Remember the pacifier-toting actor in old school film Boyz N The Hood? His name was “Dooky” in the film. In the film, “Dooky” was the homie who was always hangin’ on the block, and down for whatever.  His real name was Dedrick Gobert, and he hadn’t even turned 23 years old, but he was violently killed years ago.

He also appeared in supporting roles in two other Singleton directed films; Poetic Justice (1993) and Higher Learning (1995), which was released after his death, but many fans weren’t aware he was actually deceased by that time.

Details of what happened to Dedrick Gobert, and how he was killed…

Dedrick Gobert was shot and killed on an isolated road, after arguing during a drag race. This reads like a script in a movie, but this was sadly real life, that ending with 2 people dead, 1 paralyzed, and another charged and sentenced to death. Read how the events unfolded…

Violence Erupted During Drag Race

According to LATimes, Dedrick and about 39 other people were partaking in an illegal drag race in November 1994. It took place in Mira Loma, CA. Apparently a fight between Dedrick and members of the ABC Gang erupted shortly after the drag race, leaving Dedrick and his friend, Ignacio Hernandez, fatally shot; and Dedrick’s girlfriend, non-fatally shot and left paralyzed from the neck down.

Witnesses Testimony

Witnesses testified that Gobert (Dooky) reached under his shirt as if he was reaching for a gun. The ABC gang members responded by rushing Gobert and proceeded to kick, stomp and hit him. Gobert’s friend Ignacio Hernandez and Gobert’s girlfriend Jenny Hyon attempted to break up the fight. Hernandez attempted to shield Gobert’s body from being stomped by lying on top of him but got kicked in the head. Hyon also attempted to help but she too was kicked in the head.

Roger Boring and Lester Maliwat, two ABC members who were involved in the fight, testified that they both thought the fight was over and began to retreat to their cars. Boring recalled that Enraca grabbed Hernandez by the head and shoulder and shot him in the upper body. Both men said they saw Enraca shoot Gobert while he was lying on the ground. Boring said he saw Enraca turn around and shoot Jenny Hyon after she kicked him in the back. Maliwat testified that when he was pulling out of the parking lot after the shootings, Enraca jumped into his car. As he was driving away, Maliwat said that he saw Hyon lying on the ground in an awkward position and asked Enraca why he “shot the girl”. Enraca stated, “F*ck them. They deserved it.” (Source

Suspect’s Testimony Details And Sentencing

It was also reported that the suspect, Sonny Enraca, stated that he was acting in self defensed, and was initially sentenced to the death penalty:

Enraca’s defense attorney maintained that Enraca was acting in self-defense and only pulled his gun to shoot in the air in an effort to stop the fighting. According to his initial statement to police, Enraca said that he grabbed Ignacio Hernandez by the head when he was lying on the ground because he thought he recognized him and wanted to ask him where he was from. Hernandez responded by pushing Enraca’s hand away which Enraca interpreted as an attempt to grab his gun. He admitted to shooting Hernandez in the shoulder (an autopsy determined Hernandez was shot twice – once in the head and once in the back).

Enraca said that after he shot Hernandez, Gobert, who was also lying on the ground, cursed at him and began moving. Enraca thought that Gobert was attempting to pull his gun out to shoot him so he shot Gobert in the head. After shooting both men, Enraca said that Jenny Hyon pushed and attempted to hit him. In an attempt to scare her away, he said that he fired a shot that he thought went over her head but instead struck her in the neck. On the night of the shootings, Enraca admitted that he had been drinking heavily and had consumed “two lines” of methamphetamine earlier in the evening.

On May 12, 1999 Enraca was sentenced to death.(Source)

In 2019, Sony Enraca’s death sentenced was put on ice, due to California Governor Gavin Newsome’s executive moratarium in 737 California death sentence cases. However, Sonny is reportedly still serving time for the murders and shooting.

