Here’s a surprising Old School fun fact we wanted to share with you all, ILOSM family. Remember the kid who played Whitney Houston’s son, “Fletcher,” in The Bodyguard movie? He was a 10 year old youngin’ at the time, but now dude is a 39-year-old man, and we had NO clue his step-mother and his dad are very popular Old School legends!

Aside from starring in The Bodyguard, he had roles in other known films and TV shows as well, including Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Sugar Hill, he was the voice of one of the kids in the animated movie, Bebe’s Kids, and more. He also made a name for himself in TV shows, such as the Disney series Lizzie McGuire and Mackenzie Falls and also in The Secret Life of the American Teenager. All along, he managed to build his own brand without being buried in his famous parents’ shadows.

Lil’ “Fletcher” – whose real name is DeVaughn – ain’t so ‘little’ anymore.

After spending much of his childhood as a kid actor, DeVaughn briefly stepped away from acting to devote his time to his studies. He graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a degree in television production and business finance. He also had a brief stint as a mortgage broker, before returning to his passion of acting.

Today, at 39 years old, DeVaughn’s still doing his thing in the acting world. Some of his more recent work include the popular John Singleton created series, “Snowfall,” where DeVaughn has a recurring role as the character, “Kane.”

As far as we know, DeVaughn is single has no kids as of yet, and he’s very close to his legendary parents.

Debbie’s been DeVaughn’s stepmom ever since he was 1 year old in 1984, when she married his dad, Norman.  As a result of their lengthy union, DeVaughn is very close to both his biological mom (who isn’t a celeb and stays out of the public eye) and Debbie. We’re sure Debbie and Norman are very proud of DeVaughn, who looks like a spitting image of his Pops by the way.

DeVaughn is still close to his former uncle-in-law — whom he refers to as his ‘uncle’ — Ahmad Rashad (Phylicia Rashad’s ex-husband), and sometimes hangs out with his uncle’s good friend, Michael Jordan.

Well damn…we must say that DeVaughn Nixon comes from quite a talented blended family. With an NBA legend for a dad, an acting/dancing/directing legend for a stepmother, a legendary actress for a step-aunt (Phylicia Rashad) and an NFL legend for an ex-uncle-in-law (Ahmad Rashad), he had no choice but to soak up some of that greatness and make it his own. When Debbie Allen took over Different World as the director, her stint with Lisa Bonet as a part of the cast didn’t last very long, but it wasn’t because of her doing, it was because of Bill Cosby’s decision, according to Debbie.

Here is what Debbie Allen said was the real reason behind Lisa leaving Different World below:

“When I first took over the show [It’s A Different World], one of the first things I did was meet with Lisa Bonet and she secreted to me that she was pregnant.

She had married Lenny Kravitz, and you know…I guess Bill had his feelings about that because he was possessive in a way. I mean they were his on-camera wife and children, but they still were his. I mean, the way he was with Phylicia [Rashad] (Debbie’s sister) too, I mean, that’s a whole ‘nother story.

So I said, ‘Well Lisa we have to go tell him … Honey, put some shoes on, don’t come up there with a bare foot…get your best dress, let’s comb your hair and let’s go up there to see him, let’s tell him together.’ So we got dressed, we went up there, and oooh…he [Bill Cosby] could see us coming! He saw us a mile away, he could see us coming (laughs). And he sat there and looked at us; and I said, ‘Well, we have some things that we want to tell you.’ He said, “What is it? Are you pregnant?” And then we were like, ‘Oh my God.’ Then he said well what is so different about it? He looked at me, he said, ‘You were pregnant, your sister was pregnant, and so now what?”

And I explained to him how I wanted to use it [the pregnancy] on the show because that would be a great thing. To see a girl who’s [this] upper class kid, having a baby, not married because she didn’t want to be married…and the girls could root for her. I was explaining all that we could do. Well, honey I was just blowing smoke and didn’t know it (laughs). He listened to it.

We started talking about stories and then immediately — maybe about two or three weeks later — he was like, ‘You know what Debbie? No. She’s pregnant, Denise Huxtable is not pregnant, Lisa Bonet is pregnant, not Denise. So no…no you can’t have it, no we’re not gonna do it, no.’

So he took her [Lisa Bonet] back, I was so mad at him, I wanted to take her, but I understand, he just wanted her back. So she left us [the It’s A Different World cast] to go back home [to the ‘Huxtable’ house], she ended up getting married on the show, and whatever else happened over there.

