ILOSM family, in case y’all haven’t heard…Queen Latifah has taken on one of her favorite roles yet: being a mother to her son. In recent years, the Queen’s been loving her journey to motherhood, as well as discussing her desire to start a family, and why she chooses to keep her son away from the spotlight.

A Desire for Family

While Latifah is known for keeping her personal life on the low, she had previously openly expressed her desire to start a family. In a 2016 interview, she shared her readiness to become a mother and hinted at the possibility of a future with a little one:

“I think I’m ready… You’ll see when I’m lugging the baby on the hip that there is actually a youngin’ around here.” – Queen Latifah

For Latifah, the timing had to be right. She acknowledged that she’s a ‘late bloomer’ in some aspects of her life, and wanted to ensure that she had taken care of everything before taking on the role of motherhood.

A Lifelong Dream Fulfilled

Queen Latifah’s dreams of becoming a mother finally came true when she and her life partner — choreographer, Eboni Nichols — welcomed their now 4-year-old son, Rebel, into the world in 2019. Eboni reportedly carried their child during pregnancy. The birth of 53-year-old Queen’s first child marked a significant milestone in her life, and she confessed she wanted to have a big family, bracing motherhood wholeheartedly:

“I’ve always envisioned myself with a big family… I kind of needed to grow and mature and get everything kind of taken care of with everything before I was able to really deal with it.” – Queen Latifah

A Natural at Being a Mom

Before becoming a mother to her little mini-me, Latifah had plenty of practice in the parenting department. She shared a heartwarming story of helping two women with babies at the airport, showcasing her natural nurturing instincts. It was a glimpse into the kind of mother she would become.

Keeping Her Son’s Life Private

A Caregiver’s Love

The “Set It Off” mute’s mother is none other than Janet MacLachlan. Remember her? She was the actress who appeared on the “Florida Gets a Job” episode of Good Times when Gary Coleman snatched her wig off of her head and she yelled, “Oh! I’ve never been so embarrassed in my life?!!” That scene was CLASSIC and who would have ever thought that her lil’ girl would end up being “Cleo’s” girlfriend some twenty plus years later?!!

Janet also starred in several other roles, such as an episode of the series, I Spy, where she appeared alongside Bill Cosby as one of the prettiest double agents we’d ever seen. After starring in a few more projects such as television series Once and Again, NYPD Blue, JAG, the films, Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story (1996) and Tear It Down (1997) and of course Set It Off, she pretty much retreated from the spotlight and lives a quiet non-celebrity type of life. But she’ll never be able to hide the fact that she was the woman who played the lesbian mute girlfriend of Queen Latifah in Set It Off, nor should she want to – her role added a great dynamic to that ‘90s cult classic. Most of us remember when rapper/actress, Queen Latifah, played the hell outta her “Cleo” character in Set It Off. The way her lesbian character busted her guns during the bank robberies and kissed her mute girlfriend, was one of the most convincing roles in movie history. In fact, it was almost a lil’ too convincing and kicked off what would become a never-ending rumor mill of real-life lesbian allegations for Queen.

Although Latifah has never confirmed, nor denied, the homosexual rumors (nor the several seemingly affectionate photos of herself in public with females at times), many would argue that Latifah confirming she’s a lesbian would be about as “shocking” as Kim Kardashian ‘confirming’ she likes Black dudes with money — an allegation Kim’s never denied nor confirmed either. But I digress…

Point is! Queen Latifah had a problem playing her “Cleo” role, and here’s what she revealed about that in a prior  interview.

Although many of us enjoyed watching Queen Latifah kill it with her Cleo role (even the way Latifah “died” as “Cleo” in the film was profound), what we didn’t know at that time, was that it was the toughest role for her to portray, according to what Latifah revealed to actress, Tracy Ellis Ross, who interviewed her for In Style magazine:

TER: Were there any career decisions that were particularly hard to make?

Queen Latifah: When I got the role of amateur bank robber Cleo Sims in Set It Off, I sat down with my younger siblings and told them, “Listen, I’m playing a gay character. Your classmates might tease you or say negative things about it. But I’m doing it because I believe I can bring positive attention to the gay African-American community, and I believe that I can do a great job as an actor.” They understood, and when those things inevitably happened in school, they were OK with it.

