It’s been about fifteen years since most of us have seen the actress who played the flip talking semi-stuck up ‘Girlfriend,’ “Antoinette ‘Toni’ Marie Childs-Garrett.” Her real name is Jill Marie Jones and she brought a lotta character to the show.

In recent years, she’s continued to work, with her most recent roles being as a recurring character on the Fox series, Sleepy Hollow, and in a Starz horror-comedy series, titled, Ash vs Evil Dead.

Although Jill’s continued to appear in various projects, most of us Old Schoolers probably haven’t seen her lately, but she does, however make her presence known on social media with her regular Instagram posts.

Jill Explains What Happened When She Met Diana Ross

Speaking of Jill’s Instagram posts, that’s where she once told a cool story about the time her Girlfriend co-star/real-life friend, Tracee Ellis Ross, surprised her by taking her to meet her mom, Diana Ross. Jill revealed how Diana has always been her idol, so she was blown away when Tracee pulled that surprise on her. She had nothing but beautiful things to say about their meeting though. Here’s what she described of that moment:

So it’s safe to assume that the “bum” was actually no bum in real life, but was instead probably well taken care of because he and his nephew were always extremely close. I’m proud to say that my nephew has immortalized me between the movies and all the people I’ve met in Hollywood. Details In Ray Murphy’s Passing

Uncle Ray passed away in 2013 and he was a very talented comedian who was still performing late in life. So it looks like Eddie and his beloved late brother, Charlie Murphy, were basically bred to be comedic stars. That’s evident when we see the history of their Uncle Ray, because Ray’s entertainment history dates back to the 1940’s. According to Uncle Ray’s obituary, his mother had an epiphany when he and his siblings were very young that someone in the fam’ would be stars:

‘Almost immediately, her children Henry Roosevelt, William Leroy, James Earl, Virginia Mae, Raymond “Ray” Leon and Charles Edward began applying their varied talents – singing, tap dancing and comedy. In anticipation of becoming that superstar, Ray teamed up with his brother Leroy, and formed “The Comedy of Roy and Ray.” Challenges preceded them. Blacks were systematically barred from performing without a partner and minstrel shows represented the only performing opportunities of any kind. However, taking on the racial inequalities on the comedy circuit, Ray remained optimistic about his future in entertainment and formed the Doo Wop group “The Akrons.”’

Fast forward to the 80’s and it was Eddie who became the world-famous star of the fam,’ but he opened up the doors for several of his other family members to walk through, Uncle Ray included. Ray became the head of Eddie’s security at one point. Then he began to open up for Eddie’s and Charlie’s comedy shows and the rest is history. He would go one to perform off and on after that.

Remember “Kim Reese” on A Different World? Her real name is Charnele Brown. One interesting thing about her is that before we came to know her as the cute girl at “Hillman College,” she walked away from a very promising career that many parents would have given her the side eye for stepping away from just because she got a shot at a then unknown TV show that didn’t involve a promising and consistent paycheck yet. Charnele didn’t feel that way though, and in 1987 when she got the call that the producers wanted to try her out for A Different World, her life changed and she immediately said ‘Peace out’ to a very promising career.

Nowadays Charnele is doing more work behind the scenes, writing several stage plays for the theatrical world in Houston, TX. She currently owns an acting school, Tri-Wen Productions.

Additionally, Charnele was working on developing a sitcom to give mainstream media more positive African American representations on television. Charnele doesn’t hold her tongue when it comes to voicing her dislike for the shows she sees on television today. This is what she said about today’s entertainment climate:

“Twenty years ago if someone would have told me we love to see black women on TV back biting and fighting, I would have laughed in their face. Now we have to bring back the wholesomeness in television. We can bring back dignity through reality TV.” Charnele is a Christian who is objective enough to understand that acting and entertainment is simply a job. Actors must make the decision within themselves to go as far as they want. “I don’t like that people talk about Beyonce. She is a light and a woman of God. Anyone who judges her and can’t see the light within her doesn’t have the light within themselves.”

