She is none other than…*drumroll please*…

The beautiful, late singer, Phyllis Hyman. As you know, “Russell Huxtable’s” real name is Earle Hyman, and he and Phyllis are second cousins. They kept this old school fun fact kind of quiet back then, although I’m not sure why. Maybe they wanted to each build a name for themselves without having to be in the shadow of the other. Whatever the reason, we still thought it was pretty cool old school info to know.

Some of you may recall how “Russell Huxtable” used to oftentimes quote Shakespeare at random whenever he was trying to give some of his wise advice. Turns out, he was no stranger to Shakespeare at all and that the Cosby writers used to write those lines specifically with Earle in mind. They knew he knew Shakespeare like the back of his hand. That’s what he’d studied since the age of 13 and performed over 500 times in theatrical plays. He developed a huge following in Norway because of this and even earned the prestigious Medal of St. Olav for his theatrical stage work there.

Earle Hyman also spent so many years in Norway after The Cosby Show, that he became a fluent speaker of the Norwegian language. Below, he briefly talks about how Shakespeare became his ticket up out of the hood.

The beloved Phyllis Hyman revealed in her book, “Strength of a Woman,” why she and “Lean on Me” singer, Bill Withers, once had a very public and heated argument.

Ms. Hyman was a beautiful and incredibly talented woman, but when you got on her last nerve (like they say down South), she had NO problem giving you a piece of her mind at the drop of a dime. This was the case one night on tour with Phyllis, Bill Withers and singer, Regina Belle.

Phyllis said that she and Bill somehow got into a loud, heated argument backstage in front of Regina Belle and others, and that she didn’t hesitate to throw a verbal jab at him when she said this to him:

‘Come on motherf*cker…what are you gonna do, beat me the way you beat Denise Nicholas?!’

Ouch! Now of course, Bill was not by any means going to do that to her, but Phyllis admittedly was just making sure she hit him where it hurts, so to speak.

Drama With His Ex, Denise Nicholas That Hampered His Career

For those who don’t know, Denise Nicholas is the actress best known for her role in “In The Heat of the Night” and Bill Withers was dead smack in the middle of a media frenzy, as rumors were spreading like wildfire after his divorce from Denise. Denise and Bill were allegedly involved in a really stormy relationship and there were rumors that there was a domestic violence incident, although that was never proven as far as we know. So needless to say, Bill was pissed and I guess he learned that day that nobody better not EVER get on Phyllis’ bad side because homegirl didn’t play that.

Bill was typically a very laid-back and logical kind of guy though, so it must have been pretty bad to get him all hyped up like that. What Bill eventually said about the incident was that people, like Phyllis and a bunch of other folks, were giving him so much backlash about those domestic violence rumors, that shortly after that argument he isolated himself from the music industry. The reputation he had acquired caused him to not tour for seven years, and he was only able to record 9 albums within a 15-year span. He explained why below:

“People chose her (Denise Nicholas’) side….That’s all I could make (at the time), I didn’t make any albums between 1978 and 1985 because I couldn’t get any music past anybody’s desk at CBS Records.”

Wow, this was like a scene from Empire. I could see “Cookie” (Taraji P. Henson) blurting out something similar to what Phyllis said, to “Lucious” (Terence Howard) in front of everyone at an ‘Empire Records’ meeting.

On the serious note, I hope Phyllis and Bill were eventually able to shake hands and forgive each other. Either way, it’s still a good thing that they each graced us with timeless classics. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from all of this, it’s that Phyllis didn’t take no mess!

Now Angela was a sweetheart about the situation and never tried to go at it with Phyllis, she was always nice to her.

In terms of the comparison between the two, their ballads are some of the best ballads ever created. Angela’s “I Try” is a true classic. She didn’t try to over-sing the song, or compete with the music, she just set in the track and let the music guide her. The lyrics Angela wrote for her songs as a whole all felt like perfect matches with her music. Phyllis’ music was timeless to me. “Living All Alone” was one of my favorite songs by her and I think her style of singing was totally different from Angela’s.

I’m not going to lie, when I look at them, from a physical standpoint, I see similarities in terms of them both being beautiful women, but other than that, that’s it. As far as artists, these two are very different to me. If I had to choose between these two phenomenal artists I think I would go with Phyllis Hyman for her vocal skills and her delivery of the songs; and Angela Bofill for her ability to not just create a song, but to create a mood through a combination of her writing and delivery. So in other words, I’m saying that it’s a draw…I can’t choose just one because in my opinion they both contributed something very different to soul music. Which one would you choose?
