*SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO* Howard Hewett tried his hardest to be polite about his experiences with groupies and such, but sometimes you just gotta tell it like it is…and that’s what he ultimately did. When asked whether or not he, as a newly engaged man, still gets tested by groupies, Howard (66), said ‘yes’ and that pretty much no environment is groupie-free for entertainers. He also said his fiancee’ understands.

Seeing him break down the differences between the Christian groupies sitting in the church and the R&B groupies bumpin’ n’ grindin’ at his shows was interesting I must admit. He also touched on pastors who fly high class on private jets and a few other topics, including if whether or not he, as a Christian man, breaks a very prominent Christian principle.

Although Stephanie and Shalamar’s, Jeffrey Daniel, divorced years ago, we wanted to share excerpts from an Ebony Magazine interview Mills did soon after they’d split, because the honesty and pain she revealed about their love, still resonates today. Stephanie and Jeffrey split in 1982, but didn’t officially divorce until ’83, after just three years of marriage. Their marriage was long-rumored to be a rocky one.

Mills’ Biggest Regret About Marriage To Daniel

Stephanie says that one of biggest regrets ” is that I didn’t have a baby for my husband. God knows I tried, but it’s something that just never happened. He wanted a son, and I’d still like to have it for him.”

When asked if having a baby for Daniel would have ‘saved their marriage’ at that time, Mills replied:

“Probably, I think it might help,” stated Mills.

She then addressed how her and Daniel’s short marriage unfortunately fit into the celeb’ marriage stereotype:

“I suppose that suggests that ‘show business marriages’ don’t have very good chances of surviving,” Stephanie says. “Both partners are so much in the public eye all the time and when you add that to all the other problems that come up in a ‘normal’ marriage, the picture’s not very bright. Maybe Jeffrey and I will have to do like some other couples- divorce, give ourselves a little time and space, then marry again. Maybe in-between we’ll learn all the lessons a couple has to learn in order to make a marriage survive,” Mills stated at the time of their separation.

Her Biggest Insecurity That Jeffrey Daniel Helped Eliminate

The beautiful 4’9″ songstress also confessed one of her biggest insecurities and how Jeffrey helped her to overcome it, despite their drama:

“Some people might find this hard to believe, but my marriage to Jeffrey Daniel was the greatest thing that could’ve happened to me. See, I’ve gone through some real changes at various times of my life, but because of Jeffrey, I’m now very happy with myself. All my life I tried to be the best I could be and I tried to look the best I could look. I always knew there are no perfect people in the world, but I had some problems about being a short person, and I suppose every girl wonders if she’s as attractive as someone else. As an entertainer, I know society has a thing about beauty. People are into that tall-pretty-girl-with-long-hair thing, you know. … I used to feel intimidated when I was around those gorgeous ladies, but I don’t feel that way anymore.”

When asked if therapy also helped her overcome her short complex,  Mills adamantly gave all props to Jefferey about this:

“Oh, no. It was Jeffrey Daniel,” she says. “He never stopped telling me that he loved me the way I was. He never tried to change me, and he told me I didn’t have to always wear high-heel shoes, for example. He told me, ‘Stephanie, if I’d wanted a tall woman I’d have married one. So don’t wear high heels for me. I love you in sneakers, barefooted, any way you want to be.’ He meant that and it went a long way in helping me change what I’d thought of myself at times. Now I think I’m tall as anyone else, I think I look good as anyone else.”

Overcoming Their Painful Divorce

Stephanie also stated she eventually realized that then 22 year old Jeffrey was too young at that time, to be a ‘responsibly’ married man. Although their marriage was plagued by cheating rumors and rumors of hostile arguments and/or altercations, she admitted their split took a painful toll on her:

“When Jeffrey and I first separated, I thought my whole world had collapsed. I didn’t think I was going to make it…. Here I was in this big house and I’d never really been alone. But let me tell you something. One day I got  up and went to the mirror and looked at myself and said, ‘Now look here, Stephanie Mills, you’re out here in California, you’re alone now, and YOU…ARE…GOING…TO…MAKE IT.

Damn…guess their union unfortunately wasn’t meant to be. We respect Ms. Mills for sharing her vulnerabilities with the world though.

Stephanie Mills has one of the most powerful voices in soul music history and she also probably has one of the most short lived marriages to a fellow R&B singer in soul music history as well.

