Upon first glance at Tyka Nelson’s story, some would probably think that she was a little off of her rocker. “I relapsed once, but I’ve been clean for three months now,” she said. “It’s the longest I’ve been sober and drug-free in years.”

All too often we hear about siblings of superstars, who are in really jacked up positions in their lives, while their celebrity sibling is simultaneously soaring in their careers. Via ET: Prince’s tragic death shocked the world earlier this year, but the musician’s sister, Tyka Nelson, told ET she expected it. “It wasn’t hard at all,” Nelson said about coming to grips with Prince’s death. “It was a two-word phone call: ‘He’s gone.’ And I knew who he meant. I hung up the phone. An employee of Prince called. I have been preparing for two years, so I knew that it was coming.”

According to Nelson, Prince hinted to her that his life was winding down. “He said it a couple of years ago: ‘I’ve done everything that I’ve come to do,'” she recalled. “I was crushed for about two years.”

Morris Day of The Time once did an interview to speak about his friend, Prince, after he’d passed away on April 21, 2016, from a reported overdose of fentanyl. Let’s pause to let the realization that it’s been over five years sink in. Seems like it wasn’t that long ago that we were hit with the sad news of the icon’s shocking death. During Morris Day’s Rolling Stone interview, he shared some interesting info about his last visit with Prince.

Morris Day Describes Meeting w/Prince 2 Months Before His Death

There was one thing that really stood out about Morris’s interview and that is what he described about his last visit to chill out with Prince at his Paisley Park home. Two things made him think something wasn’t right with Prince, but he couldn’t really piece it together at that time:

RS: Did Prince seem any different to you before he died?

Morris Day: Well, at the time, I thought nothing of it. But in retrospect, I thought maybe something wasn’t right. I thought, he looked thin, even though he always looks fragile. After he passed away, I just wondered if he knew something that he wasn’t telling me. I just felt like he knew. Like he knew that something wasn’t right. Maybe he said it in just being adamant about seeing us again. Maybe that was a sign in itself.

Their Past Tensions

Many of you may recall the past tensions that existed between Prince and The Time band members…it lasted for several decades (even into recent years). So although they loved each other like family (FYI: contrary to popular belief Prince and Morris were not blood relatives, they were just friends who met in high school), there was a lot of time missed between them. But the fact that Prince was so adamant about jammin’ with the group again, combined with what Morris said about Prince’s fragile weight, does make us wonder if Prince really did know he was approaching his final days, and simply wanted to have one last jam session with the cats he started out with.

Morris Day: “When we decided to go into the [Doggy Style Records] studio, he [Snoop] was like, “Give me a little time and I promise you it will be a classic.” We were a couple months into the project when Prince passed away. So, we’d been working already and that’s when [“Over That Rainbow”] came. It took me a while to decide if I wanted to put my emotions on the line in a song like that.” [Why?] “I was in denial like a lot of people probably were. I had just been at Paisley Park like two months prior [because] Prince wanted us to come a party with him. … When I found out it was really him [that died] it didn’t really hit me. It took a while to sink in.”

Morris Day doesn’t stand alone in his assumption that Prince may have known it was his last days. In March (2017) Tyka Nelson, Prince’s sister said the same thing.

Prince’s childhood friend and one of his very first band members, Andre Cymone, also revealed that Prince, whom he hadn’t seen in a while, contacted him and was adamant about having him stop by Paisley Park months before his death, just to vibe and have a jam session like they used to do back in the day. Unfortunately, Andre never got a chance to do that before Prince died.

Little Known Facts About Prince’s Sister And Her Hardships

Here’s a little background info about Tyka. As we previously reported, she revealed her past battles with drug and alcohol addiction. She confessed to having self-esteem issues that date back to when she was a young girl. She was very close to Prince when they were younger (he even paid for her rehab treatment at Hazelden in 2003) and like we said, she grew tired of living in her big brother’s shadow.

“For a long time I didn’t want to live.  I’m very quiet,” Tyka says.

