After successfully recovering from a stroke, Snoop Dogg’s 24-year-old daughter, Cori Broadus, has a lot to celebrate. Recently, she enjoyed some quality time with her pops and legendary singer, Charlie Wilson. The heartwarming reunion showed just how far Cori has come in her journey to overcome adversity.

In a video posted on her Instagram, Cori shared a glimpse of her progress. Walking down the street, basking in the warm sunlight, she radiated positivity and strength.

It was a major contrast to the alarming messages she had shared on January 18, 2024 while she was hospitalized. At that time, Cori wasn’t sure if she would fully recover, because her blood pressure had spiked to dangerous levels. Thanks to the dedicated care of doctors and nurses, she was able to find her path to recovery.

Cori has suffered from Lupus related symptoms ever since she was diagnosed at 6 years of age. However, it’s unclear if her recent stroke was directly linked to her Lupus status.

Thankfully, just eleven days after her stroke – on Monday, January 29, 2024 – Cori joined her dad, Snoop, at Charlie Wilson’s 71st birthday bash. It was the perfect cherry on top after the Gap Band OG received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Cori looked healthy and vibrant as she danced along to her dad’s performance. Together, Charlie and Snoop brought the house down with their rendition of “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,” with Snoop holding down his and Tupac’s iconic verses.

The celebration didn’t stop there. Snoop also had a surprise of his own. He was unexpectedly reunited with his long-lost Nate Dogg tribute jacket, which is now in the possession of journalist, Jake Rohn. It was a touching moment that showcased the lasting impact of Snoop’s music and artistry.

Cori’s remarkable recovery journey serves as an inspiration to all. Her determination, coupled with the support of her loved ones, has given her the strength to overcome adversity. As she continues to make progress, she reminds us of the power of resilience and the importance of cherishing every moment. We wish Cori continued strength and success on her path to recovery.

I had a brick for my pillow, a piece of cardboard for my bed, and 3 carts wrapped in cellophane. Time stood still for me, couldn’t go no farther from that point on, drugs played a huge part…from that day on for two years just nothing but drugs every single day.

The lesson we can take from this is that when we completely hit rock bottom, we need to pause and simply ask ourselves one basic question: ‘What is it that I have?’ Then once we’ve recognized what gift we have, we need to do everything in our power to properly build off of our gift – no matter how small it is. That gift that we all have, represents possibility- the possibility to be greater than what we were yesterday. Charlie Wilson did that and there’s no denying that he’s a walking, talking testimony of what being triumphant mentally and psychologically truly means. All he had was his voice, which was his gift, and it is his voice and his perseverance that has allowed him to fight his way back to the top.

One look at the way 68-year-old R&B legend, Charlie Wilson, still cuts UP on stage and one would never think that it wasn’t that long ago that the brotha was in a fight for his life. The fight was so terrifying, that the Gap Band veteran admitted he thought his “life was over.” Thankfully, he’s made through cancer battle and is sharing his experience, pain, his additional family heartache, and triumph with his fans.

His mission is to spread awareness to men, especially Black men, who oftentimes shy away from going to the doctor regularly…until it’s too late. A trait Wilson admittedly had as well.

In a prior interview via BlackDoctor.org, Charlie Wilson explained his cancer journey:

Everything was just going great until I went to the doctor for a general physical in the summer of 2008.

My wife, Mahin, made an appointment for me to have my annual physical. I have never liked going to the doctor or getting any type of exam. In addition to the physical, Mahin suggested I have a prostate exam.

I definitely did not want to have that – for various reasons – but Mahin was very convincing.

But Wilson Was Not Emotionally Prepared For What Happened Next

Charlie Wilson continued:

After a few days, I heard back from the doctor. He encouraged me to make an appointment for the following month for additional monitoring. He explained that African-American men were more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than any other race, and he wanted to keep an eye on things.

“I returned in a month. Based on follow-up tests, my doctor suggested that I see a specialist for a biopsy. I immediately got nervous and was concerned about what this could possibly mean.

I remember hearing I had prostate cancer like it was yesterday. I was convinced my life was over. I worked hard at overcoming other life challenges and had the will to return to the top of my game in the music business. I put together a good show; had a catalog of great new songs to record and perform, etc. But now this?!”

When Doctor Gave Wilson His Results, His Dad Hit Him With Devastating News Too

“My initial thought was that my life and career were over”:
Charlie Wilson- Our visit with the specialist started with, “I have some good news and some bad news.” My wife asked for the bad news and the doctor said “Mr. Wilson, you have prostate cancer.” My initial reaction was to get up and leave the room. My wife calmly asked me to sit down and have the doctor give us the good news. The good news was that it had been detected early and could be effectively treated.

Thank God for my wife and her patience and understanding. My initial thought was that my life and career were over. Nothing was further from the truth.

The doctor gave us some informational materials and our research began. We discussed options with my health care team and by working with them closely, I am now cancer free.

