Pam Grier is finally bringing her life story to the big screen in a biopic tentatively called Pam. The iconic actress who owned the blaxploitation era in film, provided us with sexy, yet powerful images of a Black woman who took no shorts. She has already pegged Bennie Richburg to write the screenplay and at least one of the characters has been cast.

The woman who brought us “Coffy,” “Foxy Brown,” and “Jackie Brown” led a colorful life, especially when it came to her love interests. She had a passionate love affair in the 1970’s with comedian, Richard Pryor, who will be portrayed in the film by SNL alum, Jay Pharoah. She met Pharoah met while they were doing voice work for the video game Infinity Wars.

“I watched him and heard his voice and closed my eyes and said, ‘It’s Richard,'” Grier told Deadline.

The film will draw largely from her autobiography, Foxy: My Life In Three Acts, where she goes into much detail about the other men in her life including NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and actor Freddie Prinze. She also shared much more heinous encounters like the time she was raped by two boys when she was just six years old, a second rape while in college, and the time she had to enlist the help of Liza Minnelli and her husband to escape the aggressive advances of Sammy Davis Jr.

As Grier’s career took off, she credited her agent John Gaines with getting her work and protecting her from sexual predators. He accompanied her to meetings and helped her navigate the do’s-and-dont’s of the business.

“If you go to meet someone on a business deal, your lawyer, manager, agent, someone must always be with you,” Grier recalled. “John always set those rules for me and created a comfort zone. He just had seen so much, he knew. When he took me to clubs, and someone would hand me a drink, he would say: ‘Don’t drink that. See the sediment at the bottom? You drink that and you won’t remember the next week.’ I became comfortable, not accepting the invitations.”

Yesterday, disturbing footage of Maia Campbell surfaced online. Months ago, it seemed the former In The House TV star was well on her way to a full recovery, but the latest video shows that she seems to have relapsed again, or is having some other type of horrific crisis in her life. Fans and celebrities everywhere have shared their reaction to the disheartening video and now her former In The House co-star, LL Cool J., is also reaching out to her.

Apparently, someone was able to give LL the information he was looking for, because he took to Instagram with another post shortly. The subliminal post simply said, “Thank You.” It is unclear what his plan is for Maia, but hopefully, he’s successful with his attempt to intervene. Many fans expressed concern for Maia and blasted the guy who filmed the video and exploited her.

Although Cherrelle has frequently talked about her other ex, singer Ran (of the group, Rick, Ran, and Dan), who tragically passed away in the 90’s, she never really publicly discusses her ex-husband, Dana, in interviews. Not sure why, but industry folks know about them and Dana himself released a documentary about his days in the dope dealing circle, where he also verified that he was married to Cherrelle in the 80’s. Wow, after watching the video maybe now I can understand why Cherrelle doesn’t necessarily want to go around blasting this information to anyone with ears…it’s not always easy for everyone to understand living that lifestyle, but again: great success does not come without great failures. So as far as Cherrelle’s ex-husband, hey we live and we learn, that doesn’t make her or anyone else who may be in the situation she was in, a bad person, it simply makes them a person- a perfectly flawed human being.

I think there are a few reasons that these artists begin to self medicate. First of all, they are faced with an enormous amount of pressure to be successful. They have many people working for them and they are fully aware that folks feed their families off of their success and if they fail, so do the people in their circle and their children…if that’s not pressure, I don’t know what is! Secondly, there’s a crazy amount of pressure to always be “on.” If these artists have one “off” day, their careers take a serious leap into “career hell.” I’ve heard many artists say that no matter how many times they perform, they are always nervous. That’s probably why some of them feel like they HAVE to get high before they go on stage. Thirdly, they have a tremendous amount of pressure to sell records and merchandise, and if they don’t, again, their careers will take a leap into “career hell” and they would be done, finished, with no chance of a return.

As we all know, there are many artists who have been rumored to be drug users, but that should not take away from the integrity of their art. I think maybe there should be some sort of Rookie Symposium for new artists, much like there is in the NFL. At least with that type of system in place that might set them on the right path when they first enter the music industry and possibly help to guide their decision making throughout their careers as it pertains to substance abuse.
