Without a doubt the Wu Tang Clan are the Justice League of hip hop. Just as you would rattle off each name of the legendary superhero group, you can do the exact same thing with the Wu. One of its members, OG spitter Method Man, has enjoyed admiration from both male and female fans for almost thirty years. Many brothas have always appreciated his crazy style and stone cold lyrics, while the sistahs have been making him their #MCM since the 90’s. Over the years, Meth has been around in different capacities, from rapping, to acting, and hosting. So, there’s no denying he’s a pioneer in the game, and during the recent BET Awards, he reminded all of his fans why he’s still just as poppin’ as he was when the Wu came through back in ’93.

The 2019 BET Awards decided to honor the legendary ‘Queen of Hip Hop Soul,’ Mary J. Blige, with their prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. During her performance, Method Man showed love on their classic hit, “I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need To Get By” (around the 16:23 mark)…

In that brief moment, the thirst got really real when all the ladies in the Twitterverse were reminded about their inner lust for Clifford Smith a.k.a. the M-E-T…H-O-D – MAN!

ILOSM family, it’s no secret that the music we grew up on is now a bygone art…well, at least in mainstream media it is. Nevertheless, thankfully there are still a few artists who attempt to keep the old school legacy going, but honestly, most of today’s music ain’t what it used to be. The reason is probably because most artists of today lack soul (and unfortunately, some of them equally lack talent). Well, there’s one artist you can always count on to bring her A-Game every time and that artist is Fantasia. Since her American Idol debut, she has consistently offered up her music like a soul buffet, and with her recent performance during the BET Awards, she’s proven once again why she’s still a beast in the game. But her latest performance was steeped in love, after almost losing her baby brother in a motorcycle accident.

A Long Recovery

Fantasia’s brother, Xavier Barrino, was critically injured in North Carolina, after a 2017 motorcycle crash almost took his life. Fantasia and her entire family have been there during his recovery; posting updates as Xavier learns to walk again. Last year we reported on Xavier’s progress, sharing videos from both Fantasia and brother, Ricco’s, Instagram pages. In a since deleted video, Fantasia expressed how proud she was, as Xavier stood up for the first time since the accident:

Although Xavier needed the assistance of both his mother and his physical therapist to stand up, the sheer determination and will to recover was very evident in his face at that time as well. In Fantasia’s caption, she wrote:

“My Father is Awesome 👏🏾😢 @xavierbarrino I’m so proud of you baby You never gave up the fight I TOLD YALL HE WOULD WALK AGAIN AND IM STANDING ON THAT ‘HE WILL’ Father THANK YOU 🙏🏾”

Now, almost two years later, Xavier is making even more progress and Fantasia gave an update right before she took the stage at the BET Awards on Sunday night.

Two of Black Hollywood’s most revered actresses are D.C. natives, Taraji P. Henson and Regina Hall. The two talented, beautiful ladies have always come across like the kinds of sistas who can hold their own within powerful Hollywood circles; as well as at the block party, vibin’ to some ‘hood classics. During Sunday night’s BET Awards, they both proved the latter when they took to the stage during a segment, dedicated to their hometown, featuring legendary GoGo legends, EU & Sugar Bear.

Setting It Off Right

BET has always had a knack for selecting the right hosts to emcee their annual celebration of ‘All Black Everything,’ known as the BET Awards. And this year, they decided to tap the one and only Regina Hall as the hostess with the mostess. Hall is definitely one of the funniest ladies working today, and she’s been busting her behind in recent years, with roles in Girls Trip and the new update of the classic film, Shaft. But comedy is where her talent shines the most, as she showed while announcing she would be the host for this year’s ceremony:

In the world of classic R&B, there are a few artists who sit at the top of the chain. However, one name that immediately conjures up love and soul, is Anita Baker. In the 1980’s, her smooth, soothing voice lulled many into a trance; and even now, she’s guaranteed to be in every soul music lover’s playlist. So naturally, people love it when she performs. Apparently, though, it’s not nice to toy with her fans’ emotions and this is a lesson BET found out the hard way, when fans tuned in to watch the live BET Awards show; but Anita was nowhere in sight.

She’s A True Legend, But Did Fans Get It Twisted?

Last year BET did the absolute right thing, by honoring Anita with a ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award. After a tribute by some of today’s most soulful ladies, Anita expressed her gratitude. And she did so with a message, for everyone in the room, that called for unity within the Black recording community.

Fans must have still been reeling from her inspiring message, because many were under the impression that Anita would be returning for the 2019 ceremony. A quick overview of those who were scheduled to appear (via O Magazine), showed that she was never listed though:

This year’s performers include Cardi B, City Girls, DJ Khaled, Kiana Lede, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lil Baby, Lil Nas X, Lucky Dave, Migos, and Mustard. As for presenters, the network has tapped Lena Waithe, Marsai Martin, Morris Chestnut, Taraji P. Henson, and Yara Shahidi.

Nipsey Hussle is a legend, not only in the hood but around the world. He wasn’t called “Neighborhood Nip” for nothing. Now, his legacy is receiving the Humanitarian Award.

Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom was known around Los Angeles — and now, the world — for his humanitarian spirit.

