These days, Lauryn Hill just can’t catch a break. She’s been making all sorts of headlines for all the wrong reasons, other than that beautiful voice and lyrical talent she possesses. Countless pissed off fans, annoyed former musical collaborators of Ms. Hill’s and fellow singers have joined the ‘I-don’t-give-a-damn-about-Lauryn-Hill’s-talent’ list. Why? Because she’s managed to burn quite a few bridges and now, the former Fugees star has burned another with American Express.

Why American Express Is Suing Lauryn Hill

It’s just been reported, by Bossip, that Hill is getting sued by the credit card company for owing damn near $400,000.00 in unpaid bills:

Via Bossip- Lauryn Hill allegedly ran up a six-figure credit card tab before skipping out on the bill. That’s according to a new lawsuit from American Express against the “If I Ruled The World” singer, which accuses her of failing to pay the massive bill totaling $371,892.39.

American Express National Bank said the Fugees artist racked up the bill for “the price of goods sold and/or services rendered,” but then balked at paying, according to court papers filed earlier this month in New Jersey Superior Court, and obtained by BOSSIP. Also named as a co-defendant in the suit is Hill’s company, “MLH Touring.”

It was also reported that American Express made several attempts to get their money from Hill, but that she “often refused” to pay them one red cent. Thus, they reportedly had no choice but to take their fight to court on September 28, 2018.

Why Hill Is Suing Her Cousin

American Express isn’t the only entity out here filing court docs. So is Lauryn Hill, herself. Only difference is, her legal war is within her own family. Y’all know how it is- sometimes family, money and business just do NOT mix. That’s a lesson Lauryn apparently had to learn the hard way. If you missed our previous report, here it is…

It’s one thing to spot your relative a few bucks when they’re running late on their cell phone bill, or something of equal or lesser value. However, it’s a whole OTHER thing, when your relative needs a few thousand…as in $65,000.00 to be exact. That’s how much money Lauryn Hill reportedly loaned her cousin, Gerald Hill, and according to reports, she hasn’t gotten one hot nickel of it back yet.

According to her June 2018 lawsuit, Lauryn sued her cousin, Gerald Hill, for breach of contract. Apparently she loaned him $65,000.00 and included a clause in their contract that gave Gerald three months to pay the loan back in full, interest-free. However, if he went past the 3-month term, he’d have to pay her interest. The legal doc’ also stated that if Gerald defaulted on the loan, his cuz’ could force him to not only pay back the loan in full, plus interest, but also any legal fees she’ll acquire from suing him over it.

In addition to the aforementioned contract terms, Hill’s lawsuit also stated that she’s now convinced her cousin hoodwinked and bamboozled her for the money, but never had any intentions on repaying his debt to her. It also states that she demanded the loan repayment from her cuz’ on several occasions, but to no avail. Thus, she had no choice, but to take Gerald Hill to court to force him to pay up.

It’s been alleged that Gerald needed the $65K at the time, to save his Maplewood, NJ home from foreclosure.

We said it before and we’ll say it again- Another day, another un-welcomed problem for Lauryn Hill. Guess they won’t be having a happy Hill family reunion no time soon.

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