All of these years, we’ve been hearing rumors about Lisa Bonet’s ‘attitude’ causing tension between she and Bill Cosby, which may still may true as well. But it’s good to get a first-hand account from Debbie Allen, as to why Lisa actually disappeared from It’s A Different World, and ultimately from The Cosby Show.

Actress/director/choreographer, Debbie Allen (70) and her big sister a.k.a. everyone’s favorite TV mom, Phylicia Rashad (72), have a lot more to celebrate, other than the fact that they are legendary in their own rights. In fact, these two ageless queens are celebrating their queen- their mother, Vivian Ayers, and thanking the Higher Power for her 97th orbit around the sun.

Debbie Allen’s B-Day Tribute To Mom

In a heartfelt online message, Debbie shared the photo of below, and showered their Moms with well deserved praise on her July 29th birthday:

“Happy birthday, Mom! At 97 you are still the greatest inspiration of our lives!”

Phylicia Rashad On Valuable Parental Lessons She Learned From Mom

In addition to Debbie’s admiration for their Mother, her big sis’ has long held that same adoration for mama Vivian as well. In an 80’s throwback interview with Bill Boggs TV (video above), the “Mrs. Claire Huxtable” actress proclaimed:

“I will not raise my children differently than my mother raised me. … My mother gave us aphorisms to learn as children.”

There are two lessons that stuck with The Cosby Show matriarch the most:

“One is, ‘The inner reality creates the outer form.’ I learned this when I was in grade school, I was very young. And the other is, ‘The Universe bears no ill to me, I bear no ill to it,'” said Phylicia Rashad.

In a prior interview with LATimes, Debbie Allen also spoke about how Vivian raised the famous high-achieving daughters to support each other, as opposed to competing against one another:

“We grew up with not a lot of money. We grew up with racial segregation. We grew up not being able to go to ballet class or downtown to a restaurant or to a movie,” said Allen, who opened the L.A.-based Debbie Allen Dance Academy in 2001. “And so my mother, Vivian Ayers, always made us believe that we were part of a universe that welcomed us and wanted our creativity and was waiting for us to do something good. And so we’ve been doing that forever.”

What Phylicia Rashad & Drake Are Up To

In a highly anticipated video for Drake’s latest single, “In My Feelings.” Well…it’s highly anticipated for young folks, but some of our fellow Old Schoolers are probably reading this and saying, ‘Who the hell is this song in popular demand?’ That’s an understandable question, given the fact that Drake’s new single targets the generation that was born years after “Claire’s” daughter, “Denise,” made her son, “Theo,” that jacked up yellow button down ‘Gordon Gutrell’ shirt.

Anywho, the song, “In My Feelings,” has been in hot demand for a couple reasons: (1) Because it’s supposedly about a real life anonymous love of Drake’s, whom his fans have started a viral search to find on their own. (2) Because a viral, yet possibly dangerous #InMyFeelingsChallenge was started by popular Instagrammer, Shiggy. The challenge is for people to jump outta their cars, in the middle of the street, highway, etc. to dance and rap the lyrics to “In My Feelings.”

The “Cosby Show”-star-turned-“Empire”-actress accepted Drake’s invitation to star as “Keke’s” mother in the video and “Power” actress, Lala Anthony, will be playing “Keke.”

Part of the video is shot at a home in New Orleans, LA.. In the comical video clip below, Phylicia is seen snappin’ at Drake, when he rolled up to the house unannounced, to beg for “Keke.” She tells him, “Carry your a$$ on home now,” among other things. Check out the clip here:

In addition to Lala’s and Phylicia’s features, Drake also included Shiggy in the video and New Orleans transgender bounce legend, Big Freedia. The latter move was a good one for Drake, because he caught a ton of flack for excluding Big Freedia from his prior “Nice For What” video, even though he sampled Freedia’s vocals in that song.

See?!! Told y’all Mrs. Allen can cut a rug and twerk at the same time. Anyways, back to her daughter, Vivian was recently the star of the musical, Freeze Frame, which was directed by her mother. She spoke to Pop Source TV at the time and admitted that being directed by her mom was a challenge at times, but she wouldn’t trade it for the world. Another thing that can’t go unnoticed is that Vivian is a doppelganger of her mother and father combined. She is as beautiful as both her moms and aunt still are, with the talent and ambition to match.

It’s gonna be interesting watching this next generation of the Allen/Rashad offspring (Phylicia Rashad’s daughter is an actress also) grow and become forces to be reckoned with, just like their parents. Of course that’s a lotta pressure on the next generation, but it is what it is- they’re gonna have to go hard or go home- a reality I’m sure they’re already aware of.