“In the beginning, my brother would play the piano and I would sing, because that’s what my mom and dad did. And then along the way somebody teased me for even thinking that I could get up there. That stayed with me, and I became very shy.”

“My world was different from theirs,” she says. “I was the overweight kid who didn’t have a boyfriend. I listened to other people say, ‘You’re ugly, you’re fat, you’re stupid,’ and I believed it. My brother, he just thought I was crazy.”

Around the time Prince signed his first record deal, his younger sister ran away from home. She arrived in Los Angeles with a knapsack full of lyrics, but didn’t find success as a singing star. All too often we hear about siblings of superstars, who are in really jacked up positions in their lives, while their celebrity sibling is simultaneously soaring in their careers. It’s typically sparked by watching their sibling(s) reach heights that they will never reach, and living in their siblings shadow is sometimes too much for them to bear.

As far as we know, up until Prince’s last days, Tyka Nelson was still trying to nurture her singing career, without the help of her big brother, who clearly loved her very much. She is 61 years young and has released six albums throughout her career.

Tyka has reportedly turned her life around, and is a devoted Christian as well. Her ambition to still keep striving for her goals and for her sobriety is very inspiring. Not sure what the future holds for her singing career, but we wish her the best with it.

Morris Day of The Time did an interview with Rolling Stone to speak about his friend, Prince’s, passing in April 21, 2017. As you all know, Prince passed away from an accidental overdose of the prescription pain med, fentanyl on April 21, 201. In a heart-wrenching interview, Morris Day detailed his last conversation with Prince at the late icon’s home.

Morris Day Describes Meeting  With Prince 2 Months Before His Death

There was one thing that really stood out about Morris’ interview and that is what he described about his last visit to chill out with Prince at his Paisley Park home. Two things made him think something wasn’t right with Prince, but he couldn’t really piece it together at that time:

RS: Did Prince seem any different to you before he died?

Morris Day: Well, at the time, I thought nothing of it. But in retrospect, I thought maybe something wasn’t right. I thought, he looked thin, even though he always looks fragile. After he passed away, I just wondered if he knew something that he wasn’t telling me. I just felt like he knew. Like he knew that something wasn’t right. Maybe he said it in just being adamant about seeing us again. Maybe that was a sign in itself.

Their Past Tensions

Many of you may recall the past tensions that existed between Prince and The Time band members…it lasted for several decades (even into recent years). So although they loved each other like family (FYI: contrary to popular belief Prince and Morris were not blood relatives, they were just friends who met in high school), there was a lot of time missed between them. But the fact that Prince was so adamant about jammin’ with the group again, combined with what Morris said about Prince’s fragile weight, does make us wonder if Prince really did know he was approaching his final days, and simply wanted to have one last jam session with the cats he started out with.

Morris Day’s Touching New Tribute Song To Prince & Why He was In Denial

Morris also revealed that he released a new tribute song titled, “Over That Rainbow,” on The Time’s new album, which is executive produced by Snoop Dogg and released on Doggystyle Records. He’s just released a video for his Prince tribute, titled, “Over That Rainbow”:

Morris Day: “When we decided to go into the [Doggy Style Records] studio, he [Snoop] was like, “Give me a little time and I promise you it will be a classic.” We were a couple months into the project when Prince passed away. So, we’d been working already and that’s when [“Over That Rainbow”] came. It took me a while to decide if I wanted to put my emotions on the line in a song like that.” [Why?] “I was in denial like a lot of people probably were. I had just been at Paisley Park like two months prior [because] Prince wanted us to come a party with him. … When I found out it was really him [that died] it didn’t really hit me. It took a while to sink in.”

Prince’s Sister & Childhood Friend Made Similar Claims

Morris Day doesn’t stand alone in his assumption that Prince may have known it was his last days. In March (2017) Tyka Nelson, Prince’s sister said the same thing.

Prince’s childhood friend and one of his very first band members, Andre Cymone, also revealed that Prince, whom he hadn’t seen in a while, contacted him and was adamant about having him stop by Paisley Park months before his death, just to vibe and have a jam session like they used to do back in the day. Unfortunately Andre never got a chance to do that before Prince died.
