Phylicia Rashad’s ex-husband was a far cry from the character, “Mr. Huxtable.” She married this very outspoken guy during the disco era and his group was wild back in the day. Before she jumped the broom with former NFL player, Ahmad Rashad, America’s TV mom was once married to.

Answer: Phylicia was married to Victor Willis, the original lead singer and co-founder of the disco group, VILLAGE PEOPLE. Okay, I’ll just let that one sink in for a minute.

Victor is the original lead singer of the group. From 1978–1980, he and Phylicia Rashad were married. This was during the time when Phylicia was an understudy on the Broadway hit musical Dreamgirls. He also wrote the lyrics for her album, Josephine Superstar. On November 17, 2007 Willis married his real life “Clair Huxtable” when he married his second who is a lawyer and executive.

His persona was the Cop and Navy. The son of a Baptist preacher, Willis developed his singing skills in his father’s church. With training in acting and dance, he went to New York and joined the Negro Ensemble Company.

The Village People quickly rose to the top of the charts with Willis at the helm scoring numerous chart busters such as “Macho Man”, “Y.M.C.A.”, “In the Navy”, and “Go West”. In 1980, as preparations for a Village People feature film, Can’t Stop the Music were under way, Willis left the group. Yes, the former “policeman” and lead vocalist for the enduring disco band left the group because he said it was “too gay.” Although Victor was the main lyricist and vocalist, for songs like “In the Navy,” “Macho Man” and “Go West,” he also eventually became fed up by the homosexual subtext they took on, fearing that catering to a “niche” market would doom the group to failure, he says.

In a prior interview, Victor Willis states:

“Here’s my question: were it not for the ‘appalling homosexual subtext’ in these dance classics, would they have even registered a blip on the RADAR screens of disco dancers? They’re okay songs and all, but their real staying power lies in the pageantry and image that the iconic Village People boasted.”

Willis also was upset because he felt that “In the Navy” was rejected as a theme for the U.S. military because of the group’s gay image and fan-base.

So to sum it up, not all members in the Village People are, nor were actually gay, which is what most of us thought for all of these years. They admitted to playing into the gay culture, although only some of them were in fact gay, but not all.

Willis occasionally made headlines for arrests for drug possession.

Following an arrest in 2006, he was given probation and ordered into rehab at the Betty Ford Clinic. In 2007, following treatment, Willis made his first statement to the press in more than 25 years, saying:

“The nightmare of drug abuse is being lifted from my life… now that the haze of drugs are gone, I’m thinking and seeing clearer now than I have in years… I’m looking forward to living the second part of my life drug-free.”

As for Ms. Rashad, not only is she currently the dean of the College Of Fine Arts at Howard University; she’s continuing to give us those stellar performances just as she did on the now-canceled hit series, “Empire”; and as she will also do in films and stage plays going forward. Get it Ms. Rashad…we see you queen!

Here’s a surprising Old School fun fact we wanted to share with you all, ILOSM family. Remember the kid who played Whitney Houston’s son, “Fletcher,” in The Bodyguard movie? He was a 10 year old youngin’ at the time, but now dude is a 39-year-old man, and we had NO clue his step-mother and his dad are very popular Old School legends!

Aside from starring in The Bodyguard, he had roles in other known films and TV shows as well, including Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Sugar Hill, he was the voice of one of the kids in the animated movie, Bebe’s Kids, and more. He also made a name for himself in TV shows, such as the Disney series Lizzie McGuire and Mackenzie Falls and also in The Secret Life of the American Teenager. All along, he managed to build his own brand without being buried in his famous parents’ shadows.

“FLETCHER” FROM BODYGUARD” ALL GROWN UP

Lil’ “Fletcher” – whose real name is DeVaughn – ain’t so ‘little’ anymore.

After spending much of his childhood as a kid actor, DeVaughn briefly stepped away from acting to devote his time to his studies. He graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a degree in television production and business finance. He also had a brief stint as a mortgage broker, before returning to his passion of acting.

Today, at 39 years old, DeVaughn’s still doing his thing in the acting world. Some of his more recent work include the popular John Singleton created series, “Snowfall,” where DeVaughn has a recurring role as the character, “Kane.”

When it comes to Phylicia Rashad’s Bill-Cosby-tweet controversy and the rumors that her current position as the dean of Howard University was in jeopardy as a result, we knew it was only a matter of time before the ever-so-outspoken R&B legend, Stephanie Mills, was gonna weigh in. And she went in hard.

