If there’s one thing we love abut social media, it’s the fact that everyone has the ability to tell celebs exactly how they feel. Freedom of expression is what we’re all about here at ILOSM, but LAWD, sometimes the comments left underneath celebs’ online posts can get so brutally honest, teetering on the borderline of constructive criticism vs. treacherous cruelty. I’ll admit that I was one of those people who’d hoped that Janet would finally get back with Jermaine. I mean, soon as her pending divorce was reported, it seemed like all the stars had realigned for the former lovebirds to be “back in stride again,” like Maze. Although they were probably one of the oddest celeb couples, they also seemed to have great chemistry. According to The Jasmine Brand, ‘Uncle Sam’ wants $578.6K from Dupri and he wants his paper NOW…or else he’s going to take it from him:

Via TJB- On May 29th, Dupri was hit with a state tax lien by the Georgia Department of Revenue. The lien accuses him of refusing to pay up on taxes for 2012, 2014 and 2015. The Department claims Dupri owes a total of $578,638 in taxes. The original amount owed was only $278,903 but grew with interest ($165k), penalties ($78k) and other collection fees ($55k) over the years.The Department warns the producer they will begin to seize his property and assets if he doesn’t pay up ASAP.

There’s one thing many folks know not to mess with- the Higher Power and the IRS. When it comes to our man, Jermaine, though, he’s not about to let his mega tax bill, nor a warning from ‘Uncle Sam,’ steal his joy…apparently. Nothing’s wrong with expressing freedom of speech, that’s everyone’s right, but nothing’s also wrong with getting called out about. Therefore Kanye is getting the publicity he’s clearly asked for. It’s gonna be interesting to see if his new album and Yeezy shoes fall to the pits of hell after all this.

J.D. captioned the post saying that he “can’t f*cking believe it” and that this is the payoff for all of the “long nights and early mornings” spent working in music. J.D. has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry to write and produce chart-topping, No. 1 hits.

Dupri co-wrote “We Belong Together” and “Always Be My Baby” with Mariah Carey and “Burn” with Usher. He launched the careers of rappers Bow Wow and DaBrat as well as R&B groups Xscape and Jagged Edge among others. He continues to source and develop new talent using his Lifetime show The Rap Game. The induction is undoubtedly well-deserved.

The 2018 class of inductees will be rounded out by Kool & the Gang, John Mellencamp, Alan Jackson, Allee Willis, Bill Anderson, and Steve Dorff. Songwriters Hall co-chairs Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff along with president and CEO Linda Moran issued a joint statement highlighting the importance of diversity in its ongoing recognition of songwriting talent.

Jermaine Dupri’s ‘Facts’

Dupri: “As far as culture, me, I brought people to Atlanta that had never seen Atlanta. I showed everybody in the world Magic City – I was the first person to start throwing money in the club. I had to pay for all the magazines to come to Atlanta – no one was paying attention to what’s going on – as far as culture goes and having parties, bringing Puff, bringing Envy and Clue to Atlanta, that was all me.”

Dupri’s So So Def label didn’t pop off until 1993, but it made an impact with Atlanta’s music scene through his So So Def imprint, with artists like Bow Wow, Da Brat, Xscape, and Kris Kross. However, there’s no denying that his claim of pretty much being the pioneer of Atlanta’s music scene is like a slap in the face to LaFace Records.

Babyface & .A.Reid’s Actual Facts

Babyface and L.A. Reid were the first to put ATL on the map in 1989, when they relocated to the southern city and did what no one had done at that time- build a multiplatinum selling music empire from the ground up. With artists like TLC, Goodie Mob, Outkast, Usher, Toni Braxton, Jermaine Jackson, Pink, Kenny Lattimore & Chante Moore, Shanice, Donell Jones, and many more, LaFace went on to garner major appeal across the United States and internationally. They were also able to break their artists in crossover markets, which meant even bigger paydays. LaFace reportedly grossed approximately $500 MILLION, far more than Dupri’s So So Def label reportedly did. That is not a diss by far though, just the actual facts.

It was also the success of LaFace Records that sparked the initial excitement about Atlanta’s potential. Many people from all over the country started relocating to the ATL, after LaFace’s artists made the city so mainstream. Atlanta’s real estate began to flourish and so did the music scene, with labels such as So So Def capitalizing off of the newfound hype of the city that LaFace Records sparked.

So I said all of this to say, that we should always pay homage, where homage is due…first.

The #1 spot for ATL’s music scene must go to Babyface’s and L.A.Reid’s LaFace Records and their dynamic artists. The #2 spot must go to Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def label and his dynamic artists as well. They’re all legendary, but there are levels to it. No shade, just actual facts.
