Decades after the ’90s cult classic film, “Boyz N’ The Hood,” hit theaters, late director legend, John Singleton, was still getting a kick outta the sweet revenge he got on N.W.A. rapper/Ruthless Records founder, Eazy-E at that time. However, before we get into what transpired between those two legends, can y’all believe it’s been 32 years since “Tre” yelled “RICKYYYYYY!!!” in that alley? Geesh…where’d the time go?!! Eazy E’s Rejection & Singleton’s Payback

John Singleton was only 23 years old and fresh outta college, when he directed the film…but he had a HUGE vision for it. In a prior interview with Vice, he revealed that when he’d written the “Boyz N’ The Hood” script, he wrote it specifically with the hopes that N.W.A.’s members would fill all of the significant roles.

Well, as y’all can see, Singleton only ended up with one former N.W.A. rapper in the film– Ice Cube. The rest of them declined, including the member John most wanted in it…Eazy-E. According to Singleton, Eazy dissed him…and this is what happened next:

Vice: Is it true you wanted the rest of NWA to be in the film as well?
John Singleton: They were supposed to be in it – that was my plan. The first time I met Eazy-E I said that I had this movie, but he wasn’t concerned about it.

V: Is that why you had the guy wearing the “We Want Eazy” shirt getting beat up in the film?
JS: Yeah. That was Ice Cube’s first day of production. I called him up and told him to bring all his NWA paraphernalia to the set. And then all of a sudden the crackhead walks out and his shirt says says, “We Want Eazy.” Cube laughs, and I say, “Y’all gonna whoop his a$$!” I did that – that was me!

Gotta love the smell of a lil’ comical revenge. Even though Eazy-E rejected Singleton, there may have been a good reason why he declined…

Why Eazy Probably Declined Singleton’s Offer

The year was 1991, when “Boyz N’ The Hood” film released — but by that time as most of us, Old Schoolers, recall — Eazy had other issues to deal with. In 1989, Ice Cube left N.W.A., so once ’91 rolled around, Cube was in a full fledged rap war with his former group members, MC Ren, Eazy E., Dr. Dre, and DJ Yella.

In 1990, NWA released their infamous Ice Cube diss track on their “100 Miles and Running” EP, in which they rapped: “We started with five, but yo / One couldn’t take it—So now it’s four / Cuz the fifth couldn’t make it.” They also called Cube “Benedict Arnold” on that EP.

By 1991, Ice Cube hit back at his the group on the diss track, “No Vaseline,” with these bars: “You lookin’ like straight bozos / I saw it comin’ that’s why I went solo / Kept on stompin’ / When y’all Muthafuc*as moved Straight outta Compton / You got jealous when I got my own company / But I’m a man, and ain’t nobody helpin’ me.”

In 1991, there were further issues for Eazy-E. That same year, the man responsible for NWA’s signature sound, Dr. Dre, left the group too, and launched Death Row Records with Suge Knight. Other N.W.A. members eventually left also, due to reported money conflicts with Eazy-E.

So…yeah, the early ’90s was NOT a good time for John Singleton to get a N.W.A. collabo’ for “Boyz N The Hood.” The idea was great though.

Actor, Cuba Gooding Jr., detailed what his last moments with legendary director, John Singleton, were like prior to John passing away at the young age of 51.

In a prior interview, Cuba expressed his extreme gratitude for Singleton, who gave him his start in the film industry, with his role as “Tre Styles,” in Singleton’s 1991 Boyz N’ The Hood classic.

Cuba also is forever grateful that he was able to tell John how much he loved him before he passed.

As soon as he found out John Singleton had suffered a massive stroke in mid-April, Cuba rushed to the hospital to see him. Unfortunately, by that time, John was already in a coma, from which he never awakened.

“I was with John when he passed in the hospital, he was already in a coma when we got there,” Cuba told Too Fab. “But I got the opportunity to tell him that I love him, and to thank him for starting my career, and Omar Gooding’s career, my brother who was in ‘Baby Boy’.”

Gooding Jr. went on to reminisce about himself, John Singleton, and Boyz N the Hood co-star, Morris Chestnut, being born within a 6 day window of each other -between January 1 to January 6, 1968- and pointing out that he believes that connected their brotherhood on a deeper level:

“We were like three guys starting our careers on that movie, I’ll always love him for that.”

Prior to Cuba visiting Singleton in the hospital, he says the last time he’d seen him was one year prior to the hospital visit– when Cuba was performing in the musical, “Chicago.” Cuba says he was elated to see his brotha, but only has one regret:

“He [Singleton] gave me a hug and kiss, and said ‘I didn’t know you could sing’,” [Cuba] remembered, laughing. “If I’d’ve known that was my last time I would’ve held on a little longer.” -via Too Fab

ILOSM family, the man whom Ice Cube portrayed in the classic 1991 film, “Boyz N The Hood,” passed away a few years ago. He was the childhood best friend of late director/writer, John Singleton — who painfully paying homage to his childhood homie in 2018…just one year prior to Singleton’s death.

Although Cube’s character, “Doughboy,” left a lasting impression on millions of fans, most people never knew it was really Michael “Fatbacc” Winters,’ life story.

