Jackee’ sat down with Essence recently to discuss her latest role in the updated all black version of Pride and Prejudice for Lifetime. While discussing the role she spoke about her time on 227 and revealed that it took her years to accept Sandra’s place within the culture.

“I used to hate myself; the fact that I was just doing a part. I didn’t know it would last this long,” Harry told ESSENCE of the series, which ran for five seasons. “After it was over, I thought it would be gone.”

“The goal is to be a working actress, not to go to Hollywood,” Harry continued. “I had down-to-earth dreams, not [dreams of] being a character. I don’t want to get too deep about it because I’ve come to grips with it. But I was sad for a good five years straight.”

Jackee’ admits that it was fellow award-winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson who made her realize how important the role was and why she should never be ashamed of it. That conversation gave Jackee’ the strength to keep moving on, ultimately landing a gig Lisa Landry on the equally classic sitcom Sister, Sister.

And as far as her career now, Jackee’ shows no signs of slowing up anytime soon.

“I just think that we’ve got to do our best. I believe we’ve got to be like Jackie Robinson. The late, great Jackie Robinson. We gotta play First base, Second base, Third base, Outfield, Infield, Catcher..and we have to do it what? Number 1.”