Most of us never knew his name, but we knew his face from his small, but memorable role in Boyz N’ The Hood. His name was Lloyd Avery II (pictured in the above photo, left). Lloyd’s Boyz N’ The Hood character was the street thug who killed “Ricky” (Morris Chestnut) as he was running for his life down that alley, on his way home from picking up a few groceries from the store.

Well, Lloyd sadly ended up living out that real life scenario in several ways. His actions landed him in prison, serving time for a double murder, and sadly, he ultimately was murdered in 2005. Lloyd’s brother, actor Che Avery, gave the details of how Lloyd went from being an up-and-coming actor –from a quiet middle class neighborhood– to a real life gang member: (courtesy of King Magazine)

Che [Lloyd Avery II’s brother and actor] remembers the helicopters being louder than usual and seeing a lot of foot traffic out front. Lloyd was with his bike in the kitchen, where he gave his brother a hug, last night’s situation already forgotten [when Lloyd almost confided in Che that he had just killed 2 people], and then left through the back door. Riding on Crescent Heights Boulevard, he made a U-turn and pulled up to the driver’s side of a police car.

Lloyd leaned down, brazenly asked, “What’s up?” and released his grasp from the handlebars of his aluminum Mongoose. The officer opened his door, and Lloyd stumbled. He quickly recovered and sped west in an attempt to elude the cops but soon collided with another police vehicle. He was arrested for a double homicide.

At the time of his capture, the 30-year-old actor was finally landing some work. He made his name in a small part in Boyz N the Hood, but was quickly sidetracked. Earlier that summer, Lloyd booked back-to-back features, the Master P produced Lockdown, and Shot, where he also served as a technical advisor. In the latter, he played “G-Ride,” a menacing yet charismatic gang member. To those who knew him then, it wasn’t much of a stretch. But to others, it just didn’t make sense.

His brother did not understand his new “gangster” ambitions:

“He was kind of meek,”says Malcolm Norrington, who played Knucklehead No. 1 to Lloyd’s Knucklehead No. 2 in Boyz. “He was not anything near a street guy. Within a year of Boyz, I was hearing about him missing auditions. I don’t remember when I heard about him joining [a gang]. I just remember being perplexed. To me, it was like, ˜What is he doing Blooding? Lloyd? C’mon.’”

Indeed, shortly after Boyz, Lloyd baffled those closest to him by leaving his middle-class neighborhood for the Jungle, a heavily Blood-affiliated area between La Brea Avenue, Crenshaw Boulevard, Santo Tomas Drive and Coliseum Street. Lloyd embraced his new home, tattooing the word “JUNGLEZ” above his left eyebrow.

“Instead of just being a Hollywood-like studio gangster, he was living it,” Che says, speaking from his mom Linda’s house. His voice, a soulful, gruff twang, is contemplative. “My brother turned into a for-real for-real gangster.” Apparently, Lloyd Avery never got over playing “Knucklehead No. 2. … I like to call it the Tupac Syndrome,” Che says. “He felt like he had something to prove when he really didn’t. Even if you have money and fame, you will sacrifice all of that just to have respect from a bunch of thugs.”

But unlike Pac’s demise under the glitz of the Vegas strip, Lloyd’s murder was far from glamorous. He was killed by his Satan-worshipping cellmate in Pelican Bay State Prison. Outside of his family, it wasn’t really news. Not even to the corrections officers who took two days to discover his body.

It’s a tragic situation and there were clearly some deeper issues going on with Lloyd Avery II, but it’s just like the Old School saying goes: ‘You live by the sword, you die by the sword.’

So what was it like to be the “It girl” on one of the most popular films the 90’s era? I’m pretty sure it was a beautiful thing for this 90’s actress, in fact it’s probably every up-and-coming actor’s dream- instant success and overnight fame beyond what they could have imagined. You might not know her name, but if you’ve ever seen the films, Boyz N Da Hood and Class Act, you definitely know her face.

