goes down.’”

In a prior interview with Black America Web, Wendy admitted that she was a “functioning addict” during her cocaine binging days and that also enticed the radio station not to fire her. According to Wendy, when it came to her radio show’s co-workers and staff, everybody and their mommas knew she was getting coked up on the regular. However, she was still able to hold on to her job:

“I was a functioning addict though,” said Wendy. “I report to work on time, and I’d walk in and all my co-workers, including my bosses, would know, but since I would have my headphones on and walk in the studio and [they] wouldn’t fire me because I was making ratings. A functioning addict has several alarm clocks, you’re organized,” she continued. “It’s a miracle I was able to stop.”

Wendy Discloses Her Teen Son’s Prior Drug Addiction

What’s also a miracle, is that Wendy’s 17 year old son, Kevin Jr., she shares with husband, Kevin Hunter Sr., was able to stop his own drug habit as well:

“Our son, three years ago, he’s 17 now, he just graduated from high school, he’s leaving for college in September, but three years ago he smoked K2,” Williams revealed to Entertainment Tonight. “Now this is a drug, we see it on the news, people are walking around like zombies.”

“I was horrified. My son became someone I didn’t even know … Immediately, immediately. It zaps your brain immediately. … Drugs have no income; drugs have no race or religion. Drugs are drugs and that K2 was really something else and you know I’m glad to say we were able to bring him back all the way around.”

It’s A New Day

These days, Wendy is grateful to be drug-free and thankful for her son’s recovery as well. She and her husband have now launched their philanthropic campaign called, “Be Here,” which will serve to fight against drug and substance abuse. Also, this year (2018) her TV talk show will reach a new milestone:

“I lost a little over 10 years of my life regarding substance abuse, but I’m now going into Season 10 [of ‘The Wendy Williams Show’]. I’m married, I have a great career and a flourishing business … it’s not that you fall down, it’s how you rise. And if you rise, then you reach back. This is a reach back.”

Well said Wendy.

About I Love Old School Music

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
