Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder, Dame Dash, recently raised eyebrows when he revealed that he turned down the opportunity to produce the 2004 comedy film, “Soul Plane.” During a podcast interview with Math Hoffa, Dame claimed that he declined the offer because he didn’t want “white people making money off making fun of us.” The film, which starred Snoop Dogg and Kevin Hart, received criticism for its stereotypical portrayals of Black people.

Dash, who had previously worked with Hart on the film, “Paper Soldiers,” expressed his disappointment that Hart didn’t publicly support him and questioned why the comedian wouldn’t share his work. Despite their past collaboration, Dash felt that Hart’s involvement in “Soul Plane” went against his own principles.

“Anyone who interviews Kev, and he’ll say it. ‘Dame put me in my first movie.’ Why you won’t post his s—t?” Dash said in an interview clip.

“They had asked me to produce ‘Soul Plane’ and I got offended,” he continued. “I didn’t like white people making money off making fun of us,” said Dash.

While Dash acknowledged Hart’s success, he criticized the comedian for certain choices, such as buying a billboard for his film, “Get Hard,” which showed him braiding co-star, Will Ferrell’s, hair. Dash emphasized that he wouldn’t have made the same decision, stating:

“I wouldn’t braid another man’s hair on a billboard… He has done things that I didn’t raise him to do, but he has a different kind of comedy.”

“Soul Plane” faced backlash from some within the Black community for perpetuating stereotypes. Iconic director, Spike Lee, referred to the film as “coonery and buffoonery” at that time. Despite the criticism, the film has since become a cult classic.

Dame didn’t stop with just his “Soul Plane” criticism though. He also called out Kevin for supposedly continuing to do him dirty, by never sharing any of Dame’s content with his millions of followers. The way Dame sees it…he helped Kev’ out by putting him in his first movie, so now that the tables are turned, Dame feels that Kevin should help him out by spreading the word about Dame’s various projects on his platform:

“I’m not judging [Kevin], I’m just saying, just repost my sh*t! I was never mad at him for doing anything he’s done. It’s just not what I would do, and I’m not mad at him now. But it would be nice if any one of y’all muthaf**kas I put on would post my s—t,” Dame said.

Dame’s and Kevin’s reported interactions raises important questions about representation, responsibility, and the boundaries of creative expression in the entertainment game. While they had collaborated in the past, their differing perspectives on comedy and social responsibility highlight the complexities of navigating success in Hollywood. It all started when Dame Dash found himself in a legal battle with a film producer, Josh Webber, over an alleged debt of $832,000. According to legal documents, Webber and his company, Muddy Waters Pictures, filed a lawsuit against Dame in 2022 in an attempt to collect their judgment. Their plan? To go after Dash’s shares in Roc-A-Fella, the record company he co-founded with Jay-Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke.

But Jay-Z and Biggs weren’t about to let that happen. They came to Dame’s defense and pumped the brakes on the process of selling his shares. This move was not entirely surprising, considering the history between the three co-founders. Despite the fallout of Roc-A-Fella, it seems that there is still enough mutual respect and camaraderie for Jay-Z to protect Dame Dash from losing his stake in the company.

To understand the gravity of the situation, let’s go back to 2016 when Dame Dash was fired as the director of Webber’s crime thriller film, “Dear Frank.” It was claimed that Dash was unfit for the role, displaying abusive behavior towards staff and showing up to set under the influence. This led to a series of legal disputes between Dash and Webber, including a lawsuit for copyright infringement and defamation, which resulted in a judgment against Dash in 2022.

While Dame Dash has yet to comply with the court order to pay off the judgment, Jay-Z and Biggs made it clear that they won’t let Dash’s shares be sold off without their consent. They argued that the bylaws of Roc-A-Fella require the full board’s approval for any significant sell-offs. Although U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lehrburger criticized this decision, stating that Dash wasn’t present at the board meeting where it was finalized, the court still ordered Dash to make his stock certification available within 180 days.

The former unofficial fiancee of Aaliyah, Damon Dash, spoke out in what was a rare showing of emotion for him (we say ‘unofficial fiancee’ because they weren’t officially engaged but Dame said they had marriage plans scheduled after Aaliyah would have finished filming “Matrix).

Typically Dame is more of a brash type of cat in interviews, but his appearance on “The Real” was anything but that. He spoke about the love of his life, the beloved Aaliyah, and revealed how he could have saved her life. He also revealed that Aaliyah had expressed some hesitation to him about flying in the small plane that she was ultimately killed in during the 2001 plane crash that claimed her life and everyone on board. Here’s what Dame Dash said on a prior interview on “The Real” talk show, when asked about Aaliyah’s plane crash and the conversation he had with her prior to that moment:

“There is no chance that, if I was there, we would have been on that plane.” he said. “So it would have never happened that way.”