We understand where Charnele is coming from. Although I don’t knock reality shows, I do think it’s time to bring more balance to the TV screen, just as we desperately need more balance with today’s music. As if many weren’t already shocked to learn that Malcolm X had dated a Caucasian woman in real life, Kate Vernon shocked the world a tad bit more, when she publicly claimed, in a 1992 LA Times interview, that Spike Lee treated her like a second class citizen on the movie set. According to her, things got so tense that they had a VERY heated argument while filming! See what Kate said all of this hoopla was about…

THEIR HEATED ARGUMENT WITH SPIKE LEE

At first Kate Vernon had a positive outlook about Spike and his films, but once it was time for her to work with him, her views about Spike Lee shifted after she was interviewed by him and rehearsals began:

‘”He was very kind of supportive and inquisitive, [said Vernon]. …  But according to Vernon, working with Lee from then on was difficult. She said his attitude changed as soon as rehearsals began. “It was as if he was very aloof, very disinterested,” she said. “Spike’s way of working with me, I mean in polite terms, I could say he was very quiet. He didn’t pay much attention to me.”

Vernon said she and Washington ended up working out their scenes during the rehearsals. “Spike was in the corner sort of going through the script watching,” she said. “I found that to be very uncomfortable because I felt like I couldn’t go to Spike. I am speaking about my experience with him, not everyone’s experience. I never felt part of the process. In that way it was terribly uncomfortable. I can’t figure out the psychology of Spike and I tried to.”

Kate then became pissed when she claimed that Spike Lee didn’t honor her contract when it came to nudity:

“In my contract, we agreed no nudity,” Vernon said. “The family of Malcolm X didn’t want any nudity.”

Vernon claims that once it was time to shoot the love scene with Denzel in the back of a Cadillac, Spike went against her contract. She says that only her shoulders were supposed to have been show, but claims Spike told her the scene would only work if she showed her breasts, presumably to give it a more realistic feel:

“This argument broke out between Spike and I,” she said. “I am trapped in this car and I am fighting with Spike to honor my contract. What resulted is that he cut the scene in half.”

SHE’LL NEVER WORK WITH HIM AGAIN

Via LA Times- Vernon said…she was in Rome filming a comedy, “Jackpot.” One morning, she heard a loud knock at her trailer door. It was Lee. “He said, ‘How you doing?,’ which was really great. He was lecturing at a filmmaking school and thought he would stop by and say, ‘Hi.’ I thought it was really sweet.” Still, she says, she doesn’t hope to work with the director again. “I feel like I have worked with him, I know what it is like.”

We’re not sure what Spike thoughts are about Kate’s claims, but we have learned one thing about him. To get the best performances out of actors, one of his tactics has been to intentionally create tension off-camera, as a way to get that authenticity of a tense situation on camera. Example: Spike created a real-life tense scenario for the actors who played the gigaboos and the wannabees in his film, “School Daze,” because he wanted that same off-camera tension between the actors to seem real in the film.

Some would say that’s the work of a genius, while others -especially those on the receiving end of said tension (like Kate Vernon was)- will probably say that’s the work of a jerk. But there’s no denying that when Spike puts his creative skills behind something, magic happens, just like it did in the “School Daze” and “Malcolm X.”

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I- like some of you- did not know her by name for many years, but I certainly knew her face and I even remembered her as “Zaria.” Remember “Zaria,” Robert Townsend’s ‘TV daughter’ on The Parent ‘Hood sitcom? Or maybe you recall her as Flex’s youngster sis’ on the sitcom, One On One.

Reagan also was the voice of “Roberta Tubbs,” “Cleveland Brown’s” stepdaughter in the hit animated show, The Cleveland Show, from 2009 to 2013.

Now that we’re all up to speed about Reagan Gomez-Preston’s past career, let us fill you in on her current grown n’ sexy status as a businesswoman, wonderful mother, and devoted wife to her hubby and their two children.

Currently Owns Her Own Production Company

Although Reagan doesn’t look like she’s aged at all since her teen years, today she’s 40 years old and running her own production company, RGP Productions. Her company’s popular sci-fi web series, Surviving, was recently nominated for a Gotham Award and although she didn’t win, she was just as grateful for the recognition of her hard work.

