“.Seuss” Kids’ Books Author Gets Exposed After Offensive Cartoons Resurface
Author, Jones, revealed that the “Dr. Seuss” cartoonist and author proudly flaunted his racist hat in his earlier work.
According to Jones, when Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel was hired by one of the four largest ad agencies to date -McCann Erickson advertising firm- Seuss depicted Black people as lazy “ni&&ers.” In what was one of McCann Erickson firm’s most successful campaigns at that time, the “Grinch” author created a cartoon ad for the insecticide brand, Flit, which portrayed an African American wife trying to talk her husband up off the couch to go out and get a job:
Via Daily Mail– One 1929 Flit cartoon showed a Black husband leaning back in his chair and smoking a pipe while his wife does laundry and complains about him not being able to find a job. She tells him: ‘Say, n*****, when you all hold a job a week mosquitoes will brush their teeth with Flit and like it’.
To make matters worse, when Seuss worked for the then popular publication, “Judge,” he created a full page cartoon (above) titled, “Cross Section of the World’s Most Prosperous Department Store,” where he listed cliches about items that can be sold at a department store. In it, he depicted African Americans in blackface with red lips, patiently waiting to be sold off as slaves, with these words scrolled across the illustration:
“Take home a high grade ni***r for your woodpile. Satisfaction guaranteed! -Dr. Seuss”
