According to CBS, 28-year-old Cheslie Kryst won Miss USA, and 18-year-old Kaliegh Garris won Miss Teen USA. Reportedly, they joined the ranks of 25-year-old Nia Franklin. She was crowned 2019 Miss America, in September 2018.

The three wins have become a powerful symbol of how much American views on beauty have evolved from a past marred by racism and gender stereotypes,” Post News Group mentions in its report, “even as Black women leaders are still severely underrepresented in other fields, like corporate America or in Congress.

According to the source, Nia Franklin stated that it’s important to “little Brown and Black girls to see three strong figures, three strong women, African-American women that are doing so much great work.”

“People will argue that race doesn’t matter. But race does matter in America, because of the history, because of slavery.”

Even Senator Kamala Harris caught wind of the trio of winners, and she decided to give them a shout out via Twitter.

“Nia, Cheslie, and Kaliegh: you are trailblazers, creating your own path on your own terms.”

And actually, another Black woman was just crowned 2019 Miss International Queen. Her name is Jazelle Barbie Royale, and she’s from the U.S. as well.

What are your thoughts about the winners? If you have any comments, feel free to share them via our Facebook page.

About I Love Old School Music

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
