Luther Vandross was an 8-time Grammy winner, an over 35 million records seller, a highly acclaimed singer, songwriter, producer, and arranger…and little did many know, he was also a take-no-mess kind of brotha. After his untimely passing in 2005, we’ve learned more about him in death, than we did when he was alive. In fact, his zero tolerance for BS is one of those prominent personality traits we’ve realized we LOVED about Luther.

Apparently, a fan who came at him the wrong way back in the day, learned that Luther was NOT the one to play with firsthand. Luther’s friend/gospel singer, Bebe Winans, recalled an incident when a female fan tried to play Luther on an escalator.

Here is what Bebe wrote in his book, “The Whitney I Knew”:

Luther Vandross once told me of a time when he was riding an escalator up and a lady who was headed on the down escalator recognized him. She made a big fuss when Luther didn’t stop and sign something for her, blurting out, “I’m never going to buy another one of your albums again!”

According to Bebe, that’s when Luther turned ALL the way up:

Though Luther couldn’t stop – he was on an escalator! – when he reached the top, he immediately hopped the down escalator. Upon catching up to the woman, he asked, “How many of my records do you own?” The lady quickly rattled off several titles. Luther then reached in his pocket and paid her a couple hundred dollars and said, “There, that should cover it. I never want you to buy my records again. You don’t own me!”

And BAM! Luther left that woman with a cracked face and happy pocketbook at the same damn time! It doesn’t get any more classy and real than that!

Bebe concluded with a reflection on both the life of his close friend Whitney, as well as Luther’s this point:

Sometimes we think we own those in the public eye. We buy an album and, back in the day, we’d haul it around in our Walkmans or keep it spinning on our record players. Now we can literally carry songs in our back pockets, keeping little pieces of our favorite artists with us at all times. Some people think this entitles them to a part of that celebrity’s life…I think Whitney felt all the time like Luther did that day.

The reason for that, is because it’s Bebe who revealed exactly what MJ did for Whitney for her birthday back in the day and the way he told the story had us crackin’ up.

Bebe Winans’ Details Of Whitney’s & MJ’s Monkey-Gift Fiasco

According to what Bebe wrote in his book, ‘The Whitney I Knew,” Michael surprised Whitney with a very odd gift that had everybody scratchin’ their heads. He gifted Whitney with a monkey! Nope, not a stuffed animal like you’d win at an arcade…but rather, a real-life PET MONKEY…much like the pet MJ had in Bubbles! Ain’t that a blip?!! But you MUST see what Bebe explained in detail about how the monkey gift went over with his good friend, Whitney, at that time. Bebe witnessed the whole ordeal first-hand, and what he described about that fateful encounter is hilarious…as was Whitney’s reaction to MJ’s monkey gift. It all went down when Whitney and Michael Jackson reportedly dated!

Bebe Winans: “Whitney threw an exclusive party – a BIG party,” said Bebe. It was “complete with a who’s who of attendees, loads of food, a beautifully decorated tent, and excellent music. … Cece [Winans] and I just stayed on the sidelines of the party, watching her enjoy the evening…she mingled with everyone.”

Their 2009 Domestic Violence Incident

After their divorce, their was a domestic violence incident that made headlines in 2009. Debra called the cops to her home after she said Bebe shoved her to the ground in front of their then pre-teen and teen kids: daughter, Miya, and son, Benjamin. A judge later dismissed the charges, not because the incident didn’t happen, but because Bebe and his attorney had agreed for Bebe to attend domestic violence counseling in exchange for dismissal of the charges. Needless to say, Debra was pissed and reportedly revealed this in an interview, where it was also reported that she said it wasn’t their first domestic incident:

Via BCKOnline: “First of all, dismissal doesn’t mean absence of guilt and neither does it mean he was exonerated from his actions. But this was dismissed because of the psychologist. He had two sessions, not 10, but only two sessions with him. Not 30 days, but two sessions. He said BeBe showed no domestic violence behavior. But my response to the District Attorney is neither did the man who killed all the people at Fort Hood. They did a psychology analysis on him as well and he showed no signs of domestic violence. But the proof of the matter is that he did it. BeBe is in the wrong business, he needs to be an actor because he’s good at what he does!”

Debra also reportedly spoke about the letter their daughter had written to Gayle King, detailing her account of what happened and how BeBe and his attorney fought against it:

Via Fever Magazine: “They would not let the kids speak. I sent that letter to the D.A. I told them, ‘Somebody needed to see this. The judge needs to see this.’ But BeBe’s people were pushing so hard to get this exonerated… […] I had to tell my kids because they go to school and they look at YouTube and the whole nine. But they were furious and wanted to know why their dad gets away with everything.”

Deborah Winans Stars On Oprah’s Own Network Series

Deborah Winans chose a somewhat different path from her family, by venturing into acting. Currently she’s a cast member on Oprah’s Own Network drama series, Greenleaf, where she plays ‘Charity Greenleaf- Saterlee,’ the wife of ‘Kevin Satterlee’ (played by Tye White)- a brotha who’s in the church, but confessed to her that he’s fighting with his sexuality. It’s a controversial show, because the backdrop is always set within the relationships of people within a church, but there are several risque’ factors that pepper their lives behind closed doors.

Greenleaf is in it’s second season and Deborah’s been a part of the cast since the beginning. The series also stars acting heavyweights like Lynn Whitfield, Keith David, and Oprah Winfrey, as well as retired NBA legend, Rick Fox.

After the series previously received criticism from the church community for ‘mocking the Black church,’ Deborah Winans urged everyone to watch it with an open heart first prior to pre-judging it. She also said this about her character’s situation with the husband’s bisexual attraction:

[…] “When you’re married and you have that covenant then you bring kids into the world, you have to consider all of that before you make such a big decision.”

As you can see, Deborah didn’t venture too far from the Winans family tree- her acting work still revolves around the topic of her family’s christian roots. By the way, she can sing just like her auntie and daddy and displays that gift in the show as well.