After Fatbacc’s passing in 2018, Singleton posted a video of Fatbacc speaking about their friendship at a prior event for Singleton (scroll down for video). At that time, John Singleton captioned his video post with the following message:

“Y’all give some honor and love to my best friend Micheal Winters aka Fatbacc..107 Hoovers. We grew up on 101st and Vermont ..shared a lotta adventures …This man could run his mouth .. speak his honest opinion on anything …he gave no fucks from an early age …In Boyz n Hood the character Ice Cube plays Is based on this man The Original Dough Boy. We called him Fatbacc. He gave himself that name around 12 years old near 7th grade writing in notebooks ..H.C,G. FATBACC. You will forever be remembered. RIP.Love.”

Following Singleton’s tribute, Fat Bacc’s brother also paid homage to him online:

“My little brother 4 life 101st was way too real we had some real men come from that street from Vermont to Hoover st. I’m the one who introduced them to one another and its been all love ever since…. thanks for always being True friend and homie to us, your Boyz off the 101st. Big Tw7n”

Fatbacc, a Crip gang member, was loved by many around his way and was said to have a great personality. Singleton went on to study at USC film school, which is when he wrote the script for “Boyz N The Hood.” Even though their lives took separate paths, they’re genuine brotherhood remained in tact for the rest of their lives.

In a previous interview with Vice, Singleton revealed why he wrote the film about his life and friends, growing up in South Central, L.A.:

“I was living this film before I ever thought about making it. Growing up in my early teens, I batted around with three friends, Jimmy and Michael, and our other friend who was also named Michael; his nickname was Fatback – he was heavy-set – and in the movie we called him Doughboy. As I started to think about what I wanted to do with my life, and cinema became an option, it was just natural that this was probably gonna be my first film. In fact, when I applied to USC Film School they had a thing that asked you to write three ideas for films. And one of them was called Summer of ’84, which was about growing up in South Central LA.”

John Singleton was portrayed as the character, “Tree” — played by Cuba Gooding Jr. and Desi Arnez Hines II (young “Tre”), and Singleton’s father was portrayed by Laurence Fishburne:

“At 11 years old I went to live with my father. There are things that happened to me and my family, like the guy breaking in and my father getting the drop on him, and the black policeman, saying “You should have got him – that would have been one less nigger.” Then there’s other events in the picture that happened, but not necessarily to me.”

The day after John Singleton’s ex-girlfriend and mother of his son speaks out against the BET Awards’ recent tribute to John Singleton, his mother, Sheila Ward, is speaking out too…and they have two VERY different opinions.

Why Singleton’s Ex Bashed BET’s Tribute…
In case y’all hadn’t heard, one of the mothers of John’s children, model Tosha Lewis (also known as Tosha Riea), took to social media to bash the hell outta the tribute the late Boyz N’ The Hood director legend received on BET. During the BET Awards which aired on Sunday, June 23rd, two potent tributes were paid to two celebs we lost this year. One to late rapper, Nipsey Hussle, and the other to legendary director, John Singleton.

Here’s what Tosha had to say:

“So BET cab take the time to honor Nipsey Hussle and not John Singleton? They’re whole movie line up are John Singleton movies. His movies are in the BEY commercial. They never featured anything Nipsey, but I guess he’s trendy nevermind John was talking and doing the same stuff as Nipsey since the 90’s.”

Many fans agreed with the mother of Singleton’s son, Massai (25), but many others also felt that Nispey deserved an equal shine as well. There’s one person who totally disagrees with Tosha’s statement though- Mama Sheila…and she had a lot to say about it…

Fast forward to now, and TMZ reports that a few of the mothers of Singleton’s kids believe something very suspect may have occurred in the hours leading up to his arrival at the hospital…and for good reason:

Some of the mothers of his children are very suspicious of the events leading up to John checking himself into the hospital in mid-April. …We’re told nobody seems to know how Singleton got to the hospital — he didn’t drive himself, no friends or family are saying they took him, and there are no Uber or Lyft receipts to confirm how he arrived…

As the unfortunate drama over the late John Singleton’s estate continues, this latest development will probably make it ten times worse. As we previously reported, Singleton’s children have been beefin’ with his mother, Sheila Ward (pictured above in blue dress), over control of his finances and such. Now, Mama Sheila done marched to the courthouse with new legal claims that somebody is doing herself and her son’s possessions dirty.

According to The Blast, Sheila Ward filed new court docs, making several claims against an unnamed “third party” -presumably Singleton’s daughter, Cleopatra, whom she’s battling in court over his will.

Mom Claims Singleton’s “Personal Property Is At Risk” & Has Been “Breached”…

Sheila claims that someone has been ‘stealing’ things from her son’s home and giving them away, without her permission:

The Blast- In her filing, Ward claims that Singleton’s “personal property is at risk.” She says that Singleton secured his valuables in a locked office located in his home but claims that the locked office “was recently breached by a third party and items were removed and distributed without authorization to a beneficiary who believed that he was protecting the assets from other beneficiaries.”

Keep in mind that Sheila filed an emergency request to be named ‘special administrator’ of her son’s estate, when John was still in a coma, prior to his passing. Therefore, anything that happens to his finances or possessions must first come through Sheila for now. Thus her latest legal filing…but there’s more…
