Legendary producer, Jimmy Jam (of the production duo, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis), is the brother-in-law of another legend. Turns out Jam’s wife, Lisa, isn’t the only one in her family who married a famous rich celebrity…her younger sister, Brandi, married (and has kids with) one of today’s greatest athletes.

As many of us Old Schoolers may already know, Lisa and Jimmy Jam have been married for 27 years (since 1994) and have three children together. Lisa’s sister’s marriage didn’t hit the 27-year mark, but she and her famous hubby had a pretty lengthy run at it as well.

PEEP JIMMY JAM’S VERY FAMOUS EX-BROTHER-IN-LAW…

Jimmy Jam’s former brother-in-law is the legendary NBA baller, Kevin Garnett, who retired after 21 years in the game…

Ten years after Lisa Padillia married Jimmy Jam in 1994, her lil’ sis,’ Brandi Padillia, said “I do” to Kevin in a private 2004 wedding ceremony. They also have two precious daughters together, ages 13 and 8. Unfortunately, as of 2019, Brandi and Kevin were in a VERY expensive divorce battle.  Word on the Old School curb is that Lisa came up big time with their divorce agreement. The former Mrs. Garnett reportedly receives $300,000.00 per month in spousal support and $46,000.00 monthly in child support.

The Padillia sisters seem to have a type: successful, powerful brothas. In the past, some have labeled them as gold diggers because of their tastes in men, but I don’t know if those claims hold any truth, or not. However, the sisters at least deserve props for managing to do what many celebrity marriages unfortunately cannot – stay together well past the 5-year mark.

Jimmy Jam & Kevin Garnett’s Close Friendship

Jam and Garnett have a close brotherly bond. In fact, they’re so close, that a lotta folks tried to get Jimmy to convince Kevin not to retire (after the end of the 2016-2017 season), but here’s what Jam had to say about that:

Jimmy Jam: “A lot of people that talked to me wanted to talk him back into playing another year. I passed things on to him, but I never really got a response. I figured that anybody trying to talk him into playing was probably falling on deaf ears in a sense. Of the arguments they were saying to me on why he should play, the only thing that really resonated to me was just the fact that once you retire you can’t really unretire, although Michael Jordan was different. That was the one. People said that if he waited another year then he would go into the Hall of Fame and it would be his year [instead of being with Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan in 2021]. I said, ‘Well, you don’t know Kevin really well.’ He’s not really a spotlight guy.”

Jimmy Jam On Supporting His Brother-in-Law At The Games

Jimmy Jam: I went to every [home] game [in Minnesota] and I used to drive my assistant crazy because whenever someone would say, ‘Can you come on this day to work on this project? Can we work on it this day?’ The first thing I would say to my assistant was, ‘Where are the Wolves that night?’ …Let’s plan it around that.’ -via The Undefeated

Back when R&B legend, Alexander O’Neal, was the lead singer for The Time (formerly called Flyte Time) – the band Prince formulated – he says he was kicked to the curb for a very biased reason. The “If You Were Here Tonight” crooner also made no qualms about his disdain for the way he claims Prince handled the situation. O’Neal also revealed who else reportedly betrayed him and the hurt he felt as a result of their actions. CLAIMS: ‘TOO DARK SKINNED’ AND ‘TOO COMPLICATED’???

According to O’Neal, he was presumably kicked outta the group for being too opinionated, while others around him believe it was because Prince felt that he was too dark skinned to be the lead singer. Thus, replacing him with a lighter hued brotha, Morris Day.

Alexander’ O’Neal: “Flyte Tyme was a wonderful band, and I felt we were on our way to getting a national deal. You know, I’d been picked to be the lead singer in a group owned by Prince; we’d started recording at Prince’s house… But then I got kicked out the band before I got kicked IN! Some people said it was because I was too black in skin pigmentation. But I still think it was because I was opinionated. I’d started showing I could think and started asking questions about the financial arrangements. But, you know, to be kicked out was heart-breaking.

