Most of us Old Schoolers remember singer/producer, Jon B, very well. He was one of the only hit-making White R&B artists of that era; and he was also Babyface’s protege.’

Matter of fact, after many fans first heard his ’95 hit, “Someone To Love,” we thought, ‘Why did Babyface make himself sound like a duet, when it’s really just him on the record?’ Then came their music video and we realized Babyface actually wasn’t frontin’ after all, because it really was a duet…with a White dude who sounded just like him.

Nowadays the 48-year-old singer and musician wears several hats– he’s still doing his thing in the music game, he’s a devoted husband to his wife of 16 years, and a proud father to their two children.

Years ago he raised all kinds of ruckus – mostly good praises, with a few negative opinions mixed in – when he boldly professed his love of Black women…and their body parts (we’ll get to that in a minute though). Now, he’s big uppin’ his Black queen and biracial daughters for how they’ve helped him throughout the years.

Meet His Family & What He Shared About Them

In a  Vlad TV interview, Jon B was complimented on how he damn near hasn’t aged a day since the ’90s. However, the laid-back crooner refused to take the credit for that, and instead praised his wife, Danette, as well as their daughters, Azure and L’Wren,  for making him incredibly happy and helping him to remain stress-free:

“I think music has kept me young, and also having a beautiful family…someone to love, as my song says. Something beautiful to always reflect back to on a daily basis has kinds been a fountain of youth for me man.”

I don’t stress out too much, other than having to leave that security of home that I have.”

In a prior interview, Jon B. had this to say about his fam’:

“Family is everything. I wouldn’t trade my wife and my little six year old baby girl for anything (this interview was conducted before his second daughter was born). They are my biggest priority. Before the concert, I took my daughter to Central Park and we just hung out. I brought her along with me on the road. She’s starting to play the piano like daddy and hopefully she can take over so I can retire (laughing). I’m just blessed to have my daughter and wife in my corner.” [SingersRoom]

What Jon B Previously Said About Which Type Of Black Women He Likes…

Those who know ’90s R&B, probably remember singer/producer, Jon B., very well. He was the only hit-making Caucasian R&B artist of that era and he was also Babyface’s protege.’ His slow jams, “Someone To Love” and “They Don’t Know” had the radio burning up back in the day, and his mid-tempo jam, “Don’t Talk” was also a banger.

Like we said, Jon B’s way of explaining his attraction for African American is quite interesting and here’s what he said when asked about it:

“It’s not that I prefer Black girls, but that’s who I find myself relating to as a human being. I am also attracted to really ghetto girls, straight out the hood…a thickey, a real ‘pass the hot sauce’ type girl.” -Jon B [Vibe Magazine, 1998]

Now under more normal circumstances, hearing a White guy describe his love for Black women as a “pass the hot sauce thickey” chick, would sound a little offensive, but in Jon B.’s case it’s different, know why? Because he actually has two beautiful half-African-American daughters, whom he loves more than life itself, with his African-American wife, whom he’s been with for years. So our man, Jon B., wasn’t just talking smack, he actually was just being real, and his life proves it.

Jon B. Speaks About His Wife And Kids

Jon B. has been married to his wife Danette, since 2007. They have two young daughters: L’wren; and Azure.

When Jon B. was asked how he was able to manage fatherhood and the responsibilities of having a family while being in the public eye, Jon B. said this:

“My daughter knows that daddy sings for the people, so it’s understood that it’s an honor that we have as a family to have a daddy that goes out every weekend and sings for the people. It makes her feel proud. She’s like, wow my daddy sings for the people, and she doesn’t even know who the people are! It’s cool.” [via SoulTrain]

In 2013 Jon B. was asked how important his family is to him in the midst of still being in the music industry…

As for what Jon B. is up to now- he’s released several albums throughout the years and in the pre-COVID era, he was performing regularly to packed venues. He doesn’t like the lack of variety in today’s R&B and he really dislikes the business side of today’s music industry, which is why he says he enjoys the freedom of being an independent artist. Here are his thoughts on that:

“The industry changed so much throughout the years. I remember back in the days when fans used to stand for hours and hours to get your CD in stores. Now, with the internet, you’re lucky enough if fans heard one or two tracks from your album. The industry is hard and it can be a b!tch. That’s why it’s so important for fans to continue to support independent artists. Labels don’t do what they’re supposed to do; they want to charge you for the money for them for messing up your career.

Labels don’t have personal interest in what’s going on, or not necessarily artistic interests. Their interest is, you know, it’s a business, dollars and cents. It’s units out, units in. They don’t have an emotional commitment and connection to it. And if they do have a commitment to it, let’s say, they don’t exactly execute the promotion of the album properly, or they can’t get a hit from an album. At the end of the day, it’s a write off, it’s a tax off for them, so they don’t lose anything in signing an artist like myself. I put it out all on the line to sign to a label. I’m like here’s my song, here’s my year off; instead of being with my little girl, I’m hopping on the road and you’re telling me where you want me to go. It’s like they control you, but instead of being a slave for 18 years man, I said you know what, I’m gonna go a head and emancipate myself.” [SingersRoom, 2013]

It’s always good to see artists from back in the day still doing what they love and earning a living off of it. Major props to Jon B. for staying in his lane and staying true to his R&B roots. He has his Queen by his side every step of the way and their daughters – True love, his family, and the career of his dreams- it doesn’t get much better than that.