Her name is Alysia Rogers and she’s the actress who played the role of “Shanice,” “Ricky’s (Morris Chestnut) girlfriend in Boyz N Da Hood.

She’s also known for her Class Act role as “Damita,” the girl Kid’s (of Kid N’ Play) character was crushin’ on in the movie.

Many actors in Alysia’s position have a difficult time finding more roles and not being typecast as a result of being on such iconic movies, or TV shows. It’s happened to some of the best of them and only a few have been able to overcome that hurdle. It’s not that actors in those predicaments don’t want to work, it’s probably that they can’t find work. I’m pretty sure that if a popular TV network were to call Alysia and offer her a top spot on a primetime show, she’d take it. She and many others like her- such as “Urkel” (Jaleel White) from Family Matters, “Danny” (Danny Bonaduce) from The Partridge Family, or “Roger” (Ernest Lee Thomas) from What’s Happening, for example- simply can’t live down those iconic characters. And then they’re ultimately forced back into society and sometimes that’s pretty tough to do because EVERYONE recognizes them everywhere they go.

It’s like seeing “Cindy Brady” from the Brady Bunch in Walmart, or “Thelma” from Good Times in Costco’s…it’s just weird. But fortunately, Alysia Rogers did NOT let it beat her down, in fact she’s handling it very well and she’s only getting better with time. Y’all gotta see her now! Scroll down to see what we mean…

Bam!!! Alysia Rogers is just as beautiful as she ever was! Alysia is somewhere between 45 to 51 years old now and she’s looking more like 30. *Sidenote: Some sources give conflicting reports of her age, stating that she’s 45, the only suspect problem about that, is that if she is 41 now, she would have been 16 at the time that Boyz N Da Hood was actually filmed, and that doesn’t seem very likely.*

Time has definitely been on her side. In terms of her career, she took a very long break from the acting game and in 2013 she resurfaced in an independent movie titled, Beyond Merrit.When she’s not acting, she’s donating her time to the community by motivationally speaking to the youth about gang violence, and rising above their environment, no matter how dire their opportunities may seem.

Alysia also shared to her Facebook page, what it was like for her growing up as what she called an “awkward child:

It has been over 27 years since director John Singleton’s “Boyz N the Hood” was released. It marked a time when the true life in the “hood” had been documented “by us, for us”.  The film followed 3 childhood friends: Doughboy, played by rapper Ice Cube of N.W.A., Doughboy’s brother Ricky, played by Morris Chestnut; and Tre, played by Cuba Gooding Jr.  John Singleton became the first African American and the youngest person nominated for a best-director Oscar for this movie, and we all loved it!

If you don’t know Redge Green, then you’ve never seen the movie, Boyz N Da Hood, and you definitely aren’t old school!  He was one of the homeboys that ran with Doughboy (Ice Cube) and Rickey (Morris Chestnut) in the film. The character’s name was “Chris” whom was paralyzed in the movie, but many didn’t know that he is actually a paraplegic.

Redge Green is the first African American paraplegic SAG (Screen Actor’s Guild) actor and the first in the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) because he is a recording artist as well.

In our exclusive interview with Redge, we found that he’s a fighter, a warrior, and funny as hell! He’s very animated and a pleasure to interview. Take a look at Part 1 of our interview with Redge where he talks about being shot at the age of 6, and how his father committed suicide within 48 hours of being shot.

Getting shot at 6 years old…I could not imagine! That had to have been devastating and did you know the person who used you as a shield?