With that in mind, this year’s Humanitarian Award will go toward uplifting his legacy, which will be presented at the 2019 BET Awards. According to Root, “It’ll be extra special since the award will be presented in his hometown of Los Angeles.”

Connie Orlando, Executive Vice-President, Head of Programming at BET, mentions the following statement in a recent press release:

“As a prolific artist and leader, Nipsey Hussle was zealous about driving change for the betterment of his community, empowering and employing those in need and being an influential and highly respected activist. His passing was a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry and to the culture.”

“We will continue to remember his advocacy and be inspired by the groundwork he set forth and his dire commitment to social change,” the VP says regarding Nipsey. “We are forever grateful, humbled and honored to have experienced his presence and we are invested in doing our part to ensure that the marathon will indeed continue. It is an immense honor for us to recognize him with this year’s Humanitarian Award.”

Ronnie DeVoe’s Speech

First to open up the speech was Ronnie DeVoe, who said:

“30 plus years of a music industry that will chew you up and spit you out. All six of us standing on this stage right now man! What an amazing thing!”

Ronnie’s Moms got a lil’ misty eyed in the audience as he spoke.

Johnny Gill’s Speech

Up next was Johnny Gill, who- in classic Gill form- took us to chuuuurch for about 40 seconds, as he put on his preacher-man voice and said:

“All praises go to God because without him, we wouldn’t be standing here today. We’ve been through some ups and we’ve been through some downs, but God said he’ll never leave you and never forsake you. Some of y’all know what I’m talking ’bout when he said ‘No weapon formed against you shall prosper. That’s why we stand here today!”

Bobby Brown’s Speech

Then came Bobby B., who got the most screams from the crowd as he stepped up to the mic. Not only were people screaming because they loved him, they were screaming because of the unimaginable, horrific pain he harbors after losing his daughter, but he’s still standing. He gave an emotional speech about the “sh*t” he’s been through throughout the years. Here’s a part of what he said:

“Back in the days when we first began, I used to tell the guys we were gonna be successful….I just didn’t know how successful. I didn’t know how much our fans were gonna stick with us, the way y’all have stuck with us. […] For 35 years y’all have been our backbone, y’all have been there for us through and thin and I know I’ve been through some sh*t so…thank you for sticking with me…I love y’all so much.”

Ricky Bell’s Speech

Next up to the mic was Ricky Bell, who after seeing The New Edition Story, his fans know him in a much different light. Now that we know he’s succumb to and overcome a long battle with cocaine addiction, there’s a sense of realness we understand about his willingness to reveal his most vulnerable times in life and we respect that. That realness also came forth in his acceptance speech when he opened it up by addressing the continuing struggles N.E. still goes through internally to this day:

“This is what fate looks like [as he held up the BET Award]. Being in New Edition has been a continual roller coaster ride.[…] We go through a lotta ups, a lotta downs, but his grace continues to be sufficient. […] He always does for us what we can’t find the strength to do for ourselves. So I just wanna give God the praise.”

Ralph’s Speech

Ralph a.k.a. ‘Rizz’ made the ladies scream when he stepped to the mic. He thanked his kids, brother, and sister for supporting him for so long and understanding his long work hours. He also announced his new album, which released today (June 26, 2017) titled, Rizzo: It’s Lonely At The Top– a title that perfectly describes what we now know (after watching The N.E. Story) has been the career of Ralph as the thoughtful lead singer of N.E., who put his team first when put to the test. Ralph also thanked and paid homage to his beloved mother, Patricia Tresvant, who passed away in 1996.

Michael Bivins’ Speech

Last to speak was Michael Bivins, who did an honorable thing for the man who deserves a ton of credit for New Edition’s success. That man is their choreographer/former manager/mentor/big brother/Ronnie DeVoe’s biological uncle, Brooke Payne. As you can see, the brotha wears many hats and Bivins acknowledged that Brooke had every right to be standing on that stage with N.E. as their 7th member. So he called Brooke onstage and surprisingly presented him with his own BET Lifetime Achievement Award. The perfect way to end an honor well deserved…

Congratulations to N.E.! Be on the lookout for their upcoming tour, which is being promoted by the legendary event/boxing promoter, Al Hyman.

Okay ILOSM family, we’ve gotta call it how we see it and how we see it is sometimes when it comes to these new school/old school collaborations, some of these youngins can hold their own and some of them need to step away from the stage and stay in their lane…at least when the Old Schoolers are on it. We don’t mean to sound so harsh, because we have no problem giving credit where credit is due, but we still have to give our honest opinions.

With that said, let’s take a look at how these Old School artists showed up and showed OUT at the 2015 BET Awards last night.

First up is Patti LaBelle! Patti stepped onto that stage to sing “If Only You Knew” with K. Michelle and Tamar Braxton, that’s when it was clear to see the difference between a seasoned artist, who’s been doing it for 57 years, and two artists who are pretty new at this (in comparison to Patti). Don’t get me wrong, K. and Tamar can sing, but Patti showed up and showed OUT and I ain’t mad at that one bit! In case you missed it, check out Patti kiilin’ it on stage.
