Steve Harvey did a very touching and candid interview with with People Magazine a few years ago. He detailed many things about his struggle during the days when he was homeless years, that a lot of his fans never knew. After reading what he said, it’s clear to see that Harvey has been on one incredible journey and we salute him for sharing some of his lowest moments with the public. His story is truly inspiring.

Here’s what Steve Harvey told People Magazine about the three years he was homeless:

STEVE HARVEY ON HOW HE ALMOST GAVE UP

“That was an ugly period, just very painful. Everybody has a moment when they turn back, when you say to yourself, ‘This is too much.’ I had it on several occasions.”

For three years straight, Steve had to live in his car, steal gasoline to get to his next comedy gig, and check out what he said was one of the MOST shameful experiences during this time.

Steve Harvey also spoke on how he would spend his nights sleeping in his car and during the day he had to wash up in public sinks. He recalled one particular occasion where he had to hide in a bathroom stall at a hotel for hours before he could sneak back out to wash the soap off of his body.

“I sat down and started crying, but a voice said, ‘If you keep going, I’m going to take you places you’ve never been.’ It was like God said, ‘Don’t quit, you’re almost there,’ Steve recalled.

His twin daughters had issues with his absence though.

STEVE’S TWIN DAUGHTERS FORGIVE HIM

While Steve was trying his hardest to pursue his dream of becoming a successful comedian, he left his eldest daughters – v year old twins, Karli and Brandi Harvey – when they were kids, to live on the road and do gigs instead. Steve how his daughters have now forgiven him:

“Years later they [his daughters] said to me, ‘Dad, we didn’t understand why you left us, but we know now you had to go. You didn’t just belong to us. You belonged to the world.'” That was emotional for me.

HOW HIS CAREER DREAM KILLED HIS FIRST MARRIAGE

Steve is happily married to his current wife, Marjorie, now. But Steve has been married twice before. He explained in his People interview that what killed his marriage back then was when he quit his job as a sales insurance salesmen in his late twenties to pursue his dream of becoming a comedian. The demands of being a struggling comedian who had to travel all the time just to get a gig that pays him very little money, and the realities of still having a family to provide for, ultimately led to Steve living in his car. He would send the most of little money he did make home to his wife and kids…

WHY HE NEVER THOUGHT HE’D NOW BE WORTH $100 MILLION

“It kills me when I hear very successful people say, ‘I always knew I would get here.’ I didn’t. I always hoped I would get somewhere, but this is above and beyond. My imagination didn’t even go this big,” Harvey told People.

Now that Steve Harvey has seen major success as a now-former TV talk show host; a radio host; as “Family Feud’s” game show host; and as an author of his “Think Like A Man, Act Like Lady” book, he still feels the need to grind even harder. He said he never wants to be homeless again.

About I Love Old School Music

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