“She told me she was going to the Bahamas and I was against it, like, ‘Yo, don’t go.’ And then down to the last — we had the Blackberry — down to the last Blackberry that we had, before she went there, she was like, ‘Yo, I don’t like that plane.’ And I was like, ‘Don’t get on it.’ And she was just like, ‘You know, I gotta do it.’ You know, it was a complicated situation, but she had to go do that video.”

It’s hard to believe Aaliyah has been gone for 15 years and it seems that she had so much more life ahead of her. It’s always hard to understand why some people have to exit this earth so young, but as we try to wrap our heads around understanding that, we can be grateful for whatever amount of time we had with them. According to Dame Dash, Aaliyah had gotten into a brief relationship with Jay Z. Years later,  Dame sat down with Hip Hop Motivation and made a revelation about both former best friend and business partners’ past relationships with the singer:

“I was going at her, but Jay was going at her. He knew her before I did,” Dame Dash said. “It was a situation where Aaliyah was the type of girl that would give you a shot. She didn’t care what people thought. So she’ll date you and be your friend. But you might end up in the friend zone… You wasn’t gonna just hit that. At least that was my experience.”

Dash and Roy married in 2005 yet were divorced only four years later. In that time Roy gave birth to two girls, Ava and Tallulah. Though Ava is now nineteen-years-old Tallulah is eleven and in April Dash filed a petition  seeking to increase the time in his custody agreement because of a new work schedule that’s no longer as demanding. However, Hot New Hip Hop claims that both Rachel and Ava aren’t buying his act because they know all too well about his erratic behavior.

The reasons behind their vehement denial stem from claims that Dash is constantly high as a kite around his children and has a lengthy history of domestic abuse. Accordingly, Roy claims the children have anxiety around their father.

Another part of this story is that Ava once filed a declaration against her father claiming that his alleged drug and alcohol usage changes his mood for the worse. However, apparently Dash isn’t the only one who has exhibited irresponsible behavior around their children.

Dash was not playing around when it came time for Daniels to pay him for the money he owed. Their drama stemmed back to around the time Daniels needed investors for his earlier films The Woodsman and Shadowboxer and when no one else wanted to help out Dash was there to offer financial assistance. However, once Daniels’ began making money he seemed to be harder to get a hold of as Dash tried to secure repayment of his investment. TMZ reports;

According to Dame … Daniels promised him he’d get his money back no matter what, but then blew him off — which is why Dash started suing Daniels in 2014. As we reported, they struck a settlement deal, but Damon tells us Lee’s sticking to his “culture vulture” ways … and still hasn’t squared up.

Dash sued Daniels for $5 million and the suit was settled back in November with an undisclosed amount that left Dash satisfied enough to say “I’m good. Just happy two people from the culture could work things out.” You would think this is the end of their drama but if anything it was merely an intermission because after Dash got his cash his exes, Rachel Roy and Cindy Morales, were ready to get broke off a couple of dollars as well. But instead of going to Dash they’re going to Lee Daniels for the money!

Back in June, Dash sued Daniels accusing him of breach of contract involving the Richard Pryor biopic they had both planned to work on. He claimed that a 2015 agreement made it clear that he would get a co-executive producing credit on the Pryor project, and also 5% of the profits that Daniels would eventually earn on the back end.

Dash said Daniels did not make an effort to fulfill his obligations and had been kept in the dark about the details of production and the progress of the film. He felt the alleged lack of communication and compliance on Daniels part fit the bill for a breach of contract.

On November 26, Dash filed court documents in New York revealing that he and Daniels have reached an agreement to discontinue all claims with prejudice, meaning the lawsuit cannot be refiled in the future. Dash settled his $5 million dollar lawsuit (The Blast).

According to documents obtained by The Blast, Daniels explains that a settlement was reached with Dash in November 2018 over the $5 million lawsuit but now Dash’s ex-wife Rachel Roy and child’s mother Cindy Morales have both served him with subpoenas to find out how much exactly the settlement with Dash is, and claiming they are both owed money in child support from the music producer.

Daniels is pleading with the court to help him figure out who the money should go to and says he needs it figured out fast as his next payment is due today, April 5.