However, my journey was not over. During our research I learned that African-American men are 60% more likely to be diagnosed with his disease than other races or ethnicities. It was at that time that I decided it was time for me to start informing as well as performing.

He Later Learned His Father Was Suffering From Same Cancer:

C.W.- “During my own prostate cancer battle, I learned that my father was also conducting his own battle. Unfortunately, he did not tell us that he had prostate cancer. It wasn’t until I called to let him know about my diagnosis that he told me. That was a very difficult conversation for me and also confirmed my commitment to tell my story in order to make my community aware of this disease and encourage them to discuss it.”

When we think of Charlie Wilson, we think of the lead singer of the Gap Band, who had us vibin’ to fire hits like, “Outstanding,” “Burn Rubber On Me,” “You Dropped A Bomb On Me,” and many more classic bangers. We also think of the brotha was the ‘comeback kid,’ so to speak. Charlie was a music success story that also had a sequel, when he re-emerged in the mid 90s, after so many of his fellow 70’s/80’s music colleagues had fallen from grace and into obscurity.

One of the men responsible for helping Charlie to make that comeback and connect with a whole new audience, was singer/producer, R. Kelly. Kelly always had a knack for re-inventing old school legends, like Charlie and Ron Isley, for example. R&B legend, Charlie Wilson, has always been a straight shooter whenever he speaks- regardless of if he’s spillin’ the beans about his personal past struggles with addiction, or his personal opinions of other legends in the music game. It’s the latter that brings us here today ILOSM fam.’

We dug up a past MTV interview on Mr. ‘Charlie…last name Wilson’ and discovered there was a time when he thought Ron Isley was a hater instead of a congratulator.

The year was 2002, just 7 years after Charlie had become clean and sober from cocaine and alcohol addiction. During that time, he’d watched his fellow Jive Records labelmate, R. Kelly revive Ron Isley’s career and was looking for a comeback of similar sorts.

R. Kelly’s creation of Isley’s Mr. Biggs persona in the early 2000’s put Isley back on the map within the then current state of R&B and introduced him to a much broader audience.

Charlie saw that Kelly had the heat at that time and was adamant about having Kellz produce and reinvent his career as well. So much so, that he even showed up to a random Chicago gym in the hood, just to track down Kelly, as he was playing basketball with his friends.

” ‘1 a.m.?’ ” Wilson asked, recalling his reaction to the time he was told to meet R. Kelly at the Chicago gym. “I was like, ‘I don’t know about this sh–. I don’t be out at 1:00. Those days are long gone.’ ”

“There’s some really crazy dudes in there playing basketball,” Wilson, now chuckling, continued. It wasn’t so funny at the time though.

“Man, I was getting sleepy,” he said. “And I was like, ‘I got on all this jewelry, and somebody is gonna jack me.’ ” [via MTV]

Kelly showed up way later than 1a.m. and to Charlie’s surprise, he came with Ron Isley. Wilson also learned that Isley was the cause of their tardiness, therefore, he thought Ron was hatin’ on him and trying to block him from meeting with Kellz. It was in that moment, that Charlie really got into artist mode and began pitching himself as an artist to Kelly, while shading Ron Isley at the same damn time:

“They was late,” Wilson recalled. “I said, ‘Rob, you gotta be on time.’ They got there around the second half. Rob said, ‘I was ready at 7:00, like you said. I was waiting for Biggs.’ When he said Biggs was late, I was like, ‘Oh, [Ron] is hating.’ ” […]

“I started talking sh–,” Wilson said. “‘I can’t get nobody to produce me. … Biggs, what you gotta do to get your record produced?’ Rob was like ‘Aww sh–. Here we go!’ I was clowning them all. [Kelly] was like, ‘Uncle Charlie, you wanna go to the studio tonight?'”

“We went to the studio and Biggs was mad at me. He talked for four hours till Rob went to sleep. Finally he said, ‘I ain’t mad at you no more.’ I said ‘You shouldn’t be. You talked till R. Kelly went to sleep.’ It was funny.” -MTV

The good thing is that Ron wasn’t hating and Charlie Wilson ended making one of the biggest comebacks of his career with his R. Kelly produced hit, “Charlie, Last Name Wilson” in 2005. Also good news, is that several record labels responded to Charlie exactly how Kelly told him they would after hearing he was working with him- they all came knocking:

“Some labels just don’t see the visions,” Wilson explained. “They’d be like,’Who you trying to target? What fanbase?’ N—a, I’m just gonna sing. Can you put the record out? They was trying to put me in a cubbyhole. For many years they was looking at me funny, I guess. Then after I said I was mingling with R. Kelly, everybody started coming out the woodwork — some of the same people that turned me down! I was like, ‘Dog, I was knocking on your door just last year. You should have hollered.'” -MTV

Fast forward to today though, and Charlie Wilson has publicly stated that he no longer gets down with his former producer-turned friend, R. Kelly, due to the sexual allegations against him.