So as you can see, the role wasn’t tough for Latifah because it was a lesbian role…it was tough because she was worried about affecting her family with it. This again, will probably drive those rumor mills into overdrive, yet again. I can just see it now: ‘Latifah is comfortable with lesbian Cleo character because she IS “Cleo”‘…

Quite frankly, we, here at I Love Old School Music, love Latifah – lesbian, straight, bi, or try-sexual (a word we learned from Tevin Campbell’s interview). She has, and always will be, one of the most versatile actresses in the game. And to witness how far she’s come with her multi-talented career – ever since her 1989 “Ladies First” days – deserves a round of applause! The only problem I have in all of this, is that in my opinion, Latifah is just as gifted as her fellow rapper-turned-actor, Will Smith, but she has yet to earn $20 million-per-movie acting gigs…that’s the real controversy…not whether, or not she’s a lesbian…just saying. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Salt-N-Pepa will be in effect on a TV screen near you, in 2020 to be exact. According to Rolling Stone, Lifetime network has green-lighted the project.

We See You Queen Latifah!

Executive produced by non-other than “Ms. U.N.I.T.Y.” Queen Latifah herself and her Flavor Unit Production Company.

The Salt-N-Pepa miniseries traverses the lives of Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton, as they go from nursing school students to entering the world of hip-hop and rap and their rise and successes, which includes becoming the first female rap act to go platinum. The miniseries will feature a slew of their hits, including “Let’s Talk About Sex,” “What a Man,” “Shoop” and “Push It,” among others. James and Denton will serve as executive producers alongside Jesse Collins, and Flavor Unit’s Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere.

No word if Salt-N-Pepa’s DJ Spinderella will be featured in the miniseries, but that seems quite obvious.

Salt-N-Pepa is not the only musical group to be on Lifetime next year either. A popular gospel group will receive their own Lifetime biopic.

Queen Latifah Reveals Why She Stands By Jussie Smollett

It’s still a total head scratcher. Jussie Smollett is a handsome, talented and popular entertainer. So why would he stage a racist and homophobic attack on himself? Queen Latifah is also having a hard time understanding this too. The Oscar-nominated actress does not believe that the evidence against Smollett is enough to prove him guilty. Latifah told Yahoo News that until she sees “definitive” proof that the Empire actor concocted his attack on January 29, she will “go with him.”

“Until somebody can show me some proof otherwise, I’m going with him. Cause the guy I’ve seen has always seen has always been someone who cares about people, who cares about others, and who’s very kind and who’s always been cool and sweet. And that’s just the guy I know, Latifah said.”

Definitive Proof

Queen Latifah also added: “So until I can see some definitive proof — which I haven’t seen yet — then, you know, I gotta go with him until I see otherwise.” Smollett is currently facing a felony charge of disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false report. The actor/musician claims he was jumped by two homophobic, racist assailants in Chicago.

But authorities have since dismissed the attack and say the so called assailants were known to Smollett. Police confirmed in a press conference that brothers Abel and Ola Osundairo were hired by Smollett to rough him up.  It is a charge that the actor strenuously denies the charges. Latifah, who has appeared on an episode of Empire with the star in the past, said she did not know what to make of the whole debacle. “Everything that’s happened since then has been, who knows.”

A Long Battle With Her Heart:

In September, the “Girl’s Trip” star announced that she loved being her mother’s caregiver as her mother battled with heart failure for over 13 years. The women had an incredible bond and through caring for her mother, Queen Latifah’s love grew as she shared with PEOPLE magazine the huge amount of respect she had for her mother.

I’ve just learned how much you can love a person and just how strong my mother is, Queen shared of her mother Rita Owens during a sit-down with PEOPLE Now. I’ve come to respect her in ways you can’t even imagine.

When Ms. Rita Owens learned of her condition, she was determined to live her life. A pillar of strength, Rita Owens gathered Queen Latifah and the rest of her family members to educate them on how they could help her manage her life. After learning in 2006 that her mother was diagnosed with health failure, Queen placed heart health as a priority.

My mom is stronger than anyone I’ve ever known. Growing up, when life got hard her strength helped pull us through, the actress said in a PSA for the American Heart Association. In 2013, Owens was diagnosed with scleroderma, an incurable autoimmune disease that caused scar tissue to build up in her lungs, requiring her to be on oxygen 24/7.

Rising Above:

To educate others, in 2015, Queen Latifah and her mother teamed up with American Heart Association’s Rise Above Heart Failure effort to pay homage to the 6 million Americans living with heart failure as well as they wanted to encourage others to prioritize their health. To support her mother, Queen took “red steps” by changing her diet as well as exercising. It was a wake up call for Queen and she stepped up to the plate. Being her mother’s champion, Queen Latifah shared with Essence how she ensured that her mother ate fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy snacks. To help her mother maintain a low sodium diet, they cooked at home a lot. Queen was committed to making her life and the life of her mother as healthy as possible.

The notion of heart disease being the number one killer of women is something we sometimes forget, Latifah  shared with Essence. Latifah got her own wake-up call on taking care of our hearts. My trainer, Jeanette Jenkins, said to me once, If we could see our bodies from the inside the way we see it from the outside, we would take much better care of ourselves.
