Now that most of us, New Edition fans, have seen their BET biopic, we’re pretty familiar with the youngin’ who portrayed Ronnie DeVoe’s brother, Roland DeVoe (Ace Hunt) in the movie. He was kid in the scene who laughed hysterically at ‘young Ronnie’ (Myles Truitt) as he danced in the mirror, trying to get his moves right for his N.E.  audition. What some may not know though, is that Ronnie’s younger brother, Roland, is actually an identical twin to their other brother, Rob DeVoe. We were curious to see who Ronnie’s REAL twin brothers were, and after doing a lil’ digging on his very rarely-seen twin brothers, we finally found them.

Any R&B/hip hop fan who’s a part of the ’40 and up club’ (give or take a few years), should have a very vivid memory of one of the dopest female dance groups of the 90’s era. They are the group, Str8 Ahead, better known as the Bell, Biv, DeVoe dancers.

Remember them? The four ladies are Tee, Nikita, Pluke, and Deborah and they played a major role in BBD’s initial success back in the day, because they were like a fixture in the group’s performance and brought that street-sexy appeal to Mike Bivens,’ Ricky Bell’s, and Ronnie DeVoe’s raw edge.

Their fashion choices were on point and combined with their signature ponytails and fire dance skills, that entire recipe made them some of the most relatable ’round-the-way-girls on TV at that time. They weren’t too prissy to break a sweat, they weren’t chumps in the dance department- they could run with and/or over the best of ’em- and they damn sure weren’t the type of girls Ronnie described in “Poison,” with his line -“She’s a winner to you, but I know she’s a loser/[How do you know?] Me and the crew used to do her.”

Str8 Ahead also influenced a lot of BBD fans’ dance routines and helped us kill it at our school dances and local nightclubs! C’mon now Old Schoolers, let’s not front like some of us weren’t standing in front of our TV sets watching “Video Soul,” “The Box,” “Yo MTV Raps,” etc., and trying to mimic every move the ladies did in “Poison,” LOL. In a previous interview with A.M. Caffeine Morning Show, three of the BBD dancers- Deborah, Nikita, and Tee, revealed a lot of interesting fun facts about their time with BBD that we didn’t know.

1. They loved BET biopic, The New Edition Story and were honored that they were actually depicted in the movie, because it wasn’t a BBD movie, but an N.E. movie.

2. Str8 Ahead said they met BBD at an L.A. club, called Paradise, while competing in a dance contest Mike Bivins was judging. Ricky told them they “were forming a group called BBD and we wanna know if you can dance to the song.” The ladies admitted they knew of New Edition, but they still didn’t understand what BBD was gonna be because they’d never heard of them. Nonetheless, they were just happy to be working with the “New Edition guys” as they referred to ’em.

3. Str8 Ahead then met up with Brooke Payne (N.E.’s choreographer/manager, etc.) to show off their skills and Brooke told them they were “wack” because they got burned out too quickly. They ultimately up’d their game and made the cut.

4. The routine the ladies performed for Brooke ended up becoming the official “Poison” routine that damn near every BBD fan knows to this day…no matter how rusty many of us may be at actually doing it, LOL.

5. The dancers who were known for their fly outfits said BBD gave them the freedom to pick all of their own clothes. They also revealed that they’re style actually inspired BBD’s then unique style, which we simply know as ‘the BBD look.’

Yvette Nicole Brown took fans by storm when she starred in the popular BET biopic, The New Edition Story. For those who missed it, Yvette- best known for her roles in Community, The Office, and The New Odd Couple- portrayed Michael Bivins’ mother, Shirley Bivins; and ironically, Mike and Yvette have a history together that most never knew about…until now.

In The New Edition Story, Yvette starred alongside the other ‘N.E. mothers’: La La Anthony (Flo DeVoe), Monica Calhoun (Patricia Tresvant), Lisa Nicole Carson (Mae Bell), and Sandi McCree (Carole Brown). The women worked together to bring the motherhood dynamic to life when the cameras were rolling, but most don’t know Yvette actually has a deep past with Michael Bivins. Their work together actually started long before the biopic.