I didn’t know him personally, my Grandparents did. They were my Grandparents’ neighbors. They lived right next door to my Grandmother’s house and we were passing their house skating, uh, riding bikes and things. One lived across the street from my Grandmother and these two older men began fighting, I think they were playing cards or something, got into an argument, had been drinking that day and uh, got into a major fight you know. One got hit…we saw when he got hit in the mouth and that was pretty interesting to us because the closest thing we ever saw to anything happening like that was cartoons. So we were like ‘Oh my God, who’s gon’ break-up these adults?’ And when he said I’m going get my gun, we just started running and everybody said ‘get outta here.’ He looked up the sidewalk and came to lift me up and I thought he (the neighbor who used him as a shield) was coming to get me, and I begin to yell because he wouldn’t let me go and behold the man came out and stopped in the middle of the street and pulled the trigger. It hit my right shoulder, ricocheted off my collar bone and hit my spinal cord and paralyzed my legs.

How did you deal with that?

I almost died, I lost most of my blood laying there waiting for the ambulance to come and pick me up. And so for me to get shot on that 12th of February and then within 48 hours my Father would commit suicide. On the morning of the 14th he’d come back in town from visiting his biological dad at the time. But I did not know my Father had passed away until about maybe almost a month, while I was still in the hospital and my Mother brought some pictures with my uncle…and she said “Baby I got good news and some bad news.” Good news; she brought me some toys.  Bad news; they brought the doctors in and I wondered why were all of these people were in my room and she said “Baby you lost your father.”  That’s how they told me my father had passed away.

Did you ever feel any type of resentment toward him (Father) for leaving you when you needed him the most?

So I think I had a bigger question to God, ‘Why me?, Why my Father and the fact that he died. We were told that he had died of a heart attack, and for years until people started to say “boy your dad was too young to have a heart attack at 26, 27 years old.” [When] I got older my questions changed.  I was in fear (of the man who shot me), more than anything because it was [like] ‘Why did he shoot me?’ I was glad that i was still alive, knowing that my father was gone and I knew a lot of other people who passed away. So death was a sting to my side. So I grew up with a lot of fear and a lot of why’s.

When I grew older and found how my dad passed away and all of the different pressures he dealt with. To be 26 years old and have five kids, two with disabilities, one with one of her eyes missing, that was a lot back in those days.

Over the years I’ve gained back a lot of my feeling [in my legs] and I still believe that maybe one day, who knows? Maybe I’ll be like that man in the Bible who they say was blind for 38 years and then boom he could see (LOL)!

During the month that you were in the hospital and didn’t know that your father had passed, were you wondering why he hadn’t come to visit you?

Yeah I was asking that all the time: ‘Where is dad?’ Why hasn’t he come to see me?’ But I knew that he had gone out of town and as a kid you’re not gauging Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday when you’ve got machines hooked all up to you.  So when I kept asking [where my dad was] and my Mother would say “Baby, you know, he’s gonna be here soon.” And of course that wasn’t true, but he was there in a different way. We were at the same hospital- upstairs is me in the ICU and downstairs they pronounced my father [had] passed away.

“I always say it’s three stages- it’s tragedy, strategy from God and then you have victory, and so, I’ve been living in victory”.

“Young Ricky’s” name is Dononvan and he’s a grown man now. It’s funny how time seems to stand still when we think of child actors if they didn’t grow up in the spotlight and become adult actors as well. We always picture them as looking the exact same way as they did back in the day, don’t we?

We also discovered that Donovan is the brother of a FAMOUS 90’s actor and wait ’til you see who he is.

BAM!!! His brother is actor, Darius McCrary, a.k.a. “Eddie Winslow” from Family Matters! Now that we see them side by side, it’s easy to tell that they are definitely brothers.

Darius and Donovan  are very close and they are now very involved in music. They’re actually in a group together called “D List”, which according to PledgeTheMusic, ‘is a collection of notable musicians, producers, and engineers.

The group focuses on creating self-recorded albums, as well as production for many Grammy winning artists. The group consists of brothers Darius McCrary, Donovan “Donny” McCrary, and super-producer “G1.” The name is derived from the group’s favorite key, “D.”’

D List released their first album, “The Dissertation of D” in 2013 and it also featured their Dad, Howard McCrary, who is a well known Grammy winning jazz pianist.