Regan took the initiative to start her own production company due to a lack of roles for people of color in Hollywood. She’s clearly not one to sit around and wait for opportunity, instead she created it herself.

That go-getter trait is one Reagan may have inherited from her Puerto Rican mother, Cheryl Gomez, who, as a police officer with the Detroit Police Department, was one of the very first women to ever be assigned to street patrol. Unfortunately, after several racial and sexual harassment occurrences on the job, Cheryl quit the force, filed and won a sexual harassment lawsuit between $800,000 and $1.2 million against the Detroit Police Department. Reagan’s African American father, Bennett Preston, is a medical examiner/pathologist in Philly…

REAGAN’S & HUBBY’S ADORABLE KIDS

Now let’s talk about Reagan’s husband and kids. Her husband, DeWayne Turrentine, whom she’s been married to for 21 years (1999)…

Dwayne’s a singer/model and was one half of the 90’s kid rap duo, Quo- the very first act signed to Michael Jackson’s record label, MJJ Records. They’re single, “Blowin’ Up (Don’t Stop the Music produced by Teddy Riley),” was produced by Teddy Riley in 1994. Today as a skilled musician and singer, Dewayne will be releasing new music soon and as far as we know, he’s still getting his model on also.

Many of us know him as “Eddie King” from “The Five Heartbeats,” but his real name is Michael Wright. Wright is a helluva talent and always had the ability to not just act his characters out, but become every character he played- from the “Heartbeats,” to “Sugar Hill” and beyond. There was one major career flub that was revealed recently, which Wright regretted more than any other move he’d made in his career and it had something to do with the ’91 film “New Jack City.”

The year 2016 marked the 25th anniversary of the iconic 1991 classic, “New Jack City,” and to celebrate that, the writer of the film, Barry Michael Cooper,  revealed to Ambrosia For Heads, a few behind-the-scenes facts that we never knew. One of those facts is that the role that rapper, Ice T, played- the undercover cop, “Scotty”- was originally written specifically for Michael Wright. Here’s what Cooper explained about that:

Michael Cooper: “He [Michael Wright] was the original ‘Scotty.’ They gave it to Michael Wright. Mike said, ‘I can’t do that.’ Years later he said, ‘Barry, that was the worst mistake of my life, man.’ I said, ‘Naw. It just wasn’t the time.’ Later on [he and Wesley Snipes] played brothers in Sugar Hill. Ice-T came in. Dope rapper; I didn’t know how he was as an actor—’cause I didn’t count [Breakin’ II]. When he got on set, he’s another one that doubled down. He did a very, very good job, and has since turned to a very capable actor. He was fearless, man! That scene at the end when he said, ‘I wanna shoot you so bad my di*k is hard,’ I didn’t write that. That’s ad-lib. He came up with that!”

We could definitely see Wright nailing that cop role and it would have been a big contrast to his “Eddie King” character. Ice T did his thing with the ‘Scotty’ role, but Wright would have also brought that seasoned raw, street element to the role nonetheless. Ah well…although turning down the part was Michael Wright’s biggest regret, we all live and we learn…then keep it movin,’ just as Wright has done.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actress, Tatyana Ali, dated a popular actor who was mostly known for his TV and film roles throughout the 90s. Her ex was considered a teen sensation among the pop culture crowd and he and Tatyana were extremely in love during the height of both of their careers. Sadly, this actor is actually committed suicide.

His name is Jonathan Brandis. You may recognize his face from several roles. He was a highly sought after actor who starred in the 90’s film Ladybug, he was the star of the 90’s NBC series seaQuest DSV and he made many guest appearances on shows like Who’s The Boss, Full House, One Life To Live, Murder She Wrote, L.A. Law, The Wonder Years, and more.

Jonathan Brandis committed suicide and ultimately died from injuries he suffered from hanging himself in the hallway of his apartment on November 12, 2003. Tatyana and Jonathan began dating at the height of Jonathan’s career in the mid 90’s and they were deeply in love for three years. They were no longer dating at the time of his 2003 suicide, but they were still friends.