ILOSM family, here’s a newsflash: There is such a thing as in beef amongst ‘blue-eyed soul’ singers. That is what’s just been confirmed by 90s singer, Jon B., in a brutally honest confession he’s made in recent years. Turns out, his fellow Caucasian R&B competitor, Robin Thicke, tapped a nerve for Jon B, when he later came onto the scene and ‘stole’ his shine, so to speak. To this day, Jon B. is still dealing with the affects that had on his career and seemingly has yet to move past it.

Jon B On What He Felt When Mentor Babyface Signed Robin Thicke…

As most of us Old Schoolers know, legendary producer/singer, Babyface, signed Jon B. back in the day and they pumped out several hits, such as “Someone To Love.” Well, in a new interview with Vlad TV, Jon B admitted that when Babyface and music legend, Andre Harrell, inked a deal with Robin Thicke years later, he became hella salty over it:

“To not have that same energy with my career and watch it happen for someone else was definitely a challenge for me,” said Jon B. “It was humbling to watch another guy come into the scene and everyone’s asking, ‘What do you think about Robin Thicke?’ in every interview I ever did.”

Jon B. Felt “Threatened” By Robin Thicke…

Soon, the public started comparing Jon B to Robin Thicke and that was a nightmare for Jon B:

“From the very beginning I felt threatened because that was sort of my neck of the woods, the Babyface thing, and I felt kind of like, okay this guy kind of came in and stole some of my wind,” Jon B said. “It really was apparent for me early on and I let it kind of get to me a little bit, and I think I kind of fed into it a bit. That was a challenge and I definitely had to adjust to the whole scene of it not being a new thing to be a white guy in R&B, that there were other guys that were in this thing, too, that were doing this thing. You were going to have to deal with being compared to them and vice versa.”

It wasn’t until recently that Jon actually met Robin, when they did a show together in Baton Rouge, LA. That’s when Jon took a moment to get a few things off his chest to the “Blurred Lines” singer:

“‘I’ve had to talk about you for many many years,’” Jon B told Robin. “He said, ‘That’s got to suck,’ and I said, ‘Absolutely, it kind of does.’ Nevertheless, I did it and I’ve tried to be as respectful as possible because I think people want to pose [us] almost like fighters against each other.”

The good thing is that Robin seemed understanding of where Jon was coming from and now, the two may end up working together in the future, if Jon B. has it his way:

“I would love to do a song together and leave it at that and that would be a dope collaboration.”

Friendly Reminder To Jon B. AND Robin Thicke:

We have nothing but love for Jon B. and Robin Thicke…but hopefully they’ll remember to ‘put some respeck’ on the names of the other Caucasian soulful singers who did it before them. They can start with singers like Michael McDonald, Bobby Caldwell, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Michael Bolton, and The Average White Band, to name a few…just sayin.’

Nevertheless,  much respect to Jon B. for being brutally honest about something that had to sting like hell at that time.

Make some noise if you remember Jon B. When you think about 90’s R&B, it’s hard not to remember the cat who bursted onto the music scene and confused the hell outta everybody.

The Caucasian Brotha

After many of us first heard the ’95 hit, “Someone To Love,” we were probably wondering, ‘Why did Babyface make himself sound like a duet, when it’s really just him on the record?’ Then came the music video and we realized Babyface actually wasn’t frontin’ after all, because it really was a duet…with a Caucasian brotha who sounded just like him.

In the beginning of his career, many were trying to determine if Jon B. was just a wannabe artist doing the whole cultural appropriation thing, like Justin Timberlake and so many other White artists get accused of. Jon B. was a White man singing Black music, who always featured Black women as his love interests in his music videos. Turns out, Jon B’s got news for his naysayers though- if there’s one thing he is, it’s real. That is evident not only by the fact that he’s stayed true to the R&B music that truly inspired him since he was a youngin,’ but also by his wife of 13 years and their kids.

Meet Jon B.’s Wife

One reason is that his wife is African American and Jon B is a White cat from Rhode Island and Pasedena , CA. Another is that the stark contrast Jon B and his wife represent in comparison to many of his African American celebrity counterparts. It’s no secret that most of us are not surprised whenever we see a Black male celeb’ with a wife of another race…in fact, we damn near expect it. However, in 2020, it is still a shock when we see a White male celebrity with a chocolate woman. Love is love, regardless of race, but that does not make it any less surprising when a White dude shakes up the stereotypical norm.

At any rate, the love Danette and Jon B. have for each other is a beautiful thing and they are also proud of their two daughters, L’Wren  and Azure.

Jon B.’s Grandmother Is 108!!!

Another reason why Jon B. shocked many fans, had nothing to do with race at all, but everything to do with that fountain of youth his 108 year old grandmother has found. On her recent birthday, on August 5th, Jon B. showed love to his grandmother with a photo of her holding her birthday cake. He captioned it with the following message:

“Happy 108th Birthday Grandma Your Life Has Been Truly Remarkable With Family and Faith Always Coming First Will Always Remain In Awe Of Your Beautiful Spirit We Love You Beyond Words”

Jon B. On Working With Michael Jackson

One thing many didn’t know about Jon B is that he’s written and/or produced songs for many R&B and hip hop artists, including TLC, Luther Vandross, Coko of SWV, Jay Z, Nas, Guru, Tupac, and one of his most memorable, Michael Jackson.

In an interview with The Shadow League, he revealed how he was granted the opportunity to work with MJ:

JB: “We were managed by the same manager, which was orchestrated by Babyface. He wanted me to have a very high powered manager. I met Mike backstage. I told him he was a huge influence. I got the call a couple of weeks later to remix the song, “You Are Not Alone,” and that was a huge single at the time. The president of Sony called me to do it and that was a huge honor for me.”