WHY O’NEAL FELT BETRAYED AND DIDN’T RESPECT PRINCE’S DECISION

O’Neal explained how hurt and betrayed he felt after learning that the other members — including legendary producer duo, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis — were rehearsing presumably with the new lead singer, Morris Day, without telling him he was fired.

AO: “And the main thing I couldn’t respect about it was that Prince hadn’t been man enough to tell me. Because, all of a sudden, Flyte Tyme started rehearsing behind my back so they could become `The Time` without me! And all this time we were still doing gigs together! You know, they’d suddenly start mixing these new songs into the set and I’d be like ‘Where’s THIS coming from?’!”

Terry Lewis eventually came clean with O’Neal:

AO:”And the only one out of all of them with the balls to tell me what was happening was Terry Lewis! But, though when I got the news I was really hurt, a lotta times good things come out of a bad situation. And that was just fuel for the fire for me!”

HOW JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWIS SAVED O’NEAL’S CAREER…AFTER PRINCE FIRED THEM TOO

According to O’Neal, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were responsible for saving his career and staying true to a promise they’d made him after they had also gotten fired by Prince.

AO: “Because I felt that, if I was good enough to even be CONSIDERED for a group by Prince, then I must be good enough for the music industry! And, when Jimmy (Jam) and Terry (Lewis) came home from LA one summer night – after THEY’D got kicked outta The Time by Prince – they came into this club I was performing at in downtown Minneapolis and were like ‘Alex, when we get our plans off the ground we’re gonna get you a record deal’. And that’s exactly what they DID!”

Wow…if Alexander O’Neal’s story is accurate, then the way he was fired was cold to say the last. But you never know, Prince may have had a different recollection of the way things went down. For example, O’Neal never made it a secret that he’s battled with drug addiction for 30+ years, so could that have been a contributing factor in this scenario as well? Who knows? We certainly don’t, but it is worth mentioning. Now, if Prince simply fired O’Neal for being a dark skinned brotha, then that was incredibly foul on so many levels.

We appreciate Alexander O’Neal for being so transparent about this; and  may Prince continue to rest in peace and power.

All of the other artists showed up to sing their own songs during Babyface’s tribute- Brandy, Bobby Brown, Tevin Campbell, and Boyz II Men– but the only person they did the ol’ switcharoo on was Karyn White. We LOVE us some Fantasia, so she was just as entertaining to watch no doubt, but it was very interesting that Karyn was mysteriously missing from the show’s lineup, that’s all.

Anyways, Karyn White took to her Youtube channel on Monday (11-30-15) to formally address this whole absentee performance herself, because she said that she has been getting a ton of calls and questions on social media about her Soul Train Awards absence.

Karyn said that without Babyface, L.A. Reid, and Darryl Simmons producing and writing “Superwoman,” it would have never came to fruition, but that it is SHE who made it a hit. Check out what else Ms. White had to say in the video clip below…

Jimmy Jam of the hit making producer duo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, kept it all the way real when a paparazzi cat stopped him on the street and compared singer, Adele, to Janet Jackson. You see, ever since the numbers on her “25” album have just come out, it’s been proven that Adele has done what most singers haven’t been able to do in years, and that is sell 3+ million albums in the first week of it’s release. It’s set a new wave of hope and relief for the dying art of selling records within the music industry.

Needless to say, folks couldn’t wait to compare Adele to some heavy hitters, like Janet Jackson, who recently set a new personal record when she became only the third artist to have ever achieved #1 selling album in each of the last four decades with the release of her #1 album “Unbreakable.”

The the reason the paparazzi brought up Adele to Jimmy Jam, is because Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced “Unbreakable,” but Adele sold a few million more than Janet’s 109,000 albums sold in it’s first week. So when he was asked about the comparison between the two, Jam gave Adele her respect and her props, but he also had to set the record straight on the imbalanced Janet and Adele comparison.
