Too Little, Too Late?

Ahhh…the infamous ‘Nipplegate’ Super Bowl XXXVIII controversy of 2004 has returned. It’s like the gift that keeps on giving. Well, on second thought, in Justin Timberlake’s case it ‘gives,’ but in Janet Jackson’s case it dually ‘took’ a whole lot from her, and possibly for her NOT to wanna go upside her Super Bowl co-performer’s head after he threw her under the bus years ago. Welp, fast forward to today and Janet’s big brothers are speaking out about the apology Justin  recently gave Janet regarding his tactics at that time, as well as the seventeen years it took for Justin to finally acknowledge his wrongdoing.

When Tito, Marlon, and Jackie Jackson appeared on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM radio show Wednesday, May 12, 2021, they expressed that they were glad Justin finally apologized to their baby sis’…even though it took him damn near twenty years to do so.

Marlon stated, “First of all, I just want to thank Justin Timberlake. It takes a man to step up and do that, so we do thank him.” Stating that they’d like to “move forward” from the negativity, Marlon continued, “…but you know, as they said in the old days: ‘Long as they talking about you – good or bad – you still in the public’s eye.”

Justin Timberlake’s Apology To Janet Jackson

The apology the Jackson brothers are referring to, is the one issued to Janet and singer, Britney Spears (Justin’s ex), that Justin randomly posted on social media in February of this year. Not quite sure what prompted it, guess he did a lil’ soul searching…but for whatever reason, here’s what Justin wrote:

“I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right. I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism.

I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed.”

What Really Happened?

For those who need a quick recap of how Justin did Janet dirty ever the since 2004 incident, here it is. Janet agreed to allow Justin to share her stage during the MTV-produced Super Bowl Halftime set, which aired on CBS. Depending on who you ask – Janet, Justin, CBS execs, MTV, etc. – ‘operation Nipplegate’ was either a planned ‘publicity stunt’; or the most-often-used excuse, a “wardrobe malfunction.” Soon after ‘Nipplegate’–  when Justin exposed Janet’s nipple-shielded breast as he sang the final lyrics, “Gonna have you naked by the end of this song,” Janet was getting ALL the backlash, while Justin pretty much received none. In an interview at that time, Justin said it was a “wardrobe malfunction.” However,  just days earlier Justin told Access Hollywood, “Hey man, we love giving you all something to talk about.”

In the months, years, and nearly two decades following ‘Nipplegate,’ Janet’s career and reputation continued plummeting within mainstream media, while Justin’s soared…all while he remained profusely silent as he witnessed Janet get publicly thrashed over THEIR (as in both of them) scandal. Janet even stated two years after ‘Nipplegate,’ that she felt like Justin threw her under the bus, by allowing media and fans to solely blame her “as opposed to us.”

The FCC also hit CBS with a $550k fine for indecency.

The Control” music icon’s career may have bee negatively impacted, while Justin Timberlake’s flourished, but the upside – if any – in all of this is that after Justin’s seventeen-years-too-late apology, Janet’s “Control” album sales instantly skyrocketed, becoming the 8th most downloaded album on Apple iTunes and #1 on Apple’s Top 40 U.S. Pop Album Chart . Ain’t that something?

By the way, Justin Timberlake’s apology sure did put a whole new spin on the Old School saying, ‘You’re a day late and a dollar short.’

In protest of Justin Timberlake’s perceived Janet diss, millions of fans flocked to Twitter in what became the trending #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay. JJDay was officially held on Super Bowl day, to throw massive shade at Timberlake and his halftime performance.

“You have no idea how much I love you. … I want to thank you for the support and the love that you’re always showing me. I appreciate you…and I love you so much.”

She then wished everyone a Happy Valentine’s day and then her Old School ways surfaced briefly. Y’all know we, Old Schoolers, aren’t always the sharpest in the pack when it comes to all of the new technology and devices, and apparently neither is Janet (51). When ending her video, she tried to do so smoothly, but instead turned on her camera’s flash, before asking herself “What am I doing?” It was cute to witness and then the video cut.

Justin Timberlake has faced lots of backlash for his performance at Super Bowl LII and most of the criticism stems from his presumed lack of respect for the legends – Janet Jackson and Prince. As expected, many of Janet and Prince’s fans have dragged Justin to hell and his performance was picked apart by fans everywhere. But, now Prince’s sister is speaking out about the performance with a relatively different perspective of the situation. Unlike fans, she claims her brother would have had a surprising opinion of the performance.

Tyka’s Reaction To Super Bowl LII Prince Tribute:

On Monday, February 5, TMZ caught up with Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, she shared a few details about the situation. Apparently, she and the rest of the family were aware that he’d be singing Prince’s hit song “I Would Die 4 U.”

Since the Super Bowl took place in Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota, it seemed befitting that he would be remembered there. In addition to the performance, the city was illuminated in purple as a tribute to the legendary singer. However, Tyka has admitted that she wasn’t aware her brother would be appearing on the projection screen since it was announced that Justin wouldn’t be using Prince’s hologram.