Tatyana was extremely saddened about his death, which was really evident in his EOnline special, Broken Dreams, when she spoke emotionally about his suicide. She also hinted that his dwindling career was what caused him to go over the edge when she stated: “When you’ve been on covers of magazines for years, when that stops happening, what’s your identity?”

Johnathon’s friends also echoed that same sentiment, as reported by sitcomsonline:

‘Brandis died from injuries he suffered after hanging himself the previous day. According to his mother, he went out to dinner with friends, then they went back to his apartment. His friends reported that he seemed to be agitated and pacing around quite a bit. He left the room, and approximately 15 minutes later, one of his friends went looking for him and found him hanging by a nylon rope in the second floor hallway of his building. His friends cut him down and called paramedics. Despite all efforts to revive him, he was later pronounced dead.

The Los Angeles Police Department released a statement regarding his death:

Brandis apparently did not leave a note of any kind. He had no known personal problems, except for the fact that he was usually quite hard on himself. According to his mother, he had no prior suicide attempts, drank socially and had quit smoking two years prior. In a People Magazine article, friends were quoted as saying he was lonely and depressed about his lagging career. One friend admitted that Brandis drank heavily, and had even mentioned that he might kill himself. He was also said to be upset when his appearance in Hart’s War, a role he hoped would be his comeback, was cut from the film.’

It’s probably not be a bad idea for childhood actors need to go through a required ongoing life coaching program that will help them to develop and be psychologically and emotionally healthy individuals during the fame and after the lights and screaming tweens fade out. Tatyana seems to have dodged that bullet, but many stars like the Diff’rent Strokes kids- Todd Bridges, Gary Coleman and Dana Plato- and so many others weren’t as fortunate.

He’s A Notre Dame Graduate

Hawthorne graduated from Notre Dame University and has a masters degree from the University of Michigan. He also studied at London Shakesppeare Academy. He taught at Illinois State University for two years, prior to going to L.A. to pursue acting professionally. He is also a producer, director, and writer. In a recent Youtube interview, Hawthorne stated:

“I knew I didn’t wanna teach. That was way too political for me in the theater department.”

‘Big Red’ said that although he’s been performing on stage since he was five, it wasn’t until he toured with his high school as part of the cast for Hamlet, that he really caught the acting bug:

Hawthorne James: “It [the high school “Hamlet” tour] opened my eyes because you know, I’m a kid from the south side of Chicago, so I very rarely got to see White people. When we went on tour we stayed at White people’s houses and you know, being a kid, you’re thinking white beans and cornbread is normal. Maaan, I got to them folks’ houses- they were eating steaks and chicken and (laughs) it just totally opened my eyes and I was like ‘Well wait a minute! Woah! People live like this?!!”

“Then the straw that really broke the camel’s back…was when I was doing a play in high school in Michigan. Right before I went on stage, a girl kissed me…man I went out on stage and probably forgot all my lines, I was hooked then boy! I get kissed for going out on stage?!! I’m done! This is it buddy! (laughs) And you know what’s funny? I never let another girl kiss me before I went out on stage for a long time. That became a big superstition of mine.”

So “Big Red” has a very highly trained acting background, not only in film, but in theater…and not just any theatrical play- he was performing in Shakespeare plays by the time he was an adult, which is yet another shocker! “Big Red” knows Shakespeare? Could you imagine him saying lines like “For where art thou” and such?!!” WOW! Talk about diverse!

If you recall, Joe played, ‘Byron Douglas III,’  ‘Whitley’s’ love interest for a brief second on Different World, whom she infamously left standing at the altar for ‘Dwayne-Wayne.’ Check out what Jasmine said about her crush on Joe during her TVOne interview below…

“I don’t know if he had any idea what a crush I had on him. […] I had a rule with Kadeem that we would only kiss in front of the audience. Like, we wouldn’t kiss in the four days rehearsing.[…]. With Joe, I didn’t implement that rule.”

After seeing that video clip, I think it would be a good idea to get Jasmine on Scandal as ‘Rowan Pope’s’ villainous love interest. We know she’s good for it- let’s not forget about her scandalous character, ‘Dominique La’Rue’ in Harlem Nights. Seeing Jasmine on Scandal is just wishful thinking on our part, but it’s a helluva good idea.