Dame Dash’s mouth may be getting him in “financial” trouble this time. Another lawsuit over a film a director says was “hijacked.”

Dame Dash is having a rough month. He turned himself in a few weeks ago, before being arrested for back child-support. Dash had outstanding warrants after being accused of owing around $400,000 to his exes Cindy Morales, the mother of his son, Lucky, and Rachel Roy, the mother of his daughters, Ava and Tallulah.

Legal Trouble Mounting

Damon Dash is now in a legal batter with a filmmaker over a film both have claimed as their own.

According to The Blast Josh Webber just filed a new multi-million dollar lawsuit against Dame, over comments the mogul made regarding a disputed film called “Dear Frank” or alternatively, “The List.”

Josh Webber and Muddy Water Pictures went after Damon in court, over a film he says his company produced called “Dear Frank,” which stars Claudia Jordan, Brian White, Columbus Short, Lil Durk, and Torrei Hart.

Webber said Dame was irrational and high on set, and he was eventually fired from the project in 2018.

But Damon allegedly started marketing the movie as his own under a different titled called “The List,” a claim he denied in a countersuit.

Their beef spilled over online when both men shared their sides of the story online.

Dame Dash Started Talking

According to AllHipHop, Dame Dash said:

“This is the movie the list #thelist that I directed and produced about a year ago… @muddfilms is pretending he owns this film and @joshawebber (pure culture vulture) is pretending he directed this movie I’m letting you know now we will be legally dealing with this and any one that touches this film before this is handled will be exposed legally as well,” Dame threatened.

Then the filmmaker replied:

“Dame has no idea what directing a movie actually is or takes and was constantly yelling at crew members/cast, berating people on set, smoking weed and basically sleeping at the wheel. Then while in the process of finishing the film, Dame was being a hot head with the studio executive producer/financier stepping out of line and finally got FIRED!! ⌛️” Josh Webber wrote on Instagram.

Dame Dash had to put Lee Daniels on front street, after Lee has repeatedly dodged the brotha over the $5million he never repaid Dash for a multimillion dollar loan, plus a ‘promised’ 5% on backend profits for a Richard Pryor biopic that Lee is/was reportedly producing. It was only after Damon Dash posted video of their recent Diana Ross concert confrontation on social media, that Lee finally responded, which is pretty foul when you think about it. Why didn’t he just pay up BEFORE it reached that point? Anyways, now Lee Daniels is speaking out and is very apologetic for what he did to Dash. Here’s what he had to say in a TMZ interview…
When asked how he felt when Dame Dash confronted him at Diana Ross’ concert and posted it on social media, Daniels said:

“Well, I was uncomfortable, it was a very uncomfortable thing. And here’s the thing, it made me think. I thought…he was hurt…and it made me think, because…when NOBODY in Hollywood was giving me money after my Academy Award- unprecedented with Halle Berry (for “Monster’s Ball”)…Damon’s crazy a$$ was crazy enough to give me money for ‘The Woodsmen’ and for ‘Shadow Boxer,'” Lee jokingly said about Dash. He continued, “The investment for ‘Shadow Boxer,’ didn’t pay off. It was an investment (not a loan) but I looked him in the eyes and I told him that ‘you would get your investment back.’

This Black man gave me money when NOBODY -not Disney, not Sony, not Tri-Star, not Paramount, not Warner Brothers- [would] for a film and he did it. And for that, he deserves his money. And so I’m gonna work out something for him to get it, because I am in a position now to get it to him. So I’m gonna get it to him, ’cause I think that, that’s the right thing to do. And it sadly took that wake up call, during Diana’s ‘Reach Out And Touch Somebody’s Hand,’ for me to realize that and for me to sit with myself. He believed in me when nobody else did and for THAT, he deserves it.”

Lee continued:

“I don’t know that I’d be successful, if it weren’t for him [Dash] …So…I really had to get quiet with myself to think that…if it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have…went on to make “The Butler,” and/or “Precious,” and/or “Empire.” He was part of my journey and for me to turn y back on that, was wrong.”

Dame Dash sometimes gets labeled as a hot head, but clearly in this situation, he was not. For years, he held his composure and went about it the legal way…until it became evident that Lee was not gonna hold up his end of the agreement. THEN Dash exploded, as most folks would when owed millions by someone who has no intention on paying it back.

It’s good to see that Lee Daniels was big enough to confess his wrongs to the world…social media backlash works wonders, I tell ya. Now, let’s see if he will ever speak on comedian/”Precious” Oscar winner actress, Mo’Nique’s, claims against him….hmmm.