But despite all of the controversy over the performance, Tyka has revealed she believes her brother wouldn’t have had a problem with it. She admitted that although Prince was very outspoken, he never held grudges against people. By now, everyone has probably heard about Justin Timberlake and Prince’s beef over the years. But Tyka believes her brother had put their differences aside long ago. So, it looks like there are no problems between Justin Timberlake and Prince’s family.

Once it was confirmed that Justin Timberlake would be performing without Janet Jackson for Super Bowl LII, the legendary singer/actress’ fans definitely felt some kind of way. So to honor her legacy on Super Bowl Sunday, fans declared the day #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay. But unfortunately for Janet’s fans, there was one person who just refused to let her be great. Apparently, NFL analyst Michael Rapaport believes the reason Justin Timberlake was invited to perform is because Janet Jackson just isn’t “popping” anymore.

Not Poppin’?:

On February 4, Rapaport took to Twitter to address Janet’s fans who weren’t pleased with the Super Bowl halftime show. According to Bossip, he also downplayed the shade that’s been thrown her way. After the game, he tweeted, “Can anybody crying for Janet Jackson right now tell me the last Janet Jackson song that was popping? Motherf**ka’s wanna make nothing something 24/7/365 & Super Bowl Sunday.”

Of course, Janet’s fans didn’t take Rapaport’s words lightly. Shortly after he shared the tweet, Black Twitter clapped back in a major way blasting him for his offensive and belittling comments. Needless to say, Rapaport was dragged to hell for his seemingly disrespectful comments about Janet Jackson. To many fans, it doesn’t matter if she never releases a new record, she’s a legend in her own right.

Despite Rapaport’s support of Justin Timberlake, his halftime performance has received all kinds of mixed reviews. While many fans showed support for Justin, many weren’t too thrilled about his tribute to Prince. That tribute came less than a day after he was said to have told Sheila E. he would not be using Prince’s hologram for the show. However, it looks like he still opted to include Prince in the performance. That also ticked off fans. With all the backlash Justin has faced over the past couple months, it’s probably safe to say he’s no longer invited to the cookout.

Well, well, well, here we are hours after the highly anticipated, yet controversial Super Bowl halftime show and Justin Timberlake is still the talk of social media-world. After watching his halftime performance, many couldn’t wait to weigh in on it online. I thought it was mediocre at best, but not everyone felt that way. Timberlake received mixed reviews all up and down Twitter and many celebs gave their opinions too.

One of those celebs is Prince’s good friend/comedian, Sinbad. He had a major issue with Justin opting to still include Prince in his show, by projecting Prince’s image onto what appeared to be some type of huge sheet, as Timberlake performed at the piano. Sinbad called out the past shade and diss track Timberlake did about Prince a few years ago. In fact, Sinbad hated Timberlake’s tribute so much, that he actually used profanity- something he’s been known for having  built his legendary comedic career not doing- at least not in public. Here’s what Sinbad tweeted:

How The Prince/Timberlake Beef Started

Now if that ain’t straight to the point, then I don’t know what is. FYI: In case you’re wondering how Prince’s and Timberlake’s past beef started, it was apparently from a joke Prince reportedly craked at a post-Emmy’s party in 2006. Prince was said to have to a jab at Timberlake’s song “SexyBack,” by saying “For whoever is claiming they are bringing sexy back, sexy never left!” Timberlake then dissed him in his 2007 song, “Give It To Me,” with this lyrics:

“We missed you on the charts last week/ Damn, that’s right you wasn’t there/ Now if se-sexy never left, then why is everybody on my s**t/ Don’t hate on me just because you didn’t come up with it.”

Sheila E. Made Timberlake Change Prince Tribute

Justin’s Super Bowl Prince projection was apparently a last minute switch-a-roo, after Sheila E. checked him on social media Saturday, following the revelation that he was going to perform with a hologram of Prince. Timberlake then respectfully called Sheila E. to find an alternative solution to the hologram, which is what the “Glamorous Life” singer/drummer said Prince specifically told her “never” to allow someone to do to him in death.

He Should’ve Invited Janet

Some may disagree with me on this, but I think Timberlake definitely would’ve scored way higher if he’d brought out Janet Jackson for this year’s Super Bowl show. At least that way, what he was lacking in performance, would have been redeemed by shock value. By the way congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles for doing their thang last night.

As we previously reported, Sheila E. was appalled at the idea knowing how the Purple One felt about his image being used this way. She made it crystal clear that Prince would not approve.

“Prince told me don’t ever let anyone do a hologram of me,” Sheila E. wrote in a tweet on Saturday. “Not cool if this happens!”

The legendary percussionist kept her promise to her iconic and reached out to Timberlake. She appealed to his of respect for the fans and shared Prince’s wishes with him. Apparently it worked, because if J.T. was actually going forward with the digitized version, he has now a change of heart. The use of Prince’s hologram ain’t happening. It is understandable that J.T. would want to celebrate Prince, with Minneapolis being the host city for this year’s final pro football match up. After all, he is in Prince country. But reflecting on some shadier moments between Timberlake and Prince, over his 2006 hit single “Sexy Back,” it’s iteresting that Timberlake would wanna perform on stage with a digitized version of him.

