Cheryl on how she ended up being on a mostly African American TV show:

Cheryl: I went to a predominantly black high school, Dorsey High School in Los Angeles. A lot of my friends in school were on Soul Train, such as Jeffrey Daniels and Jody Watley, so I was brought onto the show as a dare. It was like, “let’s see what the reaction will be when she comes onto the show.”

On the racism she experienced on set:
ST: Being that you were the only Chinese dancer, how were you received by the other dancers when you first came on the show?

Cheryl: The first time was scary. A lot of the Black dancers did not like the idea that a non-black person was dancing on the show. I remember I was placed on the risers and some of the dancers were jealous and I…
