In 2014, Steve Harvey revealed — on his radio show — that the legendary Lenny Williams and his wife approached him at a public event…with Lenny telling him, “Man thank you SO much for saving my life…you really saved my life.” Then Lenny’s wife said, “We thank you so much.”

Steve confessed that at that time he had no idea why Mr. and Mrs. Williams were thanking him. However, Lenny then explained to Steve that after the comedian consistently played his 1975 hit, “Cause I Love You,” during his iconic “Kings Of Comedy Tour” routine, the sales for that song shot through the roof. Because Lenny owns the rights to his song, those sales are what pulled him and his wife out of a bad financial position, according to Steve’s recollection of what Lenny explained to him. Lenny said he also started getting booked for shows a lot more.

Steve Harvey later stated on his radio show, that it wasn’t him, but rather “the grace of God” … because he had no clue Lenny Williams was going through financial troubles at that time. Harvey also expressed that Lenny’s story really touched him, and that Lenny probably has no idea how much he, in turn, affected his life too.

Wow, Lenny did what many artists from back in the day haven’t been able to do – retained the ownership of his own music…and decades later, it paid off for him.

George Clinton, “The Funk Pioneer” has worked with artists from all genres and insists that allowing his music to be sampled has been instrumental in keeping his career alive. “We forged ourselves an alliance with the [Dr.] Dre’s and Snoop [Dogg] and [Ice Cube] and all of them,” said Clinton but unfortunately, he is STILL in court fighting for the rights to all of his music that he lost the rights to in his bankruptcy a few years back.

Sam & Dave (The “Soul Man” and “If Something Is Wrong With My Baby” singers) practically had their entire life’s story jacked and recreated in the movie, “Soul Men” (starring Bernie Mack and Samuel Jackson), but have yet to be compensated for it and that’s why Sam Moore has been battling it out with the Weinstein Co. (the film studio responsible for creating the movie, Soul Men) for the past 6 years and things like this definitely make Weinstein co. look suspicious because according to variety.com this is what went down:

Disgraced film producer, Harvey Weinstein, made some effort to involve Sam Moore in the project. On Jan. 15, 2008, he emailed his brother Bob, the head of Dimension Pictures, which produced the film, writing: “You have to have Sam participate in this movie.”

According to Moore’s wife, Weinstein Co. representatives eventually call with a last-minute offer for a cameo role for Moore, but it came with strings attached. “A day or two before they shot a car-crash scene in Memphis, they offered Sam a cameo role for $1,000, but they said that we had to get down there immediately” – the couple lives in Arizona –“and they also wanted Sam to sign a complete and full release of any and all claims and rights that he had to the movie,” Joyce explains, adding: “Needless to say, we never even went to look for a suitcase.”

For those who aren’t familiar with the band, they had several hits in the early to mid 70’s, including “So Very Hard To Go” and Lenny Williams (the singer best known for his soul classic “‘Cause I Love You”) was their lead singer for a long while. They also collaborated with many other legendary music artists, such as Brother’s Johnson, Rufus, Larry Graham’s Graham Central Station, Elton John and many more.

Via TMZ: Two members from Tower of Power suffered an “unfortunate accident” after they were hit by a passenger train in Oakland, CA … fortunately both survived. Drummer David Garibaldi — a band member since 1970 — and bass player Marc van Wageningen — a substitute bassist — were reportedly crossing the tracks Thursday night at Jack London Square and on their way to a gig in the band’s hometown.

Tower’s publicist said the musicians are “responsive” and being treated at a local hospital.
The band’s 2 shows scheduled at Yoshi’s jazz club were canceled.

We were over here at ILOSM, discussing what we thought were the top 5 most begging songs of R&B and while it was extremely hard to narrow down this list, we finally settled on these 5.

Keith Sweat- Right And A Wrong Way
You know we’ve got to kick it off with this Keith Sweat slow jam. This brotha sounds like he was begging with his life in this song. From the moment he started singing his opening line, ‘You may be young, but you’re ready’….’Ready to learn’ it was ON! And I aways thought it was cool how he ended the song with a passage from The Stylistics “You’re a big girl now, no more daddy’s little girl.”

Babyface- Never Keeping Secrets
He claims to never keep any secrets from his baby and never tell a lie. “I want to make it up to you.” That’s his strongest line from the song. We love it because although a lot of women probably think most men can’t keep that promise, the fellas still love to sing it to their ladies anyway. Women love it gives a sense of emotional security and deep attachment to their men. As some guys have said in barbershops across the country, this song ‘puts a lot of pressure on men when women sing it in their presence.’ LOL.

We found this very rare video of Lenny Williams’ “Cause I Love You” slow jam and we just had to post this one. Why? Because most of us have never seen this, and besides that, most of us actually thought our man Lenny, had committed suicide, or passed away from some tragic event soon after this song was recorded. How that rumor swelled into a massive supposed “truth” among us soul fans, is beyond me. On a side note, we’re happy that Lenny’s still here with us doing his thing.

Lenny deserves much respect for this type of artistry because this is one of those songs that will always have a long-lasting effect on the listener, and hearing this just now reminds me of why we miss that true baby-making music from back in the day. Remember how you felt every time you heard this song? Lenny was pouring his heart out and we could really feel his pain, his yearning for his lady…I mean, the brotha took begging to a whole ‘notha level, and made it sound classy while he was doing it. This song made you feel like you needed to be in a relationship, if you weren’t in one.

“Cause I Love You” probably helped a lot of relationships back in the day. Why? Because all you had to do was spin this 45″ and it said everything you needed it to say.

It helped the fellas apologize to their woman in the most sincerest way possible.

It made the ladies know how truly special they were to their men.

With songs like “Cause I Love,” no words were needed, men could just hold their woman tight, gaze into the eyes of their lover and speak through song, letting them know “I got you, don’t worry.”