In 1980, the “Power of Love” singer jumped the broom with a popular R&B singer of the late 70s and 80s era. At that time, some of their family and friends hated the fact that they said “I do” to each other, but Stephanie and her man were determined to make their love and their marriage work. If you’re a fan of old school R&B music, you know her ex-husband very well, even if you may not have known that they were once in wedded bliss at the height of their careers.

A SHALAMAR SINGER IS MILLS’ EX-HUSBAND!

Now I know what some of you may be thinking: ‘Wasn’t Jeffrey in a long term relationship with his fellow Shalamar member, Jody Watley, during that time? The answer is ‘yes,’ BUT the answer is also ‘no.’

While it is true that Jeffrey and Jody were seriously dating in the late 70s, things went sour between them.  So they broke up and both of them moved on with their love-lives, but Shalamar stayed together. That’s when Jeffrey met Stephanie.

Stephanie Mills Reveals Why Marriage To Jeffrey Daniels Fell Apart

Jeffrey and Stephanie married only a few short months after they were introduced by a mutual friend and remember we mentioned that some of their family and friends hated that they were married? Mills revealed why in a past interview with Ebony Magazine. See the excerpts below:

Stephanie Mills:”My marriage was plagued by controversies and pressures from the moment Jeffrey and I decided to become husband and wife. Let’s just say there have been some forces -some people actually- determined from the very beginning to keep us apart, and when we went ahead and married, they did everything possible to break us up.”

SM: “Its’s no secret that my family didn’t want me to get married. My parents knew that I had made up my mind to do it, so I had their blessing, and my mother was helping plan the wedding. But others in my family thought it would be better for me to remain home. They’ve always wanted to keep me close by and protect me. But I was a full grown woman when I decided to marry, and I knew it was time for me to start making my own decisions about my life.”

EbonyMag: So what did you do?

SM: “I packed up my things, left my family [she had bought a 27 room house in New York’s suburban Westchester County for them], and moved in with my sister Judy in Los Angeles until I married and found my own place.

Stephanie and Jeffrey were married for over a year, before Stephanie filed for divorce in September of 1981. Word on the Old School curb has always been that one of Stephanie’s sisters seriously wanted her to hold out for her ex-boyfriend, Michael Jackson (yes THE MJ…they were a couple back in the day), and eventually marry him one day.

There were also rumors that on Stephanie Mills’ and Jeffrey Daniel’s wedding day, one of her sisters attempted to pull Stephanie out of the car, just before she and Jeffrey were about to be whisked away into marital bliss. But that was never confirmed, although Stephanie did admit to terminating her working relationship with her sister, Audrey, around the same time.

In that same Ebony interview, Stephanie also said that Jeffrey’s friends didn’t like her, although she didn’t know why.

Bobby Brown is one helluva performer…there’s no disputing that. From his childhood days with New Edition, to the climax of his solo career, Bobby B. has never let his fans down. In most cases, Bobby’s talk of his talent goes unquestioned, but a recent claim he’s made has fans scratching their heads. Apparently, Bobby is taking credit for teaching Michael Jackson how to moonwalk. Yes, you read that right. Bobby’s taking credit for Michael’s signature dance move. For most MJ fans, the claim probably seems unbelievable, but Bobby recently shared details about how it all went down. You won’t believe what Bobby had to say.

Where It All Began:

When Bobby Brown appeared on The Cipher, he had an interesting conversation with the show’s host Shawn Setaro. The “My Prerogative” singer recalled his humble beginnings dancing at Orchard Park in Boston. He claims he was the first one there to do the Moonwalk and he introduced the East Coast to the big dance craze. “I had a few moves that was just super,” he explained. “Plus, I was the first one in Orchard Park to do the moonwalk. So, the moonwalk was one of my signature moves. Nobody. I had brought it up from down South. It was something that just killed the game once I brought it up the East Coast.”

Although the Moonwalk has always been associated with Michael Jackson when he debuted it during his iconic Motown 25 performance, Bobby claims the signature dance was his long before MJ did it. He even went a step further and revealed when he actually taught Michael how to moonwalk.

Dancin’ With MJ:

According to Bobby, he and Michael had the opportunity to dance together when New Edition received an invitation to the legendary performer’s home. Of course, performers can only sit around for so long before they start doin’ what they love. Before long, the guys were on their feet dancing “this big room with mirrors.” Bobby claims that’s where he taught MJ how to moonwalk. “Actually, I was the one that taught Michael how to do it,” he said. “We was poppin,’ he was watchin’ us pop,” he said. “He saw me do the moonwalk. And he [asked], ‘What is that?’ And I did it again. He just watched it, and he just started doin’ it.”