Now here’s the kicker about Mike Bivins and Yvette: Yvette Nicole Brown was actually signed to Michael’s label, Biv 10 Records, back in the day! But that’s not all, during an interview with musician, Harry Connick Jr., Yvette revealed that she was not only a singer on Biv’s label, but that Mike was her manager. Then, after she’d graduated from college, she went back to work for Bivins as his assistant. Lo and behold, ten years after Yvette was no longer Bivins’ assistant, she morphed into his momma, Shirley, for The New Edition Story. Ain’t that something?!!

Michael Bivins is proud to have accomplished many feats and withstood many New Edition trials and tribulations throughout his life. Mike Bivins New Baby & Wife 2 Weeks After Birth

Mike Bivins posted a photo of Teasha holding their baby girl, and he boasted on how beautiful they both are. Mike Biv’ Tells How He Learned From His Dad’s Mistakes

Mike is a true family man. A few years ago, we shared the message he gave, saluting fathers who are handling their business and raising their children. He also noted what he learned from the mistakes his Pops made:

“…My father was always gone working and representing the country in the Navy and my mother, Shirley, held things down at the crib. They never married. We lived in Orchard Park Projects in the city of Boston… There were a lot of single families that lived in our building. The month of June was always exciting because it meant school was almost over. Father’s Day as a holiday didn’t hold that much weight or anticipation.

When my father would visit my sister Tanya and I, we always went to Kentucky Fried Chicken on American Legion Highway and I always got a take out box and I would wait until I got back to my projects to let my friends see my bag and smell my chicken, haaaa! I was funny like that.

Gerard, my pops, didn’t…live with us. So after we chilled for a few, he would slide us some money for our pockets and then go on about his business. Still, to this day, we still chill and receive cards with money inside. We are a lot alike in our body frames, our noses and lips and our love for sports. Now I accept that I’m short because of him. It was hard at first, but I said I might be small, but I know how to ball on that basketball court. I’m the smallest in New Edition and BBD. (haaa, whateva!)

Their Past Pregnancy Updates & Announcements

Many New Edition/BBD fans recall when Ronnie (49) and his wife/Blaque singer, Shamari DeVoe (37), made their initial baby announcement back in February 2017. Fans were excited for the first time parents. Then the DeVoe’s hit us with bigger news in May, when they revealed that they were expecting not one, but TWO mini-me’s.

By June, came what Shamari called the “the best Gender Reveal Announcement Ever!” That happened when Ronnie announced, to both Shamari and the world, what gender their babies were gonna be, during a BET New Edition performance. They performed on stage in front of backdrop that was lit up in the color blue and Ronnie shouted into the mic, “Shamari rub your belly for those two boys for me baby!” Check that out below…

At that time, they hadn’t announced how far along they were in their pregnancy, but based on the photos they shared, it was pretty evident that Shamari was pretty far along in her pregnancy.

As months went by, Shamari was just as beautiful as ever and rocked her pregnant swag very well. She and Ronnie did several photo shoots to capture those precious moments for their babies to eventually see. Their fans were also enjoying the pregnancy updates that Ronnie and Shamari would regularly post on social media.

The updates suddenly came to a screeching halt after July 10th though, which was the last pregnancy photoshoot they shared online, with this caption:

Their Mysterious Silence

The DeVoe’s then went uncharacteristically radio silent on social media and fans started wondering if the babies and Shamari were okay. By July 30th, Ronnie only posted a photo of a baby’s hand, holding an adult’s finger, along with a bible verse. All the while, fans were leaving comments asking if everything there was any trouble of any kind with the babies or Shamari. They still never got a reply from Ronnie, nor Shamari.

However, about a month later, Ronnie finally resurfaced on social media and eventually confirmed that he was officially a daddy to their twin babies. He didn’t show any photos, nor give the names of their baby boys, other than referring to them as “@DeVoeTwins”…but fans were super excited just to see all of them happy.

