ILOSM family, we’ve located one of the most reclusive singers of the ’80s era- former Vanity 6 member, Susan Moonsie. Some of you may not know her by name, but if know ’80s R&B, you definitely know her face. Susan was known as the ‘innocent one’ in Prince’s girl group, which also included the late Denise “Vanity” Matthews and Brenda Bennett.  It’s been decades since we’ve last seen Susan, and after laying our eyes on her most recent public photos, we were pleasantly pleased, but not surprised, at the beautiful woman she still is today.

Susan Moonsie is now  years young. She pretty much likes to stay out of the spotlight of the entertainment world and never does interviews, so we don’t have much current info on her, but we do have a few interesting, little known fun facts about her. Check her out below…

Millions of men were crushin’ on Susan Moonsie back in the day, but little did we know, she had eyes for only one man at that time- the late, great Prince! Susan and Prince were high school sweethearts and were still dating at the height of Vanity 6’s career. Word on the Old School curb is that they eventually broke up because Susan allegedly found out about other women in Prince’s life. PRINCE WANTED SUSAN MOONSIE TO BE LEAD SINGER?

Word on the Old School curb is that when Prince first formulated Vanity 6, he initially wanted his then girlfriend, Susan Moonsie, to be the lead singer, but she was too shy and didn’t want to be the lead, so they went with the late, Denise Matthews (Vanity) instead and everybody was happy.

A FEUD WITH PRINCE REPORTEDLY SPARKED LEAD SINGER SWAP-OUT

Remember when Vanity 6 first came out, then once “Purple Rain” released, the group swapped lead singers and was renamed Apollonia 6? Well, that was allegedly because Prince and his then-girlfriend/lead singer, Denise “Vanity” Matthews, had an apparent falling out. As a result, Vanity decided to back away from the group just before “Purple Rain” filming began, so Prince hired Apollonia to fill in and they even released an Apollonia 6 album in 1984. Susan Moonsie has aged like fine wine and so have her former Apollonia 6 members- Brenda Bennett and Apollonia Kotero. It’s beautiful thing to see that they still keep in touch to this day. We salute their late former group member, Vanity, and Prince- the man who was responsible for changing their lives and allowing them to live out there dream.

Apollonia shared details about her first date with Prince and their ride through Minneapolis in his purple limousine. “He picks me up, and we go for a long drive in his purple limo,” she says. “We had a date that evening, and we danced up a storm, had a great time.”

Almost immediately after the release of Purple Rain, the media began speculating about a possible romantic relationship between Prince and Apollonia due to her onscreen role. But, surprisingly, she has always insisted that they had a different type of connection. While they were “platonically, romantically involved,” they were never a couple, but their friendship has stood the test of time.

“We were platonically, romantically involved. There’s a lot of romance,” she says.

“He was not my boyfriend, but he’s my greatest friend.”

Shortly after Prince’s death, Apollonia released a heartfelt statement about the loss of her friend, thanking fans for their condolences and support. “My dear friends and family, thank you so much for your sentiments and prayers. The love you have shown for my dear friend Prince has been my support system. Your dedication to him is profound and beyond words.”

The actress/singer who replaced the late, Denise “Vanity” Matthews in the 1984 film, Purple Rain, Apollonia Kotero, spoke out this week to pay homage to her “idol,” Vanity, who sadly passed away on February 15, 2016. Prince’s Purple Rain co-star spoke with The Associated Press and expressed how much she idolized Vanity back in the day.

In case you haven’t heard, it was Prince’s protege’ and then girlfriend, Vanity, who the part Apollonia played was originally written for. There was a change of plans at the last minute during the pre-production phase of Purple Rain, after Prince and Vanity had gotten into an argument- a lover’s quarrel if you will- and Vanity walked away from the film. Prince had to quickly find a replacement, so he chose Apollonia and thus the birth of Apollonia 6, with the other two original members, Brenda and Susan, emerged.

Now here is what Apollonia said this week about Vanity, whom she eventually became friends with back in the day:
“She was an inspiration to me, just like she was to all the ladies that followed. She was a pioneer, a strong woman, she was a diva, the princess of funk…the audiences absolutely adored her.”

Apollonia said that she and Vanity had kind of lost contact over the years, but more recently had been keeping in touch through social media. She also says that she still has the magazine cover that features Prince and Vanity together because she always admired their love and their accomplishments in music: “[When I saw it], I thought, I wish I could do that someday,” she said. “I want to be like them; I want to be special like them,” Apollonia said to the AP.

After Prince and Vanity eventually broke up in 1984, Vanity did an interview with People Magazine that same year where she revealed “I needed one person to love me, and he [Prince] needed more.” Vanity and Prince later became great friends.

Prince also recently paid a touching tribute to Vanity at his concert.

It’s still almost unbelievable that Vanity has passed away so young, only 57 years old. The beautiful thing about this though, is that Denise Vanity Matthews seemed to be at peace with taking her last breathe. As we reported a few days ago, those close to her revealed that while attending church services just a few days before she passed away, she stated to the congregation that she was “ready to go home,” meaning depart from this earth. May our beloved Vanity have a wonderful, peaceful rest.