Shalamar’s Jeffrey Daniel Claimed That Title First

Now…we have nothin’ but love for Bobby B. around here, but we MUST point out the person who has long ago taken credit for teaching MJ the Moonwalk. That person is Michael’s former choreographer and legendary Shalamar singer, Jeffrey Daniel. Here is Jeffrey’s recollection of teaching MJ the Moonwalk in the early 80’s:

Via NPR: [Jeffrey Daniel] says that [Michael] Jackson came to Disneyland with “little” Janet Jackson in the early 1980s. “They stood on the wing of the stage and they watched me dance. […] And then I got a call from him. He said that he would like to get together and … go over the dance moves and that.” Daniel says even Jackson didn’t get the moonwalk right way. “No one” does, he says.”It’s like the matrix, everybody falls the first jump,” Daniel says. […] Daniel says he was struck by Jackson’s athleticism and entertaining ability when he was a child and a teenager. “And then to see him take what we were doing and then take it into his arena — take it into the next stratosphere — it was like, ‘Wow,'” Daniel says.

We were going through some info that was sent to us regarding the existence of two separate Shalamar groups now- one with Jody Watley; and another with Howard Hewett and Jeffrey Daniel.

The first thing that came to our minds was ‘Why are Jody, Howard and Jeffrey (the original Shalamar members) doing that?’ We did a lil’ fact finding on this and found out that a while back, Jody Watley had a whole lot to say about the real deal behind their break up and why they were never able to reunite. She wanted to set the record straight because she said that the whole story was never fully covered in the media, but that their fans deserve to know. One thing’s for sure: she isn’t holding anything back!

Update: Before we get into what Jody said about all the drama, we want to give you this quick update. After this story was published, Jody Watley sent us this message to share with her fans (facebook.com/jodywatleyofficial):

“This was all a long time ago – right now I’m focused on my current project PARADISE and having legally acquired the Shalamar trademark and reloading the group for a new era (while celebrating and respecting the past) we’ve already played to sold out audiences showcasing the songs people love from Shalamar AND Jody Watley!! Life and business goes on! Get updated, my love to all I Love Old School Music.”

Thanks for giving us that update Jody. Okay people, now you can read the unfortunate ugly truths behind this Shalamar break-up:

Jody on the shady business tactics that started happening:
“Dick Griffey [the owner of Shalamar’s record label, Solar Records] mentioned that he had given Howard a million dollar advance and I thought ‘Well finally, I guess that was true because that was a rumor toward the end [of our group’s years together] that Dick Griffey was cutting deals with Howard. One of my best friends at the time, Jermaine Stewart…was a backing vocalist for Shalamar when we toured and there were a couple of instances where Dick Griffey had arranged for Howard to do shows as Shalamar but we [Jody and Jeffrey] weren’t invited. And it’s things like that when Dick Griffey says “some tension,” well that was definitely one to cause some tension. [That] started to change what was already a shaky situation anyway.”

Jody on the physical and verbal abuse from her then boyfriend and Shalamar member, Jefferey Daniel. Stephanie Mills was also part of the reason for it.
Jody said this had nothing to do with the group’s breakup, but it caused even more tension because she said that the verbal and physical abuse she endured from Jeffrey was too much. She said they looked like a “cute couple” on the outside but the reality was that it wasn’t like that and that there was a very “dark side” to it that people didn’t know.

Jody also said this about when Jeffrey started dating, and eventually married Stephanie Mills:
“I felt so upset during the Stephanie Mills era because he [Jeffrey] was working my nerves and rubbing it in my face and so yeah, it was out of control. The tension was so high during that era that we tore up some dressing rooms. Sometimes we’d be doing choreography [during our shows] and we’d be hitting and kicking each other within the frame of the choreography and it would escalate to the point that there were a couple of times that we would leave the stage and run into the dressing room…and it would be on. Thinking about it now I can’t even recognize myself…but that’s how it was during that era. It was a mess…LOL. As we fast forward into now, into the future and I look back at the past, it was a mess. It was a teenage mess, it was a love mess, it was just…it was a mess. It was a lot of drama, a lot of tension and a learning experience.

But anyway the blessings of the journey of time is that I saw Stephanie Mills a few years ago and we were both performing at a party, and I heard someone say “Hey Waddles” which was something a few people called me back then and I looked and it was her and we hugged and we talked about having kids and just life and what we were doing and everything and so it was good…the blessing of time.”