Fast forward to now and Shamari has finally reappeared at N.E.’s Ricky Bell’s 50th birthday celebration and surprised their fans with her snap-back body. It all went down on September 27th. Here are a few of the photos:

If our guest-imations are correct, The DeVoe’s had their boys some time between July 10th and July 30th. That would mean that by the time Shamari attended Ricky’s b-day party, lookin’ like her throwback pre-baby self, at best case scenario (if she gave birth on July 10th), she was only 11 weeks post baby birth. At worst case scenario (if she delivered on July 30th) she was just 8 weeks post baby birth, when she cheesed it up for the cameras at the Sept. 27th b-day shindig.

Daaaaamn Shamari! Either her workout regimen is intense, or she’s got some MEAN bounce-back genes…or maybe it’s a little bit of both. Whatever it is, props to Shamari DeVoe, because she looks great and most importantly, we’re very happy that Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie DeVoe’s baby boys are healthy.

Most of us, New Edition fans, have always had an impression of Ricky as being one of the clean cut, laid back guys in the group. But once BET’s The New Edition Story biopic came out, Ricky sure did shock the hell outta us. While the laid back description may be true about Ricky B.’s personality, he bravely decided to reveal that his squeaky clean image was not.

That’s where his wife comes in. As we saw in the biopic, it was Amy who stood by Ricky’s side through it all- even when they went dead broke and had no sure way of making money. We also watched as Ricky revealed, in the movie, that he had a very severe cocaine addiction. His wife had to deal with his addiction as best as she could, because it got so bad that it not only affected Ricky’s career, it affected their marriage.

So to see them still together today, hitting the 13 year mark is a beautiful thing. Ricky B. has been clean and sober for years now. This is what he posted about the love of his life as they celebrated their anniversary on his birthday, September 18, 2017:

Love is in the air as Rickey Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, and Michael Bivins- the men of Bell Biv DeVoe, recently had a chance to play matchmaker before singing one of their classic love ballads.

Something To Smile About:

BBD is in concert and at their recent stop on the Three Stripes Tour, Mike Bivins helped one of their fans, Jonathan Cook, plan a proposal to his now fiancé, Sasha. Thinking that she would just enjoy the show,  Sasha had know idea that she would be apart of the show and that her life was about to change.

Bringing Sasha up on stage, in front of hundreds of screaming fans, Johnathan Cook stole the show when he proposed to his fiancé Sasha. On one knee, Johnathan asked Sasha to marry him and of course she said yes! Ricky shared the video of the proposal that had the crowd going wild and Sasha in joyful tears. After the  engagement the group serenaded the couple with a song.

Fans of classic R&B are in for a treat this year, as Bell Biv DeVoe, SWV, and En Vogue announce an upcoming “Three Stripes Tour” across the U.S. The tour is an opportunity for the group to promote their Three Stripes LP, which dropped in January. Meanwhile, SWV is promoting their Still album and En Vogue is gearing up for their own project, Electric Café. While fans are excited about new music, expect to hear classic BBD hits such as  Poison, Do Me Baby, and Smile Again. 

With the success of the New Edition movie, fans were anxiously awaiting a new release of a New Edition album along with a tour. After the BET smash hit, Johnny Gill was on “TMZ Live” and shared with TMZ that he’d just wrapped a convo with the other NE members about getting in the studio to follow up 2004’s “One Love.” He promised they have more than just an album on the way. In an interview with Music Choice, Rickey Bell explained that because some of the New Edition members weren’t ready to do a NE album, BBD decided to release their own body of work.

Rickey Bell said the following in the interview:

What made us release a Bell Biv DeVoe album as opposed to a New Edition album, especially after the movie? Our intent was to release another New Edition album along with the tour and the whole big splash campaign and all of that and just like how we formed Bell Biv DeVoe because other members wanted to do something else is the same reason why we’re releasing a BBD album and not a New Edition album at this time.