In case you haven’t been privy to what went down in these social media streets over the past week, former The Cosby Show star, Rashad, caught the attention of many with her supportive tweet on Bill Cosby’s release from prison. On Wednesday, Phylicia Rashad tweeted, “FINALLY!!!! A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected!”, along with a photo of Cosby.

Soon after Rashad’s tweet went viral, many supporters stood up for her; while her opposers called for her termination from her newly appointed role as dean of Howard University, where she is an alumni.

Howard University initially released a statement stating, “Survivors of sexual assault will always be our first priority. … While Dean Rashad has acknowledged in her follow-up tweet that victims must be heard and believed, her initial tweet lacked sensitivity towards survivors of sexual assault. .. Personal positions of University leadership do not reflect Howard University’s policies.”

Though Howard seemed to still support Rashad, rumors have since surfaced of her possible termination, yet have not been confirmed by either party. This is where Stephanie Mills enters the convo’…

The “Feel Good” songstress didn’t bite her tongue one bit when she addressed Howard University on the ‘termination’ rumors. She did so in a I-wish-they-WOULD-try-Phylicia-Rashad type of way. In her online post, Mills called out Howard U. for accepting thousands of dollars in funding from Bill Cosby throughout the years, basically stating that if they attempt to fire Phylicia over her Cosby tweet, then they should equally ‘attempt’ to give back every dime (as in millions of them) Cosby has ever given to their establishment as well:

In addition to Debbie’s admiration for their Mother, her big sis’ has long held that same adoration for mama Vivian as well. In an 80’s throwback interview with Bill Boggs TV (video above), the “Mrs. Claire Huxtable” actress proclaimed:

“I will not raise my children differently than my mother raised me. … My mother gave us aphorisms to learn as children.”

There are two lessons that stuck with The Cosby Show matriarch the most:

“One is, ‘The inner reality creates the outer form.’ I learned this when I was in grade school, I was very young. And the other is, ‘The Universe bears no ill to me, I bear no ill to it,'” said Phylicia Rashad.

By now we all know Chadwick Boseman as the star of Marvel’s first Black cast in the record breaking film, Black Panther. However, Chadwick is making sure he shares the spotlight with some of the people responsible for helping to hone his craft- Phylicia Rashad and Denzel Washington. The two legends not only helped the brotha out when nobody knew his name, but if it weren’t for them, we may have never known Chad as ‘the king of Wakanda’ today.

How Phylicia Rashad Helped When Boseman Was Broke

Chadwick revealed, in his 2018 Rolling Stone interview, that when he was a broke Howard University college student, he was blessed with an opportunity to be taught by Phylicia Rashad. While there, he said “She (Rashad) pushed for us,” by encouraging him and a few of his classmates to apply for some highly sought after acting courses through Oxford University’s foreign exchange program.

The good news was that Chadwick got accepted into the program…but the way his bank account was set up- as a broke student- he could not afford the expensive Oxford tuition. Seeing a true talent in Chadwick and his classmates, Phylicia stepped in to make sure those young people wouldn’t miss that opportunity to soar. Here’s what Chadwick told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show:

“I did an exchange [program] while I was at Howard…a group of us….and Phylicia Rashad basically taught a class once a week while we were at Howard. …Then she wanted us to do an exchange [program] and …I you know I didn’t have money to pay for this. So she got a few of her friends together and …they paid for us to go.”

How Denzel Stepped Up For Chadwick

At that time, Chadwick had no clue which celebrity friends Rashad had gotten to pay his tuition and it wasn’t until after he’d completed the exchange program, that he found out it was Denzel:

“I didn’t know at first. When I came back [from Oxford to Howard], I got a beneficiary letter and it said ‘Denzel Washington paid for you.’ And I was like ‘WHAT?!!'”

After later learning Denzel helped him, Chadwick decided to keep it on the low throughout his entire career, until now, but he had a very good reason for that. He never wanted Denzel to think that he was trying to exploit his name to boost his own career:

“So I never wanted to ever say that [publicly], until I met him….I was asked about it in that Rolling Stone interview and I was like, ‘You know I think I could say it now…I made it to the point where he’s [Denzel] not gonna think I’m trying to get something from him by saying it.'”

Boseman still decided not to reveal who in his Rolling Stone Interview, because he hadn’t yet met Denzel to thank him first. Then his opportunity came…