A Prince Hologram For Halftime?

You see, word on the Old School curb is that Timberlake is preparing to have a real life looking hologram of Prince perform with him during the Super Bowl halftime show. Timberlake’s team has yet to confirm, nor deny that. However video footage surfaced of him practicing for the show and TMZ revealed that sources -who were inside of the rehearsals at US Bank Stadium- admitted that Justin’s rehearsals included Prince’s hologram as well.

Here’s Why Sheila E. Just Slammed Timberlake

The game between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles is goin’ down in Prince’s hometown, Minneapolis, MN, so that may be why Timberlake will allegedly be paying homage to the icon at the show. According to Sheila E. though, Timberlake is doing Prince dirty, by creating a hologram of him, because it goes completely against Prince’s wishes. She revealed on Saturday, that the one thing Prince asked of her, was to never allow someone to turn him into a hologram when he left this earth. Timberlake will be dropping an album entitled Man of the Woods on Feb. 2 which is two days before Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis. He is also planning his upcoming tour. When he sat down with Lowe, they had to address the elephant in the room. Considering what happened last time during the “family-friendly” broadcast, how did J.T. manage to get invited back?

“To be honest, it wasn’t too much of a conversation,” he said. “It’s just one of those things where you go, like, ‘Yeah, what do you want me to say? WE’RE not going to do that again!'”

Who is this “WE” that Justin speaks of??? Timberlake may or may not be hinting at a reunion onstage, but considering that Ms. Jackson’s third studio album Control was recorded in Minneapolis, it would certainly be appropriate. Produced by music legends Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who once worked with Prince and were members of the band fronted by Morris Day called The Time, Control went on to sell over 10 million copies and earn a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.

Jackson, Jam, Lewis, and Prince own Minneapolis. How could the city host a Super Bowl without them? And how else could Timberlake fit in? He’s trying. For starters, J.T. is slated to have his album listening party at Paisley Park Studios during Super Bowl weekend. Tickets will go for $80 apiece.

So will the Jackson-Timberlake halftime show actually happen? That’s anybody’s guess. But if not, Timberlake wants everybody to know that even though he didn’t talk about it, he and Janet are all good.

“Absolutely, and I don’t know that a lot of people know that,” Timberlake told Lowe. “I don’t think it’s my job to do that because you value the relationships that you do have with people.”

With all of the drama surrounding the NFL this season, celebrities have been apprehensive about accepting invitations to perform at Super Bowl LLI next year. With so many players exercising their First Amendment rights by kneeling during the National Anthem, several NFL team owners have shown their true colors and fans aren’t happy. Because of the harsh judgment and controversy, many African-American entertainers have declined the invitation to perform. But, Joe Jackson claims that isn’t the case where Janet is concerned.

Ready For the Super Bowl?:

According to New York Daily News, Joe Jackson is out here spreading news, claiming his baby girl is planning to accept an invitation to perform at the upcoming Super Bowl. When Justin Timberlake accepted the invitation, fans immediately began wondering if Janet would also be invited back. After her infamous “Nipplegate” incident at the Super Bowl while onstage with Justin, fans wondered if she’d ever take the Super Bowl halftime stage again.

Now, Joe reportedly claims its in the works, according to the publication. In fact, the 89-year-old even claims there has been a discussion about Janet taking the stage with Justin again. “Janet is ready to come back and I think it will happen. The way I bought her up she was made for comebacks and this is no different. Janet always wanted to know she was not banned after what happened before,” he said. “We know conversations have taken place secretly, but no-one is daring to say too much publicly until contracts are signed,” he claimed.

A Ratings Boost?:

It has been reported that the Jackson family patriarch strongly believes his daughter taking the stage would help the NFL’s lackluster ratings this season. “We must not forget this show is about ratings,” he said. “No one publicly is going to discuss that, but the world and media know that the NFL are in a sticky place over fans reactions to their players taking the knee and protesting the national anthem.”

He added, “The audience are expecting a show and I feel that they are expecting to see her too,” he thinks. “It is what they want.”

However, he insists there definitely won’t be another “Nipplegate” scandal. But will the performance really be a good idea considering how fans feel about the Super Bowl and Justin Timberlake’s lack of support when Janet faced controversy after performing with Justin before? Many fans are already voicing concerns about the possibility of Janet performing.

Justin Timberlake Makes Major Announcement

Ever since 2004, both Justin and Janet were banned from ever performing at the Superbowl half time show again…until now. Turns out, only one of them is apparently still banned, that would be Janet Jackson…not Timberlake. You see, earlier today (10-22-17) Justin- along with the help of talk show host, Jimmy Fallon- posted his announcement on Twitter that after 13 years, he has officially been asked to return for a Superbowl half time performance. But y’all already know Janet Damita Jo Jackson’s fans do NOT play when it comes to her!
