Coko and this rapper seemed like an unlikely match back in the day, because they seemed to be so different at that time. But it’s true, they were a couple and their union produced a child. Digable Planets Rapper, Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler (Memba’ Him?)

Tuh-dahhh!!! The father of Coko Clemons’ eldest son, Jazz, is none other than “Mr. Cool Like Cat”…Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, of the ’90s rap group, Digable Planets!

If you were bobbing your head to rap classics back in the day, you definitely know his group. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Digable Planets, they were one of the main groups to fuse a jazz sound with unique hip hop vocals and their hit, “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” sent them into another stratosphere in the ’90s. As far as Ishmael and Coko’s relationship, Coko admitted that they weren’t together for long, but that they were in love. Their son was born in 1997, and here is what Coko revealed about them in a 2000 interview with Honey Magazine:

“People would ask us, ‘What do y’all talk about?’ because we’re really different,” says Coko of her ex. A shy laugh gets caught in her voice. “I watch TV, he doesn’t. I eat fried food and pork. He doesn’t. So some things were really weird, but he taught me a lot and he learned some things from me. But I think we were too different for it to really last.” Coko smiles as she talks of him, and though she initially claimed she was mad at Ishmael at the time of the interview, it’s clear the two are still good friends.

“He’s a good father,” she continues, “and he was special. We have a special bond, a special relationship.” Raising her eyebrows and lightening her tone, she adds, “He’s a good man. He’s going to make somebody a good husband.”

Ishmael wasn’t the only artist who Coko dated, she was also in a relationship with another popular 90’s entertainer who was also a member of a popular group, only this time he was an R&B cat, not a rapper.

Remember Shai? They had EVERYBODY singing the lyrics to their ’90s love song: “And if I ever fall in love again. She first admitted that she thought they’d be together forever, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. However, Coko vowed to handle their divorce like grown folks for the sake of their son and the love that she and Mike both have for each other:

“We always thought we’d be together forever! Through the good, the bad, the ugly, the ups and the downs…we’d still be married. But, things don’t always work out the way we plan or hope. After 15 years of marriage, my husband and I have decided to call it quits. Our fairytale has come to an end. I’ll definitely miss him! But life goes on and I have to make the best of it. I wish him all the best in his future. I pray that he will lack nothing! For the sake of our son we will do our best to co-parent. We’re not enemies, we’re just two people that fell out of love.”

Coko also kept it 100, by admitting she is terrified of what comes next, now that the life she’s known for 15+ years is about to be brand new all over again:

Now, Coko has deleted all photos of Mike from her Instagram page and Mike has reduced his many photos of Coko down to just one collage, which seemed more like a farewell ode to his soon to be ex. Point is: even though there seems to be some tension between the two behind the scenes, they are clearly determined to maintain their composure publicly and handle their differences respectful manner. Fifteen years ago today (October 19, 2017), Mike and Coko took the leap of faith and jumped the broom, after just 6 months of dating. Mike, as a professional drummer in the music game, and Coko’s love of music is probably what contributed to their love connection moving at lightening speed at that time. Apparently, they both got ‘so weak at the knees they could hardly speak, lost all control’ and said “I do,” while many folks around them were saying ‘Oh HELL naw…don’t DO, it’s TOO SOON!’ Coko will explain this in a minute…

You see, ILOSM fam,’ sometimes we just gotta go with our gut instinct- sure we may strike out, but hell, that’s what the Higher Power gave us legs and hindsight for. If we screw up, we look back in hindsight and have a clearer vision of what we did wrong, then we use that wisdom to keep walking/running forward toward the next opportunity. In the Clemons’ case, they moved on their gut instinct to get married and today, as they celebrate their 15th year of marital bliss, they’re glad they did.

Although they’ve both moved on with their lives, the photo proves that people can get along after breaking up. Fans applauded their level of maturity and how they were able to come together, without drama because we all know there can be drama where baby mamas and baby daddies are concerned. Singer, K. Michelle, has disrespected one of the powerhouse singers of the 90’s, Coko Clemons, of SWV and people didn’t take too well to that.

As you may recall, K. Michelle performed Patti LaBelle’s “If only You Knew” along with singer Tamar Braxton and Patti at the 2015 BET Awards. There were mixed reactions from the public regarding K. Michelle’s and Tamar’s performance- some people were attempting to be as polite as they could be and some were just letting their raw dislike show, but just about everyone agreed that Patti shut it down and that K. Michelle and Tamar didn’t stand a chance singing next to Patti.
